Have we turned a corner? Post Man City

Reading the blue moon forum, they are all stating how poorly they played and those who bother to comment on us say how dreadful we are.

like others, I thought we did ok. Has their been a slow deterioration in our performances, week by week so that what looks like an improvement in our eyes is viewed as dreadful by others?

I rarely see an opposition forum where we are praised win, lose or draw. They did underperform but some of that was down to our setup and how we played. Rarely will opposition fans recognise this though. Remember, they're aiming to win the league and that sort of performance is going to be a lot worse than what they are used to. They're hardly going to praise us for playing well. It will always be their fault for playing badly because they are expected to easily beat us.

I think we've been very poor in recent weeks and today we were much better. Defensively good (1 error), worked hard, better in possession, but didn't really break Man City down. Granted we didn't test Hart, but other than Toures effort in the first half, I don't remember them testing Hamer much either. We've not been hammered once this season, we make 1 or 2 errors a game which cost us, and we don't take our chances. Great FK from Cambiasso just wide in the first half, Vardy maybe could have done better when he went through in the first half and a possible penalty on Vardy in the second half.

Couple of things that are frustrating - we are so poor from corners (I think we had 8 they had 2), we play back to our keep who just hoofs it long too often for me, another goal conceded from a cross.

I am not Pearsons biggest fan but actually think we should stick him. For me, there is no one to bring better we can bring in. Couple of big signings in January could turn us around. I would though, look to players that would stick around if we do go down. If we keep this young squad together, couple of good additions, we can be even better next season.

This for me is a big one... But I dont blame kasper or Hamer for that... our back 4 are completely 1 footed and wont even pass with their weak foot, lost count how many times the ball has been passed to wes, only for him to control it onto his left foot, then pause whilst he decides what to do, get tracked down and end up turning back to goal and passing to the keeper, the fact we have a VERY low back line means by the time its back to the keeper the opposition are already closing them down!

Our keeper never has any time on the ball, when the ball does come to the keeper, not one of our defenders move to make themselves available for a pass, by then the strikers are on him and there is only 1 option...

Prime example of teams playing it out from the back is united today, Just watched them, there was a point where ashley young was pushed into his own right hand corner, and as the ball came out into midfield, fellaini now in the centre about 20 yards out with the ball had 3 players on him.... I noticed David De Gea had moved completely out of his goal and to the right (in the middle between his post  and the corner flag) to give him the option to pass back... he did, De Gea controlled it, and passed it to valencia on the right wing and they were on the attack...

Ben Hamer moved out of  his goal last night in the same scenario, and gave wes morgan an option to pass back, he controlled the ball and had absolutely nobody making any sort of effort to get into a space.. so he was forced to launch it with the onrushing city players... Yep... we lost possession...

Our defence need to be braver and sit further forward (Once we actually get some quality in) and stop putting ourselves under needless pressure....

Got a chance of turning the corner with that system, but if we turn up with 442 again, we're as good as down

Need to claw back to 1pt per game average immediately. Team that is bottom at Christmas has been relegated 20 times out of 22 seasons

Funny that the forum were begging for the 442 a few weeks back

what was our formation?

4-5-1? I would have called it a 4-3-2-1 with the completely straight 3 in midfield they were very tight, Either way it worked well...

Our defenders are not good enough on the ball. This is something the opposition will have noted. If they did make angles and take possession off the keeper, they would be pressed very high. I have noticed very few teams allowing us to play at the back. They always press very early. I can only deduce that this is a tactic employed by teams we face having done their homework. Perhaps when upson is available we may see a change although our full backs also seem to get pressed early and seem very uncertain. Maybe 5 across the Middle will enable us to play out from the back more comfortably. It wasnt obvious yesterday though.

Dropping Ulloa is a massive step forward.

.

Seriously?

Dropping Ulloa and playing a headless chicken (at this level) who always gives 100% and allegedly (according to certain fans and media) always causes the opposition problems (again, let me emphasize 'allegedly') but never ever looks like scoring or creating a goal up front as the lone striker - you think that is a step forward?

Posted

Again we were not massively outclassed.  Given Ulloa being the source of our recent goals then I was amaze he didn't start - but hey, it's Nigel's career.  Still too many mistakes at the back.... I think we need to adopt a "safely first" approach to defending -- e.g. in the Liverpool game, wes could have knocked the ball pout for a corner - instead he went tot he trouble of nodding it back in tot h path of Lalana!.  When things aren't going well then we shouldn't try to be too cleaver.  Hammer gives me hope.

It was both and I liked the look of it. My lad saw the team before kick off and he assumed it was Vardy alone. Sometimes he was but good to see some pressure input from the wings and little surges from mid-field. I missed some of the football as I was watching some off the ball communications. Hamer, Cambiasso and Ulloa were all instructing younger players and those players did what they were advised. Shame about another loss though...........

My stomach was churning from 1pm yesterday -  I was fearing a horrible day, but it wasn't so bad. It's a right battle now, and I have to learn to like a relegation fight again.

0.18 points per game from the last 11 and one shot on target at home = an improvement? Nige did a great job getting us here but actually if he can't do something to arrest this slide soon what was the point exactly?

It's not about picking Vardy, it's about picking a smaller player.

For some reason our players seem completely incapable of resisting the urge to pump the ball forward to the big man. Yesterday's football was far more about passing the ball out, with the midfield 3 effectively linking the defence and forwards rather than just being by-passed because we have a striker who's good int he air.

If it turns out that our players are capable of resisting the long ball to Ulloa then perhaps he will prove to be a really effective forward in that system. It's not his fault at all and is certainly not an indictment on him.

We huffed and puffed and ran around a lot and created virtually nothing all game. They on the other hand strolled around like it was a practice match and didn't even have any recognised strikers on the pitch. They didn't play well but were still far better than us as you would expect.

but we didn't trouble hart col thats what Im saying.

For all the running the end product isn't testing anyone

Im not hammering anyone we just ain't got it

Agree, our back line are clueless and technically not good enough in possession, which means we can never build out from the back.

lol...clutchingat straws...we were mediocre...they didn't even get out of 2nd gear....we are just lying down like a dog

What's with this 'they didn't step it up' malarky. Why would a team that needs to save players after a tough champs game want to sit and have to work hard on a 1-0 lead? We filled the midfield which meant they had no time on the ball. This meant they couldn't play their usual game.

We played well which is why they Looked poor. Give our lads credit where it's due.

We were unlucky today, play like that again next week and I think we will have turned a corner. Nige May have finally found our strongest team.

As for hoof ball pulis, he can do one! What is wrong with some of you? You refuse to see positives and knee jerk for the sake of knee jerking.

Foxes never quit. Nigel has become a true Fox.

The biggest difference was that we had a man to pass to in midfield, the players were putting themselves in positions to receive the ball. Compare it to something like the Villa game where the only out was often a pump up field.

Positive all round. Result went wrong, but they are clinical and out of our league. Best performance since Man Utd game

Totally agree. I am someone who has had no real confidence in Pearson. It is obvious that we needed better quality brought in during the summer, for which I blamed Pearson. ( Recent news seems to signify something else ). Pearson has not known what to do tactically all season, but wait.....................................

For the first time since Man Utd we had a set up that suited the players we have at our disposal for Premier league matches. Just maybe, as long as Pearson can develop the confidence in the players for that style, we could be on the verge of brighter times ahead.

Especially if we can pick up two or three gems in early January.

Check my posting history, we have always needed to play three proper midfield players at this level because we haven't got enough quality to only play with two. It is so basically simple and obvious that we have to start that way in each game. I could just about forgive Pearson for taking 15 games to realise it, as long as he actually knows it now!

Sadly True.

I know it’s not worth dwelling on, but it’s incredibly frustrating that we chose to go with either the diabolical diamond or the naïve 442 for the home games against WBA, Sunderland and Burnley. That’s 7 points dropped in 3 of our most ‘winnable’ games of the season.

Those 7 points may end up costing us at the end of the season.

I wouldn’t say that we have turned a corner just yet. However, the fact that we’re finally lining up as a Premiership side is cause for optimism.

It’s fairly pitiful of Pearson to finally see the light with games against Man City, West Ham and Spurs on the horizon.

But hey ho, we are where we are. A result at West Ham could really kick-start our season.

Spot on. Absolutely right!

A fine answer to back up your constant argument towards belittling every single decision the team or backroom staff make, with clear concise reasoning behind your debate.

Well done Raj, I'll make sure I don't even bother to read your posts anymore when I see your name.. As most will follow suit I expect. Clueless stereotypical football fan.

Well done Raj, Well done.  :appl:

I don't know why your mocking him for admitting he's not a FA qualified football coach. He knows what he is, unlike yourself and few on here who think they know how to fix our problems because their a bit handy on football manager, unfortunately you're sadly mistaken.
