Currently considering Vienna and Bratislava (easy way to do two new countries in the same trip).

Which would be the better base? Is there much difference in terms of price, and would Budapest be doable in the same trip too.

There's not a great deal to Bratislava. Day or two at best imo.

Budapest is quite close, could stretch to all three depending on the length of your trip I guess.

I would say base yourself in Vienna and day trip to Bratislava for the day, we did it the other way round and we got a bit bored in Bratislava, it was pretty cheap though, but not much to do.

Cheers guys. Bratislava is around a 50 minute rail journey from Vienna, not sure how doable Budapest would be in a day.

You can do Danube cruises which take in all three, but they look expensive.

Arrived in Cavtat just outside of Dubrovnik this morning. Room wasn't ready so we dumped our luggage and went to the seafront and I can't say I've ever been anywhere like it. Water is crystal clear, people are fantastic, weather is lovely and hot with nearly clear blue skies (some rumblings of thunder). We had a drink on the seafront in what can best be described as an up market bar, paid roughly £2.50 for a bottle of domestic beer, carried on down the promenade and I've just had a pint for the same price. Light lunch for the the two of us worked out at just under a tenner, portions were huge, food quality was fantastic. Booked onto a sea kayaking trip for Friday evening at £20 each and booked to take the boat to Dubrovnik tomorrow morning. Got so carried away by how picturesque it was we realised we should probably go check in. Overall first impressions are very good, those involved in tourism and the locals are great, just want to help to make everything as easy as possible, removes a lot of the unnecessary stress you usually get when arriving on holiday. Beer isn't as cheap as I thought it might be, however local shop prices are supposed to be cheap so may favour that over bar and restaurant drinks.

right, need to start planning our next weekend/long weekend away in europe.

we've done;

brussels, warsaw, budapest, amsterdam, berlin, split, zagreb, bratislava, prague and went skiing in bulgaria. preferably somewhere we can get to on ryanair/easyjet in a couple of hours for about 60 quid, somewhere either interesting or that has fit women and serves cheap beer. or a mix of all three.

suggestions so far are romania, latvia or bosnia. anyone wanna suggest somewhere else or comment on them? will we die in any of them places just for being english and pretty and touching the ladies? and preferably no suggetions for places like paris, rome or barcelona. somewhere a bit more off the beaten track so to speak.

My mate swears Tallin has the best looking women in the world. In his words, "even the minging ones are fit".

If you're looking for a good bar in Dubrovnik old town, try Buza (aka the hole in the wall bar). It's on the seaward side of the wall. Not well signposted but a great venue and fantastic views. Locals should be able to direct you as it's not somewhere found in the tourist guides.

Cheapest place we found in the old town for booze was the Exit Rock Cafe, which is in an alley off the main street, towards the port end of town.

Echo what you say about the locals, never met a bad egg there. Never felt hassled to buy anything and they genuinely seem honoured you choose to visit their area.

How long have you lived away from home Bovril? You lived in Sicily as well right?

How long you planning to go, did Vienna,Budapest and Bratislava in a week couple of years back

If you do a week definitely do all three imo. Three days in one, two in the others. Probably the perfect amount of time to spend in places like that.

Any less would possibly leave you feeling like you rushed it a bit, more than 3 or 4 days per place might have you twiddling your thumbs a bit during the day unless you've got enough money to pay for some gimmicky stuff like tours and shows.

For me touching 50 I like the museums and history and found Vienna has plenty to do but the most expensive, Vienna is very pleasing on the eye and would do the Schonbrunn palace but allow a day if you want to take in the gardens and tour on the tourist train around the grounds and Zoo.Also if you like a bit of Mozart or Strauss the evening concerts are worthwhile. Bratislava for a capital city is smallish and probably has less to do, I am not a drinker but they seem to do a good line in lagers, Bratislava Castle is pretty good as is Devin Castle which you can do by bus. The UFO observation tower also gives a good view of the city. We went to Budapest from Vienna in a hydrofoil in about 7 hours but did not find it worthwhile, very hot and not that much to see apart from a couple of big locks, we visited in August and it was a lot hotter than we expected, think the region had a heatwave and was high 30's so the trip down the Danube was a long slog. Only really got round Buda castle so spent little time in Pest other than going to the train station. Stayed on Buda hill in the castle district and Fishermans bastion is well worth checking out with stunning views of the bridges and Parliament at night. Vienna to Budapest is very easy  by train in about 2hrs 40mins and Bratislava is between them. google seat61 and that is really useful about train travel in Europe. Also found if you need a taxi in Bratislava or Budapest get your hotel to sort them out for you to save getting ripped off.

Great shout on Buza, had a lovely drink their after walking round the old town. Took a trip into the new part of Dubrovnik, not a great deal going on, slightly disappointed by their lack of official football merchandise in the area. I asked a local where the best place to buy an official Croatia shirt was or even one of a local football team, he told me that football isn't so big around here, water polo is the main sport and told me where I could buy shirts for their local team, not sure it's quite the obscure sports wear I was looking for.

Apart from the cable car, there isn't a lot going on in the centre. A bus ride or walk out to Lapad (Where we were based) and it gets lively again with decent restaurants/bars. The bar at Hotel More (half in a cave, half on decking looking out to sea) there is a must.

You're right regarding football, though there's a fair bit of Torcida and Hajduk Split graffiti going on. Even stumbled across a Croatian fourth division (I think?) game while she was having a nap the day we got there. The standard was wank but the stadium had a great view of the mountains. lol

Just booked 4  days in Huby N Yorkshire.in August. Would have liked it earlier as it is the 2nd week of the football season. Could be a TV game though. Booked the New Inn motel. Only £160 ata discount so not too bad. Just need to do the train. Best seems to be to York which is about 10 miles away. Does anyone know if buses run from the station or how far the bus station is from the train station? If I go via Chesterfield it is only one change.

Just checked and according to the bus time table a bus goes  from the station  then Huby via York centre. They are every hour so not bad. £34 to York £35 to Weeton. The pub Mended Drum is only a couple of minutes away. Had a message to say the other Hotel is 1 1/2 miles away but the roads are dodgyand a taxi costs 6-£8

Anyone been to Berlin in January? Noticed it's a decent time to go price wise but is that because it's far too cold and there's nothing to do?

I went for my 18th birthday one winter and I couldn't take any photos as my (analogue) camera froze.

Edited to say it was one of the best weekends of my life!
