Here is Saudi Arabia's most admired women list

.

I see what you did there, very good.

The fact that George W. Bush even makes this list denounces any credibility this poll hopes to attain.

Celine Dion was Nigeria's most admired woman

I love the thinking that must go into some voting.

"You know I really admire how Stephen Hawking has lived with his disability whist producing some of the most groundbreaking research over the past few decades, but that nothing compared to the way Jason Statham played the crazy goalkeeper in Mean Machine."

Obviously you don't get it because you haven't seen his seminal works in Crank and Crank 2: High Voltage.  No nerd can ever top that achievement.

This is total bollocks.. I am nowhere to be found ..

You were 22nd, just after Dangerous tiger.

Haha I suppose that's correct!

Says it all really, antithetical to best system of government we have and backwards. Very, very backwards.

Oh and side note, why does it have to come from history? Because back then you get away with claiming your family had the divine right to rule. In the present day we're far too upright and civilised to even consider such a claim, if it were made now, as being legitimate.

It's not really antithetical here though is it? I'd say we are pretty much a shining example of what a constitutional monarchy should be. We get the good bits without the nonsense they have to deal with in places like Saudi Arabia or Thailand.

An elected Prime Minister with a majority in Britain is far more powerful than any monarch could ever be.

Many traditions from history remain that may seem out of date, it's not a bad thing though. The world is full of countries whose new generations think they know best and the changes they implement can often be disastrous.

Yeah you're right, having looked up the exact definition it isn't quite the right word. I didn't mean to say that democracy can't operate in the presence of a monarchy, that obviously isn't the case, but it does run counter to democracy for reasons which have already been pointed out.

I don't see there being any instability in the event of the sudden removal of the monarchy either. The PM and his cabinet aren't constrained by the Queen, they're constrained by public pressure.

Not that I expect a revolution anyway. The monarchy has been very successful in appeasing the country by giving up powers over time. I think it will die out eventually but it'll be a long process of whittling it away until one day we have an heir with a particularly weak claim and we decide not to bother anymore. Less fun in that I don't get to storm Buckingham Palace all Bastille style but it'll have to do.

Cracking arse though

And her sister.

I see the monarchy in much the same way as I see religion or homophobia or racism.

Yes, I don't think much of the monarchy either. Certainly far from a Royalist me.

Never heard of at least 6 of them in the mens list. Is that bad?

And George W. Bush is in that list? How on God's green Earth?!

We shouldn't be so smug.

Most of the women on the UK list are actresses/celebrity types.

There must be women doing more worthwhile stuff who could be admired - politicians, journalists, campaigners etc, rather than actresses.

As others have said, that's what you get when you ask the people.

Edit. Actually, I take that back, I was looking at the world list. The UK one is refreshingly light on celebs.

The next YouGov poll results are going to show what % of people from each country don't know what the word "admire" means.

Can anyone offer a non race related viewpoint or reason for the long legged mack daddy being number two in this list?
