steveherbe Posted 3 February 2015 Posted 3 February 2015 Any of the over 50's on here given it ago? I've been doing it since last November, and its bloody brilliant. Try it chaps, contact your local FA, they should be able to put you in touch with a local group. I'm lucky down here in sunny Hampshire, we have the highest number of groups in the country. I pay £3 for 90 minutes on a Sunday afternoon. Its all about skill, quick passing, instant control, and vision - all the things that the City midfield dont have! Try it, you'll love it. And no smartarse answers from the kids please, you'll be old one day.

What are the rules, pitch sizes, indoor/outdoor, number of players etc.
ealingfox Posted 3 February 2015 Posted 3 February 2015 I thought it was a brilliant idea when I saw the TV advert about it - but (somewhat guiltily I admit) all I could think about is how to avoid the inevitable temptation to start sprinting to the ball and hammer it top bins? The thought of two people walking towards the ball neck-and-neck (obviously in slow motion in the mind) as it rolls out of play was just too much.
steveherbe Posted 3 February 2015 Author Posted 3 February 2015 Can be a bit frustrating Ealingfox, when somebody plays you a through ball to 'run' onto, and you cant catch the bloody thing! But 5 or 6 passes played to feet and pinged about, resulting in a shot on goal brings its own rewards. Its not real footy by any stretch, but for a 63 year old like me, its as good as it gets. Off the ball movement is crucial, and the old 'Ronaldo, look one way and pass it the other' gets 'em every time. If you're of the required age, give it a go. You'll never know unless you try it.
steveherbe Posted 3 February 2015 Author Posted 3 February 2015 Rules are same as normal, except no running (obviously), no slide tackles, no offside. Its 5 a side - or maybe 6, tournament rules seem to favour 2 touch only - takes a bit of getting used to - played on 3G 5 a side pitches. We tend to play multi touches unless we're in training for a tournament. We've got our first one coming up next month. And yes, by the end of the session I'm usually knackered. Maybe cos I play up front in the Vardy role, chasing defenders down. Gotta say though, my first touch and finishing put Vardy to shame, ask Sol thewall Bamba, he'll confirm that! We play outdoors, but there are indoor groups as well

ScouseFox Posted 3 February 2015 Posted 3 February 2015 sounds cool i like football and i don't like running
steveherbe Posted 3 February 2015 Author Posted 3 February 2015 What if you're 23 but your athletic abilities are that of the required age? Just consider yourself in training, 27 years to hone those skills!
Steve_Guppy_Left_Foot Posted 4 February 2015 Posted 4 February 2015 I've done my fair share of walking football on Sunday afternoons, and I'm a fair way off 50.
ozleicester Posted 4 February 2015 Posted 4 February 2015 My team mates say ive been doing it for years.
walkerleeds Posted 4 February 2015 Posted 4 February 2015 My team mates say ive been doing it for years. Likewise
daventry_fox Posted 4 February 2015 Posted 4 February 2015 I think its a good idea. theirs not really a lot of sports an over 50 can really get involved with, Apart from golf and fishing
notnow john Posted 4 February 2015 Posted 4 February 2015 I've seen it on tv in a Barclays Bank advert, seemed to be some chaps definitely running. Does the ref decide if someone breaks into a trot?
broughtonblue Posted 4 February 2015 Posted 4 February 2015 Do you actually walk normally or is it that silly walk the road walkers do where you can actually get up some speed?
steveherbe Posted 4 February 2015 Author Posted 4 February 2015 Ref decides, and your teammates take the piss! Basically you are not allowed both feet off the ground at the same time, that is classed as running. Walk as fast as you can/want
Voll Blau Posted 4 February 2015 Posted 4 February 2015 Just makes me think of the match they play in Father Ted. I'm quite a quick walker so reckon I'd be decent.
fuchsntf Posted 4 February 2015 Posted 4 February 2015 Leicesters 1st team have been practicing since september last year.!!!
RUDZY Posted 4 February 2015 Posted 4 February 2015 I wouldn't mind trying this but would be tempted to go for a run...
Nalis Posted 4 February 2015 Posted 4 February 2015 We tried to play once but the other team didn't show up. We won by a walkover.
steveherbe Posted 4 February 2015 Author Posted 4 February 2015 Played last sunday and won - was a stroll in the park.
steveherbe Posted 22 February 2015 Author Posted 22 February 2015 Just had our first competitive matches. Team we played won their last game 7 - 0, so we expected a hard time. Game one, 2 1 to us, steveherbe 1 goal, game 2 was a one all draw, got the goal again, game 3 was a goalless draw. Hacked down with rain all afternoon, soaked and cold, but we did very well. Tournament in 2 weeks time at Eastleigh FC, get your money on us to win it - I wish!
Royston. Posted 22 February 2015 Posted 22 February 2015 i take it the goalies are the only players allowed to run?
steveherbe Posted 22 February 2015 Author Posted 22 February 2015 i take it the goalies are the only players allowed to run? Nope, no running. No players in the goal D, and keepers cant leave area. My knees, calf, groin are killing me.

steveherbe Posted 7 March 2015 Author Posted 7 March 2015 My team missed out on getting an entry to the Eastleigh FC walking football tournament, gutted. But just had a call, a team has dropped out and we are in!! Tomorrow, all day, will be knackered, 21 teams entered, time for a beer to get into training. In case anyone is interested, I'll post an update tomorrow evening, assuming I'm not on a life support machine by then.
