If only we had Upson fit start of the season we would of played three at the back(as Upson is left footed and none of our other CBs are) and looked a hell of a lot more solid this season.  I think this is where our bad luck stared this season

Didn't think he was particularly good at Arsenal and looked a bit off the pace.

Saying that, it was his first game of the season...

I was thinking this.  Was Upson not being fit the reason why we have tinkered with formations so much and played only two central midfielders?

Why would we play three though? Playing three at the back traditionally suggests a 352 which failed at the start of last season. I understand we played 541 at Arsenal on Tuesday but I can't see us wanting to play that formation throughout the season. I thought we went with that because it was Arsenal/a tough away fixture?

If only we could:

Take our chances

Not make silly mistakes

Signed kramaric at the start of the season

Not messed around with a diamond

I take your point about Upson but there are a lot of 'what its' this season!

Given his history the injury was not a huge suprise, massive gamble signing a sick note for one of the key positions that needed strengthening at the start of the season

yeah upson or no upson we've still had 3 cbs (moore, morgan and was) to play if we needed, as well as the option of konchesky LCB for a left footed option and schlupp lwb. or the numerous months of the transfer window being open.

i don't think it was a plan until nige realised our central midfield area has been poor all season and we were going to arsenal away on a hiding to nothing unless we defended well.

So many ifs, buts and maybes that we could debate for days to come on this forum. A season's worth of them. All I know is we can't afford for there to be anymore.

Just listened to sample bits of that....can't have too much of a good thing.

Shame old Kojak can't be there on Sunday - he could've sung "If" on the pitch at half-time. I'm sure both sets of fans would have related to that and appreciated it.

I'm particularly impressed that he mentioned New Street station as a plus point for Birmingham! Among my least favourite places on earth! I'm looking forward to Sunday (a rare away match for me), but not looking forward to being crammed into the dismal Hades that is New Street station with thousands of other fans, even if a lot of them are LCFC fans.

I can't give a source but I remember hearing somewhere that Pearson was intending to play 3-5-2 this season.

When we have played 3-5-2 in the past, which both Brian Little and Martin O'Neill did, we always had around 6 central defenders.

Having a proper left footed centre back in a back three is essential.

Man U and QPR have proven that earlier in the season.

I genuinely think that Pearson wanted to start the season with Moore/Was-Morgan-Upson.

RDL and Schlupp are made to be wingbacks.

Thats the point though last two seasons for Brighton he was hardly injured then he comes here and gets crocked in pre season

Im surprised NP hasnt tried Konchesky in a back three as the left side centre back

Turned out ok when we matched Utd's diamond, although their once in a blue moon collapse helped us out, a tad

Rooney dropping deep as he does did give Cambiasso the run around in the first 45 though, but Nugent's workrate at the tip gave Blind an impossible game

I'm not sure where Mahrez could fit into a 3-5-2 - and he's consistently been one of our most potent attacking threats (one of few, in fact).

Maybe he'd be able to adapt to play more centrally as a deep-lying attacker behind someone like Ulloa, but I doubt it. I suspect that he needs a bit more space in which to exercise his arts - hence a natural wide man.

I certainly couldn't see him playing wing-back as the defensive side of his game wouldn't be good enough. Schlupp and De Laet could certainly operate as wing backs - a definite option in the absence of Mahrez, particularly with Kramaric now to play behind Ulloa, but Riyad has more than earned a place on the team sheet.

I wouldn't mind seeing 5-4-1 again, though, provided the full-backs were supporting the midfield when we had possession and not sitting too deep. With a good understanding between 2 full-backs (Konch & Simpson/De Laet) and 2 wide men (Mahrez & Schlupp), 5-4-1 could work well, allowing the wide midfielders to play narrow at times to support the 2-man central midfield and to play wide at times for wing combination overlaps and to exploit Jeff's pace and Riyad's ability to ghost past opponents.

In the 5.3.2 / 3.5.2 system, as discussed above, I'd play Mahrez in behind Kramarić, as the front two.

(This is the only way I can fit all my favourite players on the pitch together!, but I genuinely think it would work)

If Wes had been sacked off at the start of the season and Nugent wasn't absolutely useless then who knows where we'd be.

There are other reasons why we have struggled, but these two are fundamental in our demise. A central defender who can't defend and a centre forward who can't score. Any team with these two as their core would be below us

Christ people creaming themselves over Upson now? Said at the start of the game that it was a risk starting both Upson and Huth cos both have had their injury nightmares this season I knew one or even both wouldn't last the full 90 minutes. As it transpired it was Upson who limped off on around the 54 minute mark.

He was slow people blamed Wes for their first goal but it could have been attributed to Konchesky or Upson.

But he was Brighton's player of the year last season? Don't care he was injured when we signed him and he aint gonna get any better.

What a waste of money lee morris mark two.

523 looks really effective, drops to a 5-5 almost when we defend and very good fluid and quick in attack, that should be us away and at home 451 with Hammond in for a cb as a CDM, like moving a cb 20 yards forwards
