Can anybody explain to me why anyone thinks he can do a job for England? He's an egomaniac, but more importantly he had been playing badly when he was dropped, and hasn't played well since. His average since being sacked is well under 30 in relatively easy domestic competitions; he's at the end of his career, and his skills are fading. Couldn't a friend tell him he's 5 years too late and show some respect for the players who are in possession, building form and have a future?

I watched him play for the Melbourne Stars in The Big Bash, he looked OK there and was one of the top run scorers in the competition.  No telling if that could translate into Test cricket but he still appears to have the skills that put him in the team in the first place.  If you're good enough then age shouldn't be a barrier.

If they dropped him on form then why tell him he would never play again, why all the media bullshit slagging him off?  He pissed someone off, they ditched him and have been crap since.  He should be playing.

He's an absolute a*** of the highest order. Saying that, if he's good enough then surely he should be there. It's a weird one, I personally don't miss him.

To be fair you could stick Beefy Botham into our batting line up and he wouldn't look out of place ability wise and he's pushing 60!

Glad to have opinions that differ from mine. In IPL and later England performances, it always looked to me like he was trying to regain his old majesty, and in doing so he got out stupidly, but I haven't watched the Big Bash, just based opinion on his average there which doesn't look brilliant.

To me, his occasional 80 in Tests before a crushingly stupid dismissal (the hallmark of his last 18 months with England) wasn't worth the jittery first 20 runs that put everyone on edge and usually cost his wicket. Plus he's apparently a complete arse. But glad it's, a real debate, not just Michael Vaughan causing all this media coverage...

Occasional 80? Isn't he one of our highest ever test run scorers and century makers?

On his day he could win tests on his own with a superb batting innings. A few too many rushes of blood to the head trying something extravagant which got him out but there's no doubting his talent.

Think he's still got something to offer but needs to realise he's not bigger than the team.

Total willy puller but still a n exciting player. I can't wait for the IPL.

I think you might be disappointed as it looks like he's binned his IPL contract to play a full season at Surrey.

Having watched a bit of the big bash and listening to his commentary he did come across better then people have you believe.

He's got the reputation of a **** in the dressing room, but to me it seems broad and Anderson are the worst for that.

It was important england played well after sacking him, but they haven't. Whilst we are shit and he's still around it will never go away.

He might be an arse, but still would not mind him playing for Leicestershire in the 20/20!

He is-in the top 4 for both I think, and a brilliant, thrilling, greedy run machine in his time. Just think that after about March 2013 he's been pretty pants. Obviously the whole team was dog during the last Ashes, but he kept getting in and then getting out stupidly. Anyway, this isn't a Pearson thread so I'll rein myself in from repeatedly stating my own opinion-good to hear a range of views...

But you can't just judge him from March 2013 onwards....

I would love to see him back in the side, couldn't care less what he is or isn't like as a person. If he's in the England side and scoring runs then i'll be delighted.

Can't see it ever happening again, though.

There is no way - well almost no way he'll ever play for England again.

Having said that recent form suggests that half the team should never play for England again.

He's becoming even better whilst he's out of the side. I'd be tempted to put him back for the next 10 Tests and tell him to prove how good he is and how much we supposedly need him, if all this hassle is actually worth it.

He needs to prove that in the county championship (and boost crowds) before he gets picked. But unless he scores several double centuries in county games and the England management team is changed he won't have even a small chance of being picked.

Seems a twat who has an inflated opinion of himself. If he was serious about getting back into the England side he would have scored a shed loads of runs at county cricket to make it impossible not to pick him. Instead he chose to play Mickey Mouse cricket chasing money for 18 months and had his mouthpiece Piers Morgan campaign all over twitter.

If he gets his head down this year and scores runs I will have no issue with him in the England side as a KP in form is difficult for most bowlers to stop. until that point he is rightly not in the England picture.

Only because his salary at his new team has been slashed. Pretty much every dressing room he's been in has ended in tears when his ego hasn't been fed.

Posted

He splits every dressing room he plays in.

The reason he was so offended by the Twitter parody account was because it contained more than a grain of truth (and was quite funny).

He has been known to refer to himself in the 3rd person in interviews.

He sent texts slagging off the England captain to his Saffer mates.

He released a damaging "tell all" book at a time designed to get maximum exposure (but it caused maximum damage).

For all his current campaign in the media to get back into the side, he's finished.

He's England's highest ever run scorer in all formats..

He has the highest ever average for England for anyone who has played over 100 tests.

And as for playing badly.. He was our leading run scorer in the last series he played in (in Oz)

And he's really not at the end of his career. He's 34.

Remind me how old Tendulkar was when he stopped playing, and Sangakarra, Jayawardene, Kallis. The list goes on..

At risk of sounding like Piers Morgan here but it's laughable how Whitaker & Cook got rid of the bloke with zero explanation.

He is by a million miles our most talented batsmen, and we should move heaven on earth to have him in the side. The fact he wants to play and we won't let him is ridiculous. How they can't manage someone's personality is just stupid.

Don't you think the fact he makes everyone else in his team worse should be taken into account?

If he scores runs in County cricket and the team are happy to take him back then yes.

At the minute though you can't select him as he's barely scored any runs for two years.

Batting isn't really our major problem either - we need a spinner and a couple of decent quicks.

I'd be amazed if he got back in.

Signing for a divsion 2 side is pretty much ensuring he'll get quick runs. Stuart Broad and James Taylor both moved from Leicestershire because the ECB told them they wouldn't be considered for selection in a Div.2 side so it'll interesting to see what happens.
