Monk Posted 8 April 2015 Posted 8 April 2015 One could see the morality parts of the Bible as merely a document of what is 'good' according to our Judeo-Christian heritage. The Bible didn't invent those morals, it merely put them down on paper. What is 'good' according to other faiths and texts can differ quite dramatically. I was just trying to subtly point out that there's a lot of horrific stuff that the bible endorses that people today just seem to disregard - cherry picking what morals they want to draw from the bible.

Im atheist but alot of people cant go through life without a sense of meaning or path laying out in front of them throughout life, so if religion cults or anything else gives a person this then fair play to them i say. You should count yourself lucky that you think the way you do as you will never need to get involved with religious things, but at same time it shouldn't give people the right to mock or look down at anyone else as you dont see life through there eyes but your own. I dont believe in god religion but can see alot of people would be lost without a sense of meaning or direction without it. Doesn't mean your right or there wrong or other way. i disagree - if people choose to follow a loony religion and stand in the street trying to get people to join they are asking at the very least for some sort of engagement - and at best some mild critique. I didn't mock them - I just think it's wierd how people get drawn into it.

I think he's ignoring me. I even buy him presents for his birthday every year, he never opens them though. I end up having to give the foot spa to the wife.

Well no, most of what we know as indian food was invented in glasgow - but if you want to go for proper indian food it came from the classic religions of india (Sikhism, Hinduism and Jainism).

And your personal prejudices are getting in the way again, dismissing the unbelievable variety of dishes in the entire Middle East and much of South Asia with 'tomato and lettuce sandwich'.

You're aware the lettuce and tomato sandwich was just a flippant joke about the no pork rules right? Even still, some foods do go back to religion: a lot of Indian food is influenced by Dharma from vedic texts.

Rincewind Posted 8 April 2015 Posted 8 April 2015 In a poem I posted on Poetry Soup (posted on a previous page) Faith I mentioned being told to pray and have faith if in an operating theatre and finished up saying the surgeon is the one to be trusted. I had a reply saying God controlled the surgeons hands. Does this mean that you can get anyone off the street to perform the op and then rely on God to guide his hands to a successful op. All those years training was a waste on the surgeon if all you have to do is pray to save your life.
