Christianity is right because...well its the main religion around me...so it must be true. Islam is right because...well its the main religion around me... People choose their religion based on where they live and what is culturally acceptable. And i'm sorry but 'God' is a complete arsehole. "WHAT? YOU CHOOSE NOT TO BELIEVE IN ME?...WELL IT LOOKS LIKE YOUR GOING TO HAVE TO LIVE AN ETERNITY OF TORTURE" Makes me sad to think most of the world haven't opened their eyes up yet.
MPH Posted 7 April 2015 Posted 7 April 2015 No, in fact I am arguing a very simple debate that people are taking on tangents. The debate I started was; Christians say that belief in God is a choice. The reason I am passionate about this debate is because it made me fall out with a few loved ones. One of my family members believes that when judgement day comes, God will resurrect the dead and if they are found in the book of life will go to heaven and if they are not they will burn in Hell for all of eternity. This view is share by a large amount of Christians (Not all of course I know the Catholic church to name one disagrees) The problem with this is because I haven't "Chosen" to believe, I am not in the book of life so my family member believes I will be off to Hell. I argue that I have not been given a choice because of all the things I have listed in this thread. The reason it is such a passionate debate for me is that I fell out with this family member because he worships someone that is going to condemn me to Hell according to him. I really don't mean to trivialize what you believe to a simple analogy but im at work and I have quite alot to do this week so my time is limited so i hope it doesnt offend you... Just imagine you are standing in a room and someone in standing behind you 3 ft away. You know they are there as plain as day you can hear them... you can turn round and see them. It might be your wife, your best friend or whoever you want it to be there. They turn to you and say " just fall back. i'll catch you" And they might be telling the truth. They WILL catch you, and they might be the strongest person in the world. But you still have to BELIEVE they will catch you and make the move. YOU have to take the initiative and decide wether you are going to trust them or not. You have to make the decision to believe that they will catch you no matter how much of a real trustworthy person they are..

She might be a complete wreck and say she did it because she was told you were doing the same... I know its splitting hairs a little but i have seen this exact scenerio before ( not me!)

It tends to be a small minority of believers who are not.Most faiths have charitable works that look after the vulnerable and those in need. In fact, without faiths 'being nice' many people would needlessly die painful, sad, lonely deaths. Unfortunately, corruption of faith has led to hundreds of millions of deaths and untold abuse 'in the name of religion'. That can't be denied. But it isn't about the faith itself. It is the corruption of faith and misuse of power that leads to such atrocities. Individuals need to take ownership of their actions, measure them against the teachings of their faith and societies norms, and try to be nice. I know I do.

That's not really true. If you look at different religions there often seems to be common themes. Heaven and hell, a supreme God, etc. It would therefore be foolish for any one religion to totally discredit another religion. In terms of Christianity, Jesus certainly existed and I believe He is the son of God. It's then important for me to share that information, but not condemn people for not believing, it certainly isn't easy to comprehend. As I've said on here, it is illogical to think that God sent His Son to die for us all, and then for the same God to not show grace to people who have been brought up believing in something different. Now, that doesn't mean we can all just do whatever and say sorry later. If we have heard about Christ, and live in a tolerant society, then it is incumbent upon us to seek to build a relationship with Him. I can't say how we will be judged, however while I do believe in God's grace, it is important to me to continue to strengthen my relationship with God.

My problem with your belief is that it's based on where you live. You believe Jesus is the son of God because you live in a Christian country. You'd believe Allah was the son of God if you were in the middle east. People believe in God because they fear death.

They all worship the same God, they just don't agree on what he wants from them. Rather sad when you think about how many people have died because of it.

Interestingly, it seems to me that the birth of Jesus is where the schism begins for the Abrahamic religions: Christians believe he is the son of God, Jews believe that the son of God will come Earth, but Jesus is not he, and Muslims believe there is no son of God, though revere Jesus as a Prophet. They all worship the same God, they just don't agree on what he wants from them. Rather sad when you think about how many people have died because of it. That's a pretty good summation of the Abrahamic religions. It is so sad when you think how much suffering has been engendered and how much has been lost purely because of a misinterpretation of either a single person or the words of a 'God' but written by men in the distant past.

We're probably in a multiverse as well... so lets just say an infinite number of stars, planets and galaxies. But no, I'm sure they are up there judging us on whether we are boffing our neighbours wives.
