Dan LCFC Posted 16 June 2015 Share Posted 16 June 2015 Without a doubt a myth. If we go down this season it's got absolutely nothing to do with the fact it's our second season up.
StanSP Posted 16 June 2015 Share Posted 16 June 2015 as much of a myth as the 'manager of the month' curse. neither exist. it's all in the head.
C-man Posted 16 June 2015 Share Posted 16 June 2015 Could it just be that the media create a clever alliterative cliche to describe an occasional trend among teams that struggle in their second season following promotion? It's a cliche. Not a myth. Not a fact. Just a catchphrase.
bmt Posted 16 June 2015 Share Posted 16 June 2015 Myth. I think it only appears to happen when teams massively overperform the first season, which we haven't done.
Captain... Posted 17 June 2015 Share Posted 17 June 2015 You could have done with a batter spell check... There are lots of daft myths and theories that if they get repeated enough people start to believe, whatever the reason we will most likely have some tough periods next season, but with the confidence carried over from last season, and the upheaval at clubs like West Ham, Newcastle, Watford will be detrimental to at least one of them, Villa are still a bit of a mess as are Sunderland, and the bubble will surely burst for one of Palace, Southampton, Stoke or Sunderland. In short if we get relegated next season it will be our own fault and not the result of SSS or anything else.
fuchsntf Posted 17 June 2015 Share Posted 17 June 2015 Avoid relegation 1st year, SSS will click in when we win the title.
Stadt Posted 17 June 2015 Share Posted 17 June 2015 Another reason is that clubs sometimes lose key players after performing well in the first season, so it's not a syndrome at all.
Corky Posted 17 June 2015 Share Posted 17 June 2015 Richard Keys (who I imagine invented this phrase) was worried about Swansea suffering this incurable syndrome and spoke in sombre tones about it all. Only they were in their third season.
Carl the Llama Posted 17 June 2015 Share Posted 17 June 2015 Inspired by the debate in the Vardy thread about Second Season Syndrome. http://igc1989.blogspot.co.uk/2015/06/second-season-syndrom-myth-or-mortal.html tl;dr - There's statistically more chance of us doing better this season than there is of us suffering from SSS. So of 36 teams that survived season 1, only 9 went down the next year. 25% is no 'syndrome', but it's still a high enough likelihood that we shouldn't get complacent (not that we will with the current management). shailen Posted 18 June 2015 Share Posted 18 June 2015 It's definitely a myth. But it's a good indicator that you still have to work hard to avoid the drop. It gets easier to stay up every season we stay in this division, but no team is ever immune from going down. Complacency can hit us at any moment
Wymsey Posted 18 June 2015 Share Posted 18 June 2015 SSS will only occur if you don't prepare effectively, like any other season. Just another term for the pundits etc.
