Nuclear weapons

What if isis got there hands on nuclear weapons? May sound a bit far-fetched but with the numbers growing and growing who knows what they will be capable of in the future?

Humanity unfortunately needs to be wiped out in 500 years or less. Killing planet earth.

Do you honestly believe that Planet Earth will effectively be dead in 500 years or less?

I don't believe IS could get their hands on nukes in the forseeable future. Chemical weapons on the other hand, especially in Syria, is a possibility.

I'm getting sicked to death of IS and sicked to death of the pathetic response from the world. I like David Cameron, but he is clueless when he goes on about dealing with Islamic-extremists. His government have no clue who's going out or who's coming into the country: "So ours must be a full-spectrum response - a response at home and abroad; in the immediate aftermath and far into the future" - what does that exactly mean?

Short answer is: they won't.

Long answer is: they won't because firstly merely procuring a nuclear weapon is not enough. You need the knowhow and the  trigger to detonate it, which is controlled by a security system named PAL (Permissive Action Link). It's not just like pulling the pin out of a grenade - most likely any nuke that they will have bought will either be a freefall bomb or an ICBM warhead sourced from the black market, which would require extensive retrofitting of the primary detonation trigger before it could be used as a standard explosive (both of them normally require set altitude and pressure triggers to achieve detonation, amongst other things). The manpower and technical capability to achieve such a thing, while not beyond a well-equipped and funded terrorist group, would be so prodigious that every nation state on the planet would get a whiff of what they were doing before they finished...and they would get flattened. Which leads me neatly into my second reason - nuclear weapon is the Holy Grail of terrorist groups everywhere. Such a prize would lead to an immense amount of chatter (accidental or deliberate), which would be noticed by counterterrorism groups practically instantly. And...thirdly, should such a catastrophe actually occur, it is easy to figure out exactly which nation state the device came from in the first place (through the composition of fissile materials left in the fallout). No nation wants to be known as the one who let their nukes get into the hands of terrorists, so they're not exactly likely to have it happen in the first place.

Happy Monday, everyone!

Your second sentence, however, is a little more prescient. The next hundred years is pretty critical for humanity...just not for the reason you specify.

No. 220 million years ago there was a mass extinction that wiped out 90-95% of all species. But life recovered from that - I have no doubt that it will recover from the next mass extinction event (involving or not involving humanity directly) that happens too.

I had always wondered what drives someone to crack open a can of special brew on a Monday morning, thanks for helping me find the answer.

Apparently North Korea have got nuclear weapons, and 'testing' them.

They're a threat, but like IS - they won't have the knowhow knowledge to use them effectively.

If there's a mass nuclear war then yes

ISIS are a shrinking violet, the Kurds in Syria have pushed them back to their de facto capital Raqqa and Iraq, Shi'ite Militias and local Kurds are knocking on their other stronghold in Mosul pretty loudly. I don't suspect they have much left as a state, most likely will vanish into a terrorist cell as the Taliban and Al-Qaeda effectively have.

And this is why you need to watch any connection between Isis and Iran. Iran being the nation that have gone on record as saying they are committed to the total annihilation of Israel and the destruction of America..

ISIS are largely Sunni, Iran are Shia. As much as they might hate the West or Israel, they hate each other more. Hell, Iran is probably bankrolling a fair few of the groups fighting ISIS.

Iran is probably the biggest enemy of ISIS. Why do you think Obama is being nice to them all of a sudden? This is the country that if it came to it, would probably finish ISIS off.

Humanity killing the planet? lol

To paraphrase George Carlin, go ask the people dislodged by the SE Asian tsunami or the Nepali earthquakes if they feel like a threat to the planet.

The planet is fine, the people are ****ed.

Exactly this.

As a species we've lived on this planet for the tiniest sliver of recordable life history, let alone geological history, let alone universal history. Earth was fine without us, and it will certainly be fine without us if we don't survive the next mass extinction event.

25 years ago Iran & Iraq were at war with each other.... Now they're best of friends.

It all depends on wich Muslim group is in charge of which country at any given time.... Things have switched around in Iqaq since the toppling of Saddam... but it could change.... and thats why things needs to be watched carefully

If humanity isn't killing the planet then why are so many animals endangered.

While countless others are thriving and the planet itself is perfectly fine and perfectly stable.

We're a risk to ourselves and we're a risk to some of our favourite apex predators and primates but our "threat" to the planet as an entity is practically non existent.

The vast majority of species that have ever lived on this planet are extinct and countless species go extinct daily, with or without our input.

Honestly don't think that is the case. Islam isn't a monolithic entity, despite what many seem to think. There's a lot of historical enmity there.

I do agree things need to be watched carefully, but not for that reason.

Ok slight exaggeration... but you see my point, i hope?

It's just that things can change quickly... and if the last 5 years has tought us anything, seemingly safe and secure government structutures, expecially in the middle east and Muslim countries, can be overthrown wrather swiftly.
