This whole "we should have been keeping tabs on managers" thing is hilarious. The owners have actually been criticised for supposedly doing exactly that in the past. Now they're being criticised because they supposedly aren't doing it. Make your minds up lads.

But that's no even what's hilarious. What's hilarious is the fact that there's about 180 clubs in Europe who might fancy themselves an attractive proposition for someone like Neil Lennon, for example. If all 180 clubs operate this supposedly sensible method of succession planning by contacting Lennon every month then that's six conversations Neil Lennon has to have every single day. How long, do you think, before managers just say "when you've got a job to offer, then call me, until then leave me alone"?

I'd say a matter of hours on day one.

That's not how looking at managers ahead of time works.  You don't keep phoning them up to say "thinking of youuu".  You draw up a list of potential, realistic replacements by doing your homework on them from afar, refreshing the list every month or so based on movements in the job market, latest results, etc., then use that list to work off when you need to start ringing around for someone to fill the vacancy at a future date.  It seems a pretty simple notion to me, I'm shocked that Southampton seem to be unique in the footballing world regarding this side of club policy.

Hiddink was offered a supervisor role ! I have never heard of it before . Which person came up with that title ?  Is he in charge of the menu and bar in the restaurant too ???? No one I know has heard of one before and a few has said " only LCFC could come up with that " . What is the next man in control going to be called ? Strange title , even sunday teams have a manager !! I googled it , " supervisor in football "  and nothing came up !!

not that uncommon really - Klopp very much manages that way as does err Billy Davies ahem

i.e - tactician / motivator / leader of leaders -/  oversees those that do the training moreso than lead training himself / strategic management etc.

Well that's because people assumed he was ready to step into the job.

It now looks like total imcompetence as they have sacked Pearson because they wanted Hiddink without actually bothering to find out if Hiddink wanted the job. It's like getting rid of your wife to run away with the girl next door before you've even asked her out for dinner.

No they have been criticised for sounding out managers, whilst having on employed in the past. No one could critisize them for having a ethos for the club and a shortlist of managers who fit it.

not 'tha bloody title ya numpty -  but that type of role.

call it what you want - a role that isn't rock face hands on, doesn't get involved in recruitment or negotiations etc -

i.e ''supervises' the management of the playing staff if you really want me to be careful with my terminology....... the role he was rumoured to have been offered was that of a ...... Head Coach then if you prefer.

And i'm quite happy to be referenced as a Plonker - I'll take it as a term of endearment in the same way as I have used Numpty with your good self  :)

Utter rubbish.

The idea that you think every last eventuality is looked into and countered for within the realms of a football season is quite frankly laughable.

I d hardly say manager leaving is a "last eventuality"

he was offered the position of " supervisor " , manager, coach etc can involve " babysitting " etc etc , but supervisor was the title offered , I didn't make that up its fact . . if im a numpty for being correct , im a numpty. a correct numpty I am . surely your contradiction does deserve the term " plonker " !!

There's no evidence that this hasn't been done though.

If rumours turn out to be anyway near true it would be comforting to think they have been following Preki closely in advance of all this.

I think the only thing laughable is how much you seem to miss the point.

I saw this much like when Gerrard Houlier was supervisor with Roy Evans at Liverpool.

Who said anything about contacting the manager all the time?

Who has criticised the owners for scouting other managers?

Do you understand the point people are actually making?... I'm guessing not.

Can I just point out that Pochettinno left Southampton on May 27th 2014, Koeman was appointed on June 16th 2014. That's 20 days( and there was a lot of speculation leading up to Pochettino's resignation as well), so far we've been looking for a manager for 8 days.

And... You seem to specialise in missing the point of late.

So what is the point?

It has been explained about two dozen times by different people, if you don't or won't understand it by now, me running you through it step by step is going to be a complete waste of my time.

All businesses have contingency plans. They won't have names but they'll have an idea of the sort of person they need / want.

We still have a coaching setup, tactical analysis team, fitness, sports science, etc all at the club. Nigel Pearson leaving does't blow us out the water and condem us to relegation immediately. We've lost a first team coach / Manager but we'll be ready come the start of the season.

I thought the point was;

a) Southampton have a list of potential replacements- No evidence that we don't either.

b) Having a list makes appointing a replacement quicker- Not so far.
