Aus Fox Posted 6 October 2015 Posted 6 October 2015 I'm tempted to agree. This side's attack is definitely better than O'Neill's, but the defence is definitely worse. Still, I think our pace would just be too much for that side's slow defence. It would be a close game though. This side wouldn't be Gillies' team though. If you go man for man who would you rather have in your side, I've tried to match up like for like within both squads. Kasper or Keller De Laet/Simpson or Kaamark Huth or Elliott Morgan or Taggart Benny or Walsh Schlupp or Impey Albrighton or Guppy Kante or Lennon Mahrez or Izzet Drinkwater or Parker James or Savage Vardy or Heskey Okazaki or Cottee Ulloa or Marshall Kramaric or Fenton Fuchs or Sinclair Inler or Oakes For me, we had a far better 11 under O'Neil but way more depth now.
Rich Fox Posted 6 October 2015 Posted 6 October 2015 But that's not the question. No doubt this team is fitter and quicker than the MON team, but football has moved on significantly in the last 15-20 years so direct comparisons are really a waste of Agree with this to be fair
Izzy Posted 6 October 2015 Posted 6 October 2015 For me, we had a far better 11 under O'Neil but way more depth now. Agree we've got a better depth of squad now - but we've got loads more money now so we should have really. It's amazing to think what MON achieved with a relatively small budget back then.
Izzy Posted 6 October 2015 Posted 6 October 2015 We haven't won shit yet So eloquently put as usual Dr
Dr The Singh Posted 6 October 2015 Posted 6 October 2015 So eloquently put as usual Dr Does that mean we can close thread???
Sampson Posted 6 October 2015 Posted 6 October 2015 This. His distribution was excellent last night. Comfortable with either foot too which you rarely see in a CB. Half of those players you listed in the MON team never played together though, some played 3 or 4 years apart so it's a very unfair comparison, especially as you're not allowing for Cambiasso. Comparing Kaamark to De Laet, then Savage to James is an unfair comparison.
Leeds Fox Posted 6 October 2015 Posted 6 October 2015 Imagine the Attack we have now, with a defence we had under MON! And just mix the midfield up as you wish. Izzet, Kante, Lennon, Mahrez, Guppy, Drinky, James Savage. What a team you could make out of that lot!

Comparing Kaamark to De Laet, then Savage to James is an unfair comparison. I was jut trying to think off players in the O'Neil era who played similar to those we have in the squad now. Some of them I agree are unfair comparisons, but I stand by my point that the 11 of the O'Neil era would be better than the 11 of this, even allowing for Cambiasso. Why is Savage to James an unfair comparison?
SpacedX Posted 7 October 2015 Posted 7 October 2015 It would have been fascinating to see how good the likes of Gibbo, George Best, Cliff Jones and suchlike would have been with today's preparation and the faster pace. I think they'd still have been brilliant. When you saw how they played on shitheap, sometimes swamp-like pitches in winter I can only imagine they'd have loved the snooker-table trueness of today's grounds. ...and not having to play with medicine balls
Guest Col city fan Posted 7 October 2015 Posted 7 October 2015 I don't think you can argue this is the best era until we win something. Simple. Martin's teams won the cup twice. The Wembley trips were amazing. Let's win something.
HesNotGudjonsonn2 Posted 7 October 2015 Posted 7 October 2015 Looking at that comparison list I just could not decide between Vardy and Heskey.
Guy Posted 9 October 2015 Posted 9 October 2015 Come on, three successive top ten finishes, two cup wins and some Europe action in late nineties against what 14th place finish last season? Way too premature. Yup, I would love this present Ranieri era to eventually surpass what was for me the best ever era at the club, that being the golden M.O'Neill late 90s one but as others have said, it's way too premature to even be having such a discussion now. That said, last season's finale under Pearson was fantastic - but in a different way to actually winning two league cups and achieving three or four consec. top 10 finishes! The jury is out until May......!
Great Boos Up Posted 29 November 2015 Posted 29 November 2015 Sorry, but I want to bring this back as now we have set a Premier League record, and are financially better than ever before, (selling or buying) the sports science technology is within the top few in the world, the structure of the backroom staff is still in place and we are perhaps being taken as genuine competitors for the league, with great passionate fans. The Ranieri era starts here! Anyone wanna quote the twenties: Chat shit get banged!

The Ranieri era starts here! Anyone wanna quote the twenties: Chat shit get banged! Yep, we're brilliant and we know we are. Let's just see where we end up at the end of the season before we get carried away. As some of us old uns have said before, when we've had four consecutive PL seasons in the top 10, won a couple of trophies and played in Europe, then we can start to compare eras. But the potential with this team is clear to see and no reason this can't end up as our best era. Just too early to say yet....
Thracian Posted 29 November 2015 Posted 29 November 2015 No. Not until we establish in the Prem and win a cup. Otherwise the MON era remains our best. Simples No. Not until we establish in the Prem and win a cup. Otherwise the MON era remains our best. Simples Haha, there's no signs of us winning a cup unless it's some kind of prize draw at one of the Stoke-on-Trent potteries. We don't even seem to try properly half the time. Instead of stirring the soul and being the stuff of dreams, too many Cup games are treated like an inconvenience, fit only for the stiffs to get a run out and promising kids to get a first team shirt as a souvenir. I'm surprised they even charge for tickets but we're not alone. We've just joined all the other sheep in turning so much of our Cup football into a half-hearted mockery of what it used to be, with the wool pulled firmly over the fans' eyes for all that the job's been so effectively done over time, that few of them seem to care.
Len Finsbury Posted 29 November 2015 Posted 29 November 2015 Here's a thought, under MON, we had 4 top ten finishes. What would trump that this season alone? Would we have to win the PL for it to be considered better than those 4 seasons or would a single 2nd, 3rd or 4th place do it?
Guest Col city fan Posted 29 November 2015 Posted 29 November 2015 I'm gonna say the same thing I said weeks ago. Believe me, riding high in the Prem is cool but you cannot beat the trips (and wins) to Wembley in cup finals. Until we win a cup I'm still going to think more fondly of Mon and his teams. Unless we win the Prem of course! Imagine that!

As a fellow old 'un, I know what you mean..... but fook it, lets enjoy the moment, we could be dead this time next year - hope not of course.
