Renart Posted 7 November 2015 Posted 7 November 2015 I know that there is a thread out there somewhere but I couldn't find it. Mods might want to merge this with that one? Savage has just said this: 'My Leicester team was better than this one'Leicester 2-1 Watford Robbie Savage Former Leicester and Wales midfielder on 606, BBC Radio 5 live PA "We had Guppy, Impey, Heskey, Lennon in my Leicester side. We finished seventh in the Premier League and won a trophy. "I think the Premier League was stronger in my day, and my Leicester team was slightly better than the current one. But let's see where these finish at the end of the season." What do you all think of that?
bovril Posted 7 November 2015 Posted 7 November 2015 He doesn't even know where we finished the thick cvnt. But... the trophy win is important. Maybe this team is more talented but the O'Neill team is still greater, just. If we keep this up though it won't be long before the current crop eclipses them.
Renart Posted 7 November 2015 Author Posted 7 November 2015 I have added a poll as I always like them.
foxes_rule1978 Posted 7 November 2015 Posted 7 November 2015 He got the finish wrong, but he is still right, we won two league cups with that team and had consecutive top 10 finishes. If this team can top that then great but still away to go
Al-aLondon-Foxile Posted 7 November 2015 Posted 7 November 2015 Difficult to compare. MONs team were nicknamed the grinders, scoring often from set players. This current group are more expressive, with CR we seem to have ability to change tactics, and I think we're better to watch. Whether we will finish as high or win trophies is difficult to forecast, whether this league is easier or harder I'm not sure, I think it might be more open now, teams are in general more attack minded so therefore easier to score against. There no real answer, just opinions.
Guest Posted 7 November 2015 Posted 7 November 2015 I'm not having that the Premier League was stronger in his day
Arriba Los Zorros Posted 7 November 2015 Posted 7 November 2015 standard of PL is higher now no matter what Savage says. This team have the potential to be greater, but I'm holding judgement to see if it is a flash in a pan
Frank to be Posted 7 November 2015 Posted 7 November 2015 The current team on current form is better but the old team was consistent over several seasons. Incidentally, when Savage talks about 'his' Leicester team, it was also his Leicester team that got relegated in last place.
ousefox Posted 7 November 2015 Posted 7 November 2015 This is the best Leicester team I have ever seen. Unfortunately I can't answer your question though as I never saw an O'Neill game
foxfanazer Posted 7 November 2015 Posted 7 November 2015 I think we're better now. More attractive style of football at the very least. Yes we won stuff with MON but I think we're capable of doing that now. Savage said a few weeks ago that at some points in his career he was world class. Let that sink in for a minute
FoxInBlue Posted 7 November 2015 Posted 7 November 2015 What the MON team/squad achieved was fantastic but I believe what we have now is much better. I adore Muzzy Izzet, Lennon etc and watching them was amazing but what we have now is something else. I don't think this squad should should be judged on whether they win the League Cup (as fantastic as it was then). Our aims, as a club, are much higher and we finally have a squad to achieve the next level. For me, this is down to the owners. What NP did was great but even if he was still in charge now I think we would look replace him because we would need some one to take us to the next level, a bit like Southampton did with NA. Sometimes in football you have to break some hearts for the greater good and that's what has happened with us. CR won't be the last but he is the start of something very special for LCFC and lets all enjoy it.
norwichfox Posted 7 November 2015 Posted 7 November 2015 Perhaps too early to judge,...or vote, ask again when we've got to Wembley in the FA Cup I'm certainly enjoying what's happening at the moment....I still keep pinching myself to make sure I'm not dreaming it. The '63 team twould get my vote, but it's not an option.
Izzy Posted 7 November 2015 Posted 7 November 2015 standard of PL is higher now no matter what Savage says. Not so sure myself. You could argue that the Man U, Arsenal, Spurs, Newcastle, Villa, Everton, Sunderland (and others) teams of that era were better than their current teams. I thought the '95 - '00 PL era was pretty good and for us to finish in the top 10 for 4 seasons running was a hell of an achievement.
suffolk fox Posted 7 November 2015 Posted 7 November 2015 Curren team is very very good. Unti, though they emulate or better three top ten premier league finishes, two league cup wins three appearances in the final losing one. Then O'Neals team was better. Different times though so you cannot really compare.

Maybe you have better individual athletes these days but the United and Arsenal teams of the late 90s are some of two of the greatest of all time, and there were a handful of other very strong teams around those days as Izzy mentions above. To finish top 10 four seasons in a row is remarkable in retrospect.
howlinmadmurfdoc Posted 7 November 2015 Posted 7 November 2015 This team would beat O'neills team, but when they've won trophies and consistently finished in the top half of the league then it's a serious conversation.
ZeljkoKalac1 Posted 7 November 2015 Posted 7 November 2015 Having thought about it i'd go with Robbie, that team maintained it for a number of seasons and won trophies.
Thracian Posted 7 November 2015 Posted 7 November 2015 Two managers making the most of their resources and what a fascinating battle it would be. The MON kamikazes were a frightening sight homing in on all crosses, corners and free-kicks like a bomber group hell-bent on taking out anything in their way. But they were organised too - and focused on all parts of the goal and any known weaknesses. Up to four hardcase attackers of 6 feet two or more all eager to feed on the pinpoint crosses of Steve Guppy and never too gentle in the way they went about it. But, Ranieri's no fool and would doubtless work tirelessly to cut the source of supply and very well he's managed that at times. On the plus side for today's team they seem fitter, collectively faster and more mobile and they'd need to be because they'd get nothing from crosses into the box. Who would win? Well, you could argue all day but it would be a cracking contest. I remember the 3-3 draw with a brilliant Arsenal side which somehow highlighted both the strengths and weaknesses of the MON team but in the most thrilling contest. I wouldn't be surprised by a similar result between the two Leicester teams because I don't think we'd be strong enough on the posts to keep out all the kamikazes all the time and I don't think the kamikazes would be quick enough to cope the sustained pace - and from so many quarters - of today's team. Such a beutifully crafted post that you had to say it twice You've got a lovely writing style @ Thracian. You should be a poet/author
Bayfox Posted 7 November 2015 Posted 7 November 2015 Love both sides. But when this sides wins and fa cup. End off. I die happy. It will happen right?
dpjfox Posted 7 November 2015 Posted 7 November 2015 neither team comes close to the bloomfield era imo
foxes_rule1978 Posted 7 November 2015 Posted 7 November 2015 neither team comes close to the bloomfield era imo This team is joint top of the league at the moment
Great Boos Up Posted 7 November 2015 Posted 7 November 2015 MON smiled and winked 3 weeks back, but probably just happy for me. I'll stick by MON. Never know what a managing is about until things tour sour. (not my words)
