Grewks Posted 6 December 2015 Posted 6 December 2015 All i hear is pundits saying we will fall away because a 'lack of strength in depth'. Unless i am mistaken, we had more international caps on our bench than any other side in the Prem this week-end, whilst man city, chelsea, arsenal etc were forced to use unknown youth players. Discrediting our club because of its size...acceptable, because of our lack of historical success.....acceptable, but discrediting our squad as 'lacking depth' when we have the best (currently fit at least) in the league, laughable and unacceptable.
BenTheFox Posted 6 December 2015 Posted 6 December 2015 We've already proven enough people wrong so far. We seem to be thriving off so called experts writing us off.
Corky Posted 6 December 2015 Posted 6 December 2015 The real test comes when we face Norwich, West Brom and Newcastle away where Liverpool, Spurs and Arsenal have all struggled in recent weeks. Win those and we can believe.
Fox92 Posted 6 December 2015 Posted 6 December 2015 Arsenal and Manchester City have a lot of injuries and their key players out and we don't seem to suffer as much in recent years. I know James has been out a long time now, and Kasper was out for a while too but nothing on our rivals (weird calling them that) at the minute. Yesterday we had plenty of International experience on the bench. I mean, Inler is an International captain! Impressive stuff.
st albans fox Posted 6 December 2015 Posted 6 December 2015 The real test comes when we face Norwich, West Brom and Newcastle away where Liverpool, Spurs and Arsenal have all struggled in recent weeks. Win those and we can believe. was thinking how to make exactly that point earlier today. dont lose against our nearest rivals at the top and its the results against the remainder of the league will determine how high we can finish.
davieG Posted 6 December 2015 Posted 6 December 2015 I don't think you can measure the quality of the bench by the number of caps on it. Benny and Inler have shown they still need more time to a climatise, schwarzer hasn't been that convincing, Kramaric is not even being considered and as much as I admire King him and James are no replacement for Kante. That said I'm sure we would be able to maintain a decent level of results if it was just one long term replacement even Vardy or Mahrez but I don't believe we have anyone who could adequately replace the infuence of Kante, we'd probably have to change the way we play.
rmahrez Posted 6 December 2015 Posted 6 December 2015 The real test comes when we face Norwich, West Brom and Newcastle away where Liverpool, Spurs and Arsenal have all struggled in recent weeks. Win those and we can believe. We've already beaten West Brom and Newcastle away mate..
katieakita Posted 6 December 2015 Posted 6 December 2015 http://www.myfootballfacts.com/PREMIER-LEAGUE-LADDERS-1992-2010.html Look at some of the clubs who have finished in the top 6 since the start of the EPL and there are plenty considered smaller than us, we have a fantastic infrastructure as good as anybody in the league and a scouting set up to match so why not dream.
BenTheFox Posted 6 December 2015 Posted 6 December 2015 We've already beaten West Brom and Newcastle away mate..
The Doctor Posted 6 December 2015 Posted 6 December 2015 We've already beaten West Brom and Newcastle away mate.. That would have been the point he was making...
Goddard Posted 6 December 2015 Posted 6 December 2015 Also we seem to have a happy bench. Constant Twitter posts from the lot of them showing the spirit on the squad. Then you see Chelsea with hazard and Costa throwing tantrums...
Goddard Posted 6 December 2015 Posted 6 December 2015 That would have been the point he was making... Not only did he bite, but he forgot that we also beat Norwich
kyleolly Posted 6 December 2015 Posted 6 December 2015 Pundits bang on about our strength in depth but in reality Man Utd, Man city, Arsenal and Chelsea are struggling especially in forward areas!

To be completely fair, those clubs have endured/are enduring ravaging injury spells that this club hasn't experienced this season yet. Attribute that to the sports science dept. all we want (or for the club in general for identifying resilient players), but that's also a ton of luck and at some point will regress to the mean this season. And then, we may be having the Dodoos and Chilwells and Hamzas on the bench. I definitely like the depth this club has when players like Benny and Inler can't make the side, but more like-for-like depth is always better. If someone like Albrighton goes down, have Schlupp, Dyer as competent cover, and that's great. But at other positions, the depth isn't there.
Jazzy_Jeff Posted 6 December 2015 Posted 6 December 2015 I think we've got great strength in depth in all positions. If the entire 11 who played on Saturday were unavailable we could still field; Schwarzer De laet Wasilewski Benalouane Chilwell Dyer King Inler Schlupp Okazaki Kramaric Not a bad side that.
fazzyfox Posted 6 December 2015 Posted 6 December 2015 It's lazy jounalism, we have someone like Wasilewski who was superb in the run in last season who often fails to even make the bench. With James set to return soon even picking the bench is a headache. To be fair though if we did not have the superb injury record we have and were missing 5,6,7 players per game we could be stretched were it not for the fact that we also benefit from having players who are capable of playing in multiple positions. Our players generally avoid injury, play consistently well and have a unity and team spirit, therefore making the squad any deeper would just mean more good players sat in the stands on a matchday whereas we can instead focus on making the top end of our squad as strong as possible. The lack of unwanted or not needed players means we receive a very healthy return on the salary bill where every player is at least putting pressure on those in the matchday 18 with no sense of having any journeymen simply running down their contract at the training ground. Simpson risked becoming one such player but his turnaround has been a pleasant surprise.

Don't think that side would make it to the top of the league though. Might have to settle for Europa league
