Everton away.. Next up.... Thoughts!

Hello there, time to dazzle you with my wit and wisdom!

Surely it will be Benny and King, who is the next cab off the rank in the midfield. I would love Inler to get some game time, because anyone who partners Kante is going to be made to look good, but it is the risky option, and it's hard to see Inler pressing like we do.

The other big issue, and the reason I started posting, is the horrendous lack of cover at full back. I've been a lurker, enjoying (almost) all of the banter, but I've been surprised that FT isn't in full on panic mode.

Is it just me, or are we totally dependent on the fitness of Fuchs and Simpson, to play 4 at the back? I know Benny can play at RB, but it's a bit tough on him to have to wait so long, and then play out of position.

AFAIK, Claudio doesn't do a back 3. I would do a topic on this, because it is could well be a problem over the Xmas fixtures, but I'm still a newbie.

They should at least call Chilwell back from loan, imho.

I thought that this would be our toughest test since we lost to Arsenal. It hasn't helped us by losing Drinkwater & Huth, 2 parts of the

backbone of the team.

I will be very happy with a scoring draw but maybe another 3 points for the lads? Could this be a chance for Inler to prove to Ranieri that he is a class player?

Claudio thinks Drinky may be fit according to the Mercury. But Huth's replacement will be more important though.

Last time we won in the league at Everton was 14 Dec 1985 we won 2-1 with Alan Smith and a Gary McAllister penalty

I can't believe thats 30 (THIRTY) years ago! Fvck my boots...

Don't understand why people are calling for a change in formation eg. 3 at the back or 3 in centre mid just becasue huth is out and drinky may be as well...

No, let's doing what's working as our best 3 players are still in, just simply get Benny or Was in for Huth (I would say Benny) and King or Inler in the Drinky (I would prob say King)

No need to panic and drastically change what has been working so well! come on the foxes!

Personally would go for Inler over King. Playing against Barry and Cleverley energy isn't going to be an issue and with Kante alongside him it's going to be reduced even more.

Inler is similar to Drinkwater in that he has an eye for a pass and has a better range of passing than Kingy, with Everton's fullbacks known for pushing high and wide those cross field passes and through balls in behind to space will be of much use on Saturday.

Various posters, in this thread and others, have commented on supposed skills that Inler has over King that have simply not been in evidence since he's been here.

Better range of passing? Does anyone seriously believe King can't deliver a long pass or an imaginative through ball which is spun to evade a covering defender? What nonsense. King simply sees the situation and delivers the pass that's quickest, most constructive and least risky.

I've seen about four long passes from Inler since he's been here. Two of them were easily intercepted and might well have ended up giving a goal away. All were unnecessary and unlikely to result in anything exciting given the positioning of covering defenders. They need to be delivered instantly and when opposing defenders have been pressing too far forward and can be caught on the counter.

Of course I accept that Inler could occasionally get lucky with a Hoddle-like delivery, just the same as he could get lucky with those occasional long range shots of his that people have lauded but which have actually gone high, wide and not very handsome when I've watched.

No, the important things to me are the time Inler needs on the ball to deliver his passes - far too long from what I've seen so far - and his reluctance to track runners, who will surely work off him rather than Kante, if they've done their homework.

King has improved in this aspect and his tackling is keener now than some give him credit for.

Furthermore King is a far more versatile goals threat and is still the best fast passer in the club, particular under pressure.

I don't necessarily think the Inler or King debate (if Drinkwater's too great a risk to justify) will necessarily be the most crucial though. Most important will be cutting the supply to Lukako and the efficient functioning of our chosen centre-backs in dealing with the passes that do get through to the big man.

The other thing will be getting the goals needed to win by attacking Everton's flanks and the connundrum of whether to use Kante, King and Shinji in central midfield to this end, rather than pairing Vardy with Ulloa and having just two in central midfield.

The loss of Ulloa's aerial presence might be crucial, back and front. Having beaten Chelsea with Ulloa it's tempting to stick with that and perhaps use Shinji's energy later.

But perhaps there's a stronger case for Shinji this time, and what amounts to a 4-4-1-1 approach, because it's so important to deny Everton momentum and this would allow us to press the ball relentlessly as we did against Spurs and counter quickly when we get it..

Unusually, I'd consider a draw to be a creditable return. But maintaining the ability to counter quickly should still give us chance of scoring the two goals at least that will surely be needed to win.

Including King might be key in allowing both he and/or Mahrez to provide a goals threat around Vardy against an Everton team which will be used to dealing with an aerial threat but might be more more vulnerable to the ball being played in low and on the ground.

Perhaps it's even a game where Dyer might make an impact off the bench at some stage or for Albrighton to finally come up with a decent finish because he does work his way into decent positions on occasions, only to lack the composure and focus necessary with his eventual shot.

I'm retaining perhaps blind faith and going for a 3-2 win with Mahrez, Kingy and Albrighton to score.

King or Inler in for DD

Ben or Was in for Huth

No drama either way.

They'll all be chomping at the bit to stake their claim.

In Don Claudio we trust.

Anyone care to guess at the bench?

Assuming benny and AK start, we have schwarzer, was, Inler, dyer, Okazaki. we need another defender/midfielder. Perhaps both. do we need two strikers?

Chilwell would be useful cover but he's two weeks away from a return. so who is the midfielder or defender? Can't believe we would have krama and shinji away from home.

Everton will be a fascinating contest and a real teaser for Ranieri's tactical mind given our injury problems. But I've every faith in the guy and in our players.

Cambiasso 'adapted' with 7 games left. Until then we were a relegation bound side.

That's the facts.

And to enable Cambiasso to 'adapt' we had to change our system. This worked and the great escape became a reality. Then, Cambiasso excelled..bit it did need the tinkering of the formation and the team to achieve this.

I think Inler will be similar. We can only go on what we've seen of him in this division and in the cup games. What we've seen is a player with glimpses of quality, but generally off the pace.

So.... IF we want to accommodate Inler, we need to get a formation which enables him to shine. Exactly like we did with Cambiasso last season.

The question is do we? Do we change our formation to accommodate the player OR stick with how we have been playing and go with King?

From what I've seen so far (which is all I can go on) I wouldn't fancy Inler in a flat 442. I think we'd get over-run. Like last season.

It will be interesting to see what Claudio does.

Finally I take issue with you over how we could be 'better' than we have been with Kante and Drinkwater. How? We are top of the league in what has been so far, an amazing season. That pair (in a 442) have been immense.

Edit...This isn't a post knocking Cambiasso. Every player benefitted last season from the formation change and especially with the introduction of Huth. The point I'm making is how Pearson finally got it right and enabled a number of players to 'adapt'. Schlupp being possibly the best example. As a left back he suffered. As a wing back he was absolutely superb in those last 7 games.

We get it. You don't rate Cambiassso.

Stop  bringing him into every post you make.

I like your posts mate but by Jesus stop the hate.

Just read this off the Everton Forum;

'I have the unfortunate privilege of being at Uni in Leicester. Absolute hole of a place and their accent is minging.'

Calm down la. Calm down.

I reckon if King and Benny start then the bench might be: Schwarzer, Was, Barmby, Inler, Dyer, Kram, Okazaki

Barmby's played left back for the 21s and on loan a fair amount and could play further forward if necessary. Given dodoo, Chilwell, Lawrence are out on loan. Unless they wanted another CM and went for Cain or McCourt.

I swear we must've gone on a streak of no away wins for about 15 years. It seems like every single ground is a case of "haven't won here since 1985"

Our recent away record is incredible really. I remember season after season in the 80's and 90's where we just couldn't buy an away win and were truly dreadful away from home. We really are rewriting the history books every week at the moment.

It's like when they wheel out the bullshit every year about it being the hottest summer in 80 years/wettest winter in 700 years blah blah no you're just saying that because no one can be arsed to check

However in the case of some established Premier League teams it may be true because we spent the last 70 years in the Championship and haven't played a few of them since the old World War Cup (70 years thereabouts, I rounded it up slightly)

It's funny though because we've won five away games this season, and I swear at all five we've had some dodgy record.

West Ham - Utterly dreadful record, surely up there with the worst in English football, 16 defeats from 18 before this season.

Norwich - No league win since 1995.

West Brom - We've actually won there three times in a row when I've been now, but I'm pretty sure I read someone at the time say it used to be another bogey ground for us.

Newcastle - If our record at West Ham was the worst of any club in English football away at another, this was likely second.

Swansea - Had never even scored at their current ground, let alone won.

Have we really not won at Everton since 1985 lol deary me.

This feeds in to my point in the thread about cover for full backs. We are a bit bare at the back.

I'm sure Claudio will have a plan, of course, and it would be great to see Was getting some game time, but I think that putting Chilwell out on a loan (if that is what has been done), without allowing for an immediate recall is a mistake.

I'm going to say it...this shows why this is the best Leicester team ever! We go into every game expecting to win, I never felt like that before.

As for Everton are average with a poor defence, We will score at will against them. They might get a consolation goal or they might not. I've felt we could give someone a real thrashing soon and it could be Everton because they can't defend for toffee. (get it?) lol
