Interestingly a few months back I downloaded pretty much their entire oeuvre using this logic, "hey they never get repetitive, unimaginative, or boring, right?"

Turns out for every Eleanor Rigby there are 5 dull copy and paste wishy washy love song jobs that you have to skip to avoid mind-numbing tedium.  Same thing goes for the Rolling Stones who are even worse at it.

I rarely listen to their early stuff because it's basic love songs and I'm not into that. But '66 onwards their stuff is second to none and very groundbreaking. There are examples of songs that Lennon didn't play on, for example, if they weren't good enough... 'Maxwells Silver Hammer' as an example.

If you've given them a listen and don't like them then fair play I'm not disagreeing with that. 'Overrated' is what I cannot agree with.

But I'll leave it there, I don't want it to take over the thread, and you've always been one of my favourite posters. But I'm just not going to respond am I. I love the Beatles man, think I might ask for a picture of them on my headstone.

I personally think my posts are massively under-rated.

I know it's the 'over-rated' thread but I'm going to be anarchistic and point out what needs pointing out.

hahahaha don't be stupid.

They changed the parameters of music and without them you wouldn't have bands of today (or even then).

I take it you or those +1 your post don't understand what music was like before the Beatles then?

You've been brainwashed mate. I know it's kind of trendy in a retro-bumming hipster sort of way to pretend otherwise, but aside from 1 or 2 half decent songs they were largely shite. As for being the forefathers of  modern music  lol  That's just a thing people say that has literally zero meaning, probably to give them a justification for saying they were good without having to reference any of their actual music.

Anyway, other overrated things imo include: sweet potato chips, Nandos, Pep Guardiola, nights out in the North East and the entire realm of 'social media'.

Your point was "I hate people who make out they changed music"... I gave you a list of 15 points (and I could have continued) which you haven't yet responded too.

As for "I hate it when people make out the Beatles changed everything".. Let me think, and off the top of my head, here goes:

1 The Beatles were the first British group to crack the States, opening the door to the 'British invasion'.

2 They hated 'Beatlemania' and their rise through touring made them the first band to ever play in a stadium. Soon after they ****ed off touring in and became a studio band - some of their top work including 'Tomorrow Never Knows' and 'Eleanor Rigby' was written and released during this time. They made it acceptable to be a studio band.

3 Released the first concept album with Sgt Peppers (bands such as the Kinks, the Small Faces, the Rolling Stones and the Beach Boys all did the same soon after).

4 And talking of Sgt Peppers, it was the first album ever to feature the songs lyrics. Nowadays, every album includes the song lyrics in a booklet.

5 They invented the Double A-side with 'Day Tripper/We Can Work It Out' (and months after other bands started rolling out double A-sides, particularly the Rolling Stones).

6 They were the first band to record guitar feedback with 'I Feel Fine' - Hendrix, the Who, the Jam, Oasis later did the same.

7 Lennon sang backwards on 'Rain' which was the first time it ever happened.

8 Harrison played guitar backwards during the 'Revolver' sessions - again, the first time it ever happened.

9 Harrison also played sitar on 'Norwegian Wood' which introduced Indian influence which the Byrds and the Rolling Stones later used.

10 'Ticket To Ride' was a milestone for music as it was so heavy critics called it a starting point of heavy metal.

11 Hey Jude at more than 7 minutes long became the longest single to top the charts. Imagine a World where 'Layla' or 'American Pie' didn't exist!

12 Lennon was so unhappy with the way the bass guitar sounded, an engineer had a new way of recording the instrument which was first used on 'Paperback Writer'.

13 'A Day In The Life' - which for some is the greatest song ever - was received as a "new type of song" - more complex than 'pop' and seen as unique.

14 The BBC asked them to write a song for the first satellite broadcast ever - thus 'All You Need Is Love' was performed live in '68 to 26 Countries worldwide.

1. I never said they weren't popular.

2. I never said they didn't stop gigging.

3. By concept, I take it you mean "drug-influenced" or "unfocussed"?

4. I can almost guarantee that is not the case.

5. I'm pretty sure the point of a double-A is just to try to generate more airtime, so this would be a good marketing influence (if this is the first double-A side), not musical.

6. If this is true (which I'm hesitant to believe), you can have this one

7. And no one has done it since.

8. And no one has done it since.

9. And no one has done it since.

10. Depending on where you come from, it was either the Kinks, Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath that "created" heavy metal. I have never heard an argument that the Beatles (and in particular this song) was the birth of heavy metal, and listening to it, you are clutching at straws. The Kinks are widely credited with being the forefathers of garage rock and therefore punk, and many metal guitarists credit the Kinks with being their earliest influence.

11. I can quite easily imagine a world without Layla or American Pie.

12. Did this new technique become the norm? If so, you can have this one.

13. That's your opinion.

14. That's nice.

Not really a compelling argument that the Beatles were all that influential. On new ideas, really, you've got backwards vocals, backwards guitars and sitars, none of which were of any importance.

That really is a stupid response.

Which bit wound you up? You've just listed a bunch of things you've read about the Beatles, not arguments to how the Beatles are the most influential things ever. I countered.

and im still waiting on him telling me what his favourite beetles are

When other people start posting shite like that what do you expect?

But like I said, I can accept you don't like them but saying they're overrated is incorrect.

Just a bit weird how much someone not liking something you like, gets to you. Relax, we're all pals here

They were influential points, some of which led to music being changed for ever.

You've put a load of shite that... example:

Me: Sgt Peppers was the first album ever to include lyrics.

You: I can almost guarantee that is not that case.

... I'm not going to argue with someone who posts shit like that. You cannot argue with facts or history.

I was all for stopping talking about the Beatles because it's taking over the thread and I always get blamed for it when actually its people like you who want to wind me up so much that I continue. This shouldn't happen but you've continued it with utter nonsense.

It's not that I don't like them, I still happily listen to a lot of their songs now that I've separated the wheat from the chaff in my music library.  I was just relaying my disappointment upon learning the reality of what most of their songs are like and how starkly it contrasts with the popular perception that they're the world's best band who wrote nothing but really good chart topping hits.

That is why despite enjoying a lot of their stuff I agree that they are overrated in the grand scheme of things.

Only because you all wind me up and it still works. I've been posting on here since 2007 so I should have learnt by now.

Why are you acting like that. My reply to you was a joke and now you're asking a pathetic question.

I've always been a fan of stags myself.   Always remember the day at secondary school when one appeared in the middle of the playground and all the hard-nut school bullies wet themselves with fear and vacated the asphalt. lol

The little fella didn't seem too angry as I relocated him over to some bark chippings.

The Beatles

I wouldn't agree with the Beatles being over-rated per se, but Paul McCartney in particular, yes.

Also:

James Corden (and any show/film he's in)

Steve Wright (Radio 2) smug git who thinks he's be Adrian Cronauer (Good Morning Vietnam DJ)

Gardening/growing your own veg

KFC

Peri Peri Chicken

Pulled pork (it's just ripped up pork ffs)

Narborough Road

Probably already said, Woy Hodgson/his tactics

I could go on...

"Shit like that" - I've argued that I believe someone will have included lyrics on a record before the Beatles, even if it is true, it's hardly something musically influential.

Elvis, Ramones, Black Sabbath, Sugarhill Gang, whatever dickhead made the first all-synth record - these are people who helped shaped/form genres which spawned sub-genres and so-on. Without these, rock, punk, metal, rap, electronic would be very different / possibly non-existent. There was pop before and after the Beatles - the Beatles popularised boy bands and spawned Mersey-beat copycats (which all died a quick death) and had a hand in indie, hardly any of which gained any sort of popularity outside the UK

.

I always thought Lennon was a bit over-rated, and Harrisons contribution a little under-rated.

Speaking of over-rated musicians.... Pete Doherty.
