Exactly the reason we ask the questions.

Some customers think "WTF??? You're wasting my time"

But if you come in wanting that Sportage and it doesn't fit the bill, I know what will tick the boxes.

There's a Qashqai, a Kadjar, a Tiguain, a CX-5...I know what you want, we've sat down and talked about it.

You still need a new car.

Some salesman would force you in to the Sportage.

That ain't right.

And this approach will have people coming back to you for years. It stands you in good stead if you do start your own business (good luck if you do). Its not always about getting one sale. If you do it well, you'll have a customer for life who wont barter you on price and will tell all their family and friends of your approach.

I don't drive mine very often at all, certainly not over the winter but I'd never get rid of it.

Just seeing it parked up in my garage makes me smile.

It's such an iconic car and I love the colour. Spare tire under the bonnet and engine in the boot if I remember correctly!

That's the same as my first car. A 1972 Limited Edition Beetle Marathon.

They were produced to celebrate the Beetle becoming the most sold car in the world.

The amount of water it let into the back was ridiculous! Especially as the battery was under the back seats.

Loved it though. Heating didn't work. Once drove home from town to Oadby with my head stuck out the window, Ace Ventura style as the windscreen wouldn't defrost lol

Yeah, I remember the heating never worked in my Mums :D

What an absolute work of art though. A proper classic

First car - 97' VW Polo. Whoever bought it new spent a fortune on extras. CD player, leather seats, alloys. 2.0 normally aspirated diesel. It was a lovely tractor.

Most missed car - 02' VW Bora 2.0 150. Deceptively quick, super economical and all my mates thought I was a grandad and I didn't care. Owned it for the best part of a decade and was hard to part with.

When I was a youth, my Mum had an orange Beetle just like this and I thought it was the nuts. I told her that when I passed my test I'd buy it off her and have it as my first car and she agreed.

Then for some reason when I was about six months shy of my 17th birthday, she sold it to her mate Lynda. I was gutted but told Lynda to look after it for a while and I'd buy it back off her for a bit more than she paid so she'd make a small profit and I'd have the car I wanted.

Then about 2 months later, Lynda wrapped it around a tree and wrote it off the silly cow.

That made me howl way more than it probably should have !!!!

So....

Im looking at getting a new whip. Currently have a 2017 VW Golf Mk 7.5 GTI. It has 40k on the clock.

I ideally need to reduce the monthly costs, after moving house, but I can’t bring myself to get a lifeless A to B...

Ive got two options;

Polo GTI plus, 19 plate ex-dem with 4K on the clock. Extras include a rear cam sat nav etc.

next

2018 Golf Mk 7.5 GTI with 16k on the clock which I don’t think is bad at all.....

I’m not overly fussed about the new golf, after test driving it the old one is better in my opinion...

with £35 a month difference in price I’m leaning towards the golf as I’d be getting more for my money.......

I've mentioned this before, I had a Polo GTI as a demo car for a while and I absolutely loved it.

It was unbelievably quick and so much fun to drive, I nearly bought one.

The one you're looking at has a very good spec. Extras like that are pretty rare on the Polo.

Without wanting to sound derogatory, it's still a Polo though.

I'd personally go for the Golf. If you're buying, not leasing, you'll see less depreciation on that.

Golf's have always been incredible at holding their value.

Do you need 4 doors or a slightly bigger car?

Obviously I don't know your specific circumstances but you can get fun and practical cars for like 5-8k, I'm thinking Fiesta ST or Megane 250, but they won't be 2 or 3 years old, more like 5 or 6.

The Mrs has a T-roc so I can get away with having something smaller. But my only concern with the polo is, is it a long term car, I know the golf will last years if I want it too, will the polo start to fall apart after a few years?

Ive never been a fan of the ST range, not sure why.... never really considered a Megane. I think the age of the golf and the price is one of those too good to let go situations....

The fiesta St is a fun drive to be fair though still a lot being pinched so to save being paranoid and saving some fuel money for the mrs new car we decided to get the 1.0 ecoboost which is no slouch to be fair..

The Talbot Samba brings back memories of the old lady who lived on my street who drove round the village in one and never left first gear once...you clearly knew who was coming before you could see her haha

Decided on the Mk7.5 Golf GTI in the end, it was an absolute steal in the end 18 plate, 15K on the clock which is insane, must have been a nuns Sunday car. I must admit buying a car in covid is odd.... I don't know if anyone else has done it, but they forgot to charge me admin fee's and a reservation fee. They are also taking the old motor in without even looking, they have just accepted the value no questions asked. Let's just hope the Mrs doesn't destroy my alloys this time.......

Looking forward to it though, I plan to keep this car for a long time, given the fact the Government want us all driving olive oil powered cars in the future I think I'll keep this one. I've got a feeling that the Mk 7.5 golf will end up becoming a relic, just like it's older brothers the Mk1 and 2... I just think it looks so much nicer than the new one, the new Golf looks happy, at least the 7.5 looks a bit mean.

That last comment made me laugh, that is like my nan, she has a V reg Yaris and I don't think it have ever seen any higher that second gear..... Re the ST, have you thought of looking at a Focus STD? Or do they do a fiesta STD? I had a Golf GTD for a few years and it was awesome, economical and still possessed enough power to have fun in, I must admit though my GTI when driven sensibly wasn't bad I could get 48mpg.

I've got a 2018 Golf GTI. The best car I've ever had, an absolute dream to drive. I'd recommend it.

I'm getting a new one this year but don't know what I want yet. Wouldn't rule out another GTI.

Who did you buy it from?

The valuation for the p/x will be fine, they're all done on online valuation. The only way they'll knock you down is if you lie about anything. Little chips, scratches and kerbed alloys don't make a difference. Don't let any dealer tell you otherwise. They're all classed as smart repairs and cost minimal amount to rectify in bodyshop if they're going to retail it.

I once heard a story that a dealer tried to pay a grand less for a trade in as the tyres were worn lol

VW parkway in Derby. Mrs got a car from then and I was impressed with how good they were... so far they’ve been good with me too.

Yea the PX should be fine, few scratches and small dents here and there but nothing to cause an issue I’d imagine .....

I had a Talbot samba as my first car back in 1988!!!

It was truly the biggest pile of sh1t yiu could have ever had. I spent many a time parked up cleaning out my carburetor with a wire or driving with the choke fully on else it would stall!!@

I have nightmares about it 30 years on!!!
