Fourteen Years Ago Today...

So this morning, Facebook reminded me of a status I posted four years ago:

"TEN YEARS AGO TODAY

I stood proudly with 20,000 of my fellow Leicester City supporters as we lost 1-0 to Man Utd, condemning us to relegation, each one of us singing "Stand up if you love Leicester". Every single member of the crowd (even the Carling Stand - except the Man U fans spread about) were on their feet for the last fifteen minutes of the game. Every. Single. Person. We knew we were never gonna beat United. We knew we would be going down. We knew there would be tougher and uncertain times ahead - but we also knew that we loved our club through thick and thin. I’d never been more proud to be a Leicester City fan than in that moment; it defined my love for Leicester City and it will stay with me forever.

Leicester Till I Die.

God I miss Filbert St."

I posted that when we were still languishing in 12th in the Championship.

None of us could ever have dreamt that a few short years later, we’d be where we are now.

For me, this is what sets us apart from fans of clubs like Arsenal, Man Utd, Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool etc. They’ve never had a moment like that. Sure, perpetual disappointments, Cup Final defeats, etc.

But never a moment like that. A moment of resignation to such inevitable uncertainty. They will never understand what this means to us. It’s perhaps the most beautiful memory I associate with supporting this club, and it happens to be one of our worst moments.

Enduring the lows to get to the highs are what make supporting this football club worth it.

I wouldn’t have it any other way..

Arsenal, Man Utd, maybe spurs.  Chelsea and Man City fans well remember being in the lower leagues.  My mate who is ex Chelsea STH of many years is taking this season on the chin, recalling the bad old days well!

Not if they were born in the last 25 years they probably won't...

Which is why I excluded Man City

To be fair I am 25 and I can remember when Chelsea and man city were rubbish. I can remember man city being in league 1 too and us playing them in the cup when they were a league below us.

I suppose the other clubs i.e. United Liverpool arsenal etc wouldn't have seen anything other than top 6 finishes etc.

But in the flip side. Seeing us come up from the pits to now is what makes this club special. We do it the Leicester way, it's that Leicester way that means that I am totally in love with this club and always will be!

Older boys will remember one of our worst days and possibly the start of our demise in that era...I'll just state his name(pardon the spelling!!!)

When did this happen?

Loved that moment. I was there when Walshie scored in the 94 playoff final, and again 2 years later when Claridge scored. And again when he scored a year later in the league cup final replay. The 3-3 with Arsenal. Steve Howards goal against Leeds which pretty much guaranteed promotion from league 1. So many happy memories, but this moment is right up there with them. The sadness and disappointment of the occasion completely over shadowed by a feeling of togetherness and pride being a leicester fan.

I've had this argument many many times with utd fans, or similar. They will never feel the same way as we feel right now. Of course when I was having these discussions I never, not for one moment, believed we would ever be in this position. The best I had to go with was a league cup win. But until you've experienced the lows then the highs will not feel as sweet.

Of course times, and football with it, change. But for my generation as an example, man u fans have come to expect success. A league win is just a league win, just add it to the others.

A league win for us would most likely be a once in a life time experience

Completely agree! It was a moment I will never forget!

After that day it got sung a few more times that season but it never matched the feeling of that day. It was completely spontaneous and the whole ground stood and sung as one. Brings chills to my spine just remembering that game.

We received so much praise for our backing that day, real defiance in the face of an appalling season.

I thought it was in 2001/2 season. We played them and lost in the fa cup I believe. They were in division one that season and came straight back up as champions.

We got knocked out of the cups to West Brom and Leeds that season.

Oh ok. Maybe I dreamt it. My bad. I had friends who supported them and I remember finally being able to say we were better than them. Maybe I just wanted us to play them when they were a league below us.

I remember this

I was quite young, but it was the spontaneous nature of it that was amazing. I didnt really understand what was going on at the time, of course it makes sense now, and i would have to say it was one of the proudest, yet haunting moments ive ever seen.

I'll always remember that - genuinely spine tingling.

Just the thought of 32,000 people standing and singing Stand Up for the Champions in a repeat of the scenes that day if we're set to secure it against Everton gives me goosebumps.

If my memories any good, hadn't we just beaten liverpool about 3 nil the week or so before? Wycombe got liverpool at villa park in the semis I think.

i remember knowing dickov would miss that penalty because it took so long before he went up to take it cos of david cunty james' antics.

Man City knocked us out of the FA Cup in the 2003/04 season after a replay so you could be thinking of that, but we were both in the prem and they finished above us :dunno:
