Sharpe's Fox Posted 29 May 2016 Posted 29 May 2016 Got absolutely schooled (no pun intended) by children. Embarrassing.
Raw Dykes Posted 29 May 2016 Posted 29 May 2016 Slightly off topic, but did anyone catch this story a couple of months ago? https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/mar/22/novak-djokovic-apologises-tennis-women-men-pay I don't know what the viewing figures are, but if men's tennis gets more viewers, then why shouldn't they get more money? That's how a free market works, surely?
Raw Dykes Posted 29 May 2016 Posted 29 May 2016 Here's another one from a few years ago: http://www.thelocal.se/20130116/45646 Swedish national team beaten 3-0 by 10 boys.
leicsmac Posted 29 May 2016 Posted 29 May 2016 If pure level of ability dictated pay in the entertainment arena Justin Bieber would still be getting dogs abuse at some back alley Canadian bar (if only!). The revenue they bring in is the important thing. I totally agree that ability should be better rewarded in the entertainment arena more (sport and otherwise, but at least sport has it marginally better than other forms of entertainment in terms of rewarding ability), but it doesn't work that way. Often it simply comes down to which tosser has the better marketing. If ability in such areas guaranteed better pay, then a couple of my buddies would have bestselling novels (as they're shit hot writers) and Fifty Shades would have bombed. If people want to watch the ladies and they bring it as much dough as the boys then pay them the same. If they don't (which they don't for the most part), don't. Talent level doesn't come into it.
Finnegan Posted 29 May 2016 Posted 29 May 2016 Equal pay is only a good argument if it's equal in terms of income/output. Men's footballers earn what they do because they bring in billions in sponsorship, television revenue, ticket sales and merchandise. I agree that women should be paid equal to men in terms of % revenue or by number of viewers, that's just basic human decency. But if by equal pay you mean having exactly the same wages, regardless of the fact you actually make less as a business, then that's obviously ludicrous. I feel the same way about tennis. They should work out the prize money based on the number of people that tune in to watch. If that means Djokovic would win more than Murray but Murray would win more than Serena? So be it. It's fair for everyone.
davieG Posted 29 May 2016 Posted 29 May 2016 USA women's team could miss Olympics over pay dispute By Paul VinnellLast Updated: 27/05/16 4:55pm Becky Sauerbrunn, Hope Solo and Carli Lloyd are threatening strike action The USA women's football team - the reigning world champions - are threatening to go on strike over pay and could miss the Rio Olympics. The team asked a federal judge to give them the green light to strike, with the Olympic Games just two months away. The women argue that the gap in pay between them and the men's team is unfair and they are backed in their dispute by the US Senate, who on Thursday called on the United States Soccer Federation to "immediately end gender pay inequity and to treat all athletes with the respect and dignity those athletes deserve." Lester Munston, a respected legal issues journalist, said: "If this case continues, if the dispute continues, then there is a probability that the greatest women's soccer team in the world will not be participating in the Olympics." Houston Dash's midfielder Lloyd is a huge star in the States Richard Nichols, the players' union executive director, said that whilst they want to resolve the dispute with the USSF, the team are prepared to strike. "We're going to reserve our rights to do whatever we need to do to affect equal pay," he said. The women claim they are paid £2,400 to £3,380 per international, while their male counterparts receive £4,260 to £12,000. The USA women are the world's No 1 team, winning the 2015 World Cup while the men are currently ranked 29 in the FIFA rankings.

For the US women's team, the average attendance over the past 21 years is 11,083. For 2016, the average is 14,617 For the US men's team, over the past 26 years, it's 28,687. For 2016, the average is 32,606. http://www.ussoccer.com/womens-national-team/records/attendance http://www.ussoccer.com/mens-national-team/records/mnt-attendance-by-year

Total revenue generated and profitability are others, and then add in that the USWNT and the USSF are in a big battle over the status of their collective bargaining agreement, and you'll find a fight that goes much deeper than slogans and hashtags. As for the OP and others, the standard of women's football is fine and getting higher when you compare international and club play now against what it was 10 years ago. Comparing women's soccer to men's soccer (and using training matches to boot) misses the point of women's football entirely. If the Matildas were to lose 7-0 to anybody in the Olympics--against a team they actually compete against--there will be outrage.
Bettsj2 Posted 29 May 2016 Posted 29 May 2016 Until they can sort out the standard of goalkeeping, the women's game will never improve. I'm not sure why this particular area is as bad as it is but it continuously turns games into a farce when keepers are getting lobbed from 8 yards, dropping the ball into the net or tripping over when running up to take a goal kick. Of course male goalkeepers make mistakes but the frequency at which the women do is ridiculous.

And are you arguing that this is entirely down to goalkeeping (which you also suggest isn't improving)?Because if you are, nobody that's done any serious work coaching or scouting women's football nearly everywhere it's played will agree with you.
GaelicFox Posted 29 May 2016 Posted 29 May 2016 It's dire the women's game , anyone who thinks otherwise doesn't like football
davieG Posted 29 May 2016 Posted 29 May 2016 It is what it is like all the other levels. I enjoy watching it if I'm in the mood same as local, under 18 etc and even Scottish football. Even the PL Is not like some of the other Euro countries. .
DB11 Posted 29 May 2016 Posted 29 May 2016 It's boring and uninteresting to watch as a neutral. I'm sure if you knew someone playing and were supporting them then you'd enjoy it but I just don't find it exciting to watch

Donut Posted 30 May 2016 Posted 30 May 2016 Womens football basically lacks all the things that makes mens football a watchable product. Intensity, physicality, aggression, technique, competitiveness, athleticism, power, pace.......theyre all missing.

J.Lisemore Posted 30 May 2016 Posted 30 May 2016 I do think the women's game has come on leaps and bounds over the last few years Communal showers still laughing now Let's face it though, it's still bloody awful to watch as Davie G says though, it is what it is really.
Bob Weasel Fox Posted 30 May 2016 Posted 30 May 2016 This. Even tits can't save it. Mind you we have to keep a breast of the changes . . . .
