Relax. Twitter isn't gospel.

Take a break from the hysteria for a moment and go and look back through previous BBC football rumours pages.

Neymar to United, Bale to United, Lewandowski to Chelsea, Benzema to Arsenal, Modric to Chelsea, Messi to Man City, Ronaldo to PSG. It's all been on there.

Where do these stories come from? The BBC cites tabloid papers but actually the tabloid journalists are just reproducing stuff that either themselves or their peers have posted on Twitter as "ITK."

Grown men with thousands of followers, spending their time making up vaguely plausible rubbish for hits and followers.

How many of those transfers went ahead? Absolutely none.

I know this is new to us because, historically, nobody gave a shit about Leicester or our players. Now they do, all of these attention seeking pratts on Twitter are going to be making up Leicester stories left, right and centre. We're going to have a very long summer of stress if people don't start dismissing it all as garbage out of hand.

Mahrez has said he's happy here, Arsenal appear to be chasing other targets.

Chill. For the love of god, chill.

Well, that is the "proof" the bible uses to say it's definitely 100% from God, honest - because another bit of it says so.

So sounds legit.

This is the transfer section, you need to take this bish to Gen chat, unless Twitter is the name of the new guy we've just signed.

The advent of Twitter and the spotlight on individuals it provides means that it's not just the ITKs you have to watch; reporters from supposedly reputable publications are really not that different. It's a ruthless, competitive game and they're under constant pressure to appear more informed on each and every story than they actually are.

I was once part of this game and I'm sure that you all now that any time a reporter writes "I understand" you can translate as "I'm not really sure". The quality of reporting is no better at supposedly reputable publications like the Mirror (ha) and even the Beeb, especially on their website which feeds of click-bait just the same as those betting sites. The Beeb passes on other journos’ stories just as readily, using the same old phrases like: 'sources say', ‘it is believed’ or 'according to reports'. Phrases that are entirely ambiguous and give the impression of having more information on a transfer when it’s highly likely that they know absolutely nothing.

As you know, the grain of truth in these stories usually comes from agents who use the media to generate interest in their clients – they feed info to reporters desperate for news (especially during the summer when there are no games/drama to fill pages); the story appears in print as ‘Man Utd to offer XXX for Neymar/Ramos/Bale’; the journo knows the move will probably never happen but justifies the story via his unnamed source (using the phrases above); said player gets a new contract (and the agent his slice); papers sell/websites get clicks; and then we all move on a day or two later.

The Vardy story is gold for reporters because of Euro 2016 - they can say with 'authority' that he's decided to hold-off on a decision until after the tournament and speculate as fact, when in reality they probably have no idea what's going on other than the bs being fed by agents.
