The genie is out of the bottle now. There are millions of guns in circulation and those that have them won't want to give them up.

Feel sick about this. I took the family to Orlando last summer and we ate at restaurants close to this massacre. We felt safe in Orlando and the Disney Magic made it feel like a different world - a world removed from the chaos and terror in the news. The kids loved it so much that we're going back again this August, but it now seems that nowhere is immune from the threat of nutters intent on mass killing. Tragic, sad, horrible. Fvck knows what the answer is, but I fear for humanity and the future of our planet sometimes....

There have always been murders, atrocities and right nasty fvckers, and there always will be. Don't get too paranoid about the end of the world pal cos it's been a lot worse

I know, I suppose it's just that I naively felt a place like Orlando was immune from this kind of attack. When we were there last year there was hardly any police presence and everyone was relaxed and having fun. Now there's a 'state of emergency' in a city we're going back to in a few weeks. I don't want to be paranoid and always looking over my shoulder, but it's certainly changed my outlook a bit...

Nowhere is safe from psychos. I've been to that area of Orlando too and you would'nt expect it. I've spent years in the surrounding areas of Newtown, CT (Where Sandy Hook is) and you would never ever image the attrocity that took place there.. and Boston. Even in the crime ridden neighbourhoods with high crime figures in the states that i've been to, you wouldn't expect what's reported in all honesty.

I guess my point is that you can't live in fear, or fear for your family wherever you go because be it Chicago or Switzerland, you never quite know what's going to occur.

So if you can't round up the guns, get in better mental healthcare availability for people so that this kind of thing can be recognised and stopped before it happens.

Oh, wait. The conservatives in the US don't like that idea either. Evidently the status quo is clearly much better.

Sorry for steaming in with something of a strawman here.

I can understand that it has gone too far to stop hand guns and pistols but why would a normal every citizen need an automatic rifle? You cannot slip one into a coat inside pocket or handbag. The purpose of is to cause as much injury or deaths in the shortest possible time. You cannot say that it is purely for protection. These weapons and more can easily be bought in even corner shops with no ID. If asked for details then there is always another place available. Assault rifles and the like are for the battlefield not everyday use.

Saw a picture Tweet thing which said 'having tougher gun laws is like banning sober people from owning cars to cut down on drunken drivers'

No, you make it tougher for sober people to become drunk before they get in a car. thus reducing the number of drunken drivers.

In case you are attacked by a mob you need to be able to shoot as many as you can as fast as you can duh??

American gun lovers will always feel its their right even though that blurb was written when no type of guns like todays existed.

It is time it was rewritten. I am sure there are other things in it that are out of date. How much of our Magna Carta is used today and many of our laws have changed although many still exist we do not know about.

When the constitution was written did they even have six shooters? Think they came in about 1870. Plus the guns they had you would be lucky (or unlucky if on the receiving end) if a bullet hit the target. I heard that the OK shootout was the two sides lined up opposite and just firing. When they show them firing from horse and hitting people 100 yards away it is just for movies. Even now it takes a lot to hold a gun steady.

Do people really think gun control will stop these attacks? Total red herring for me.

Gun control didn't stop the Battaclan attacks, if these sort of people want access to a firearm they'll get one.

Same response to this as to Webbo above.

I'm sure committed terrorists like the Bataclan mob would get hold of firearms somehow (though no reason to make it easy for them).

Remains to be seen about this bloke. I know that he had expressed support for ISIS and that they seem to have claimed responsibility (or falsely claimed "credit", maybe?). But his ex-wife has said that he was mentally disturbed and it sounds as if he acted alone. If so, gun control might well have stopped this particular attack (though probably not others). I second Leicsmac's point on improving mental health provision, too.

I can sort of understand how you can get a handgun for protection over there due to crime and their laws regarding home intruders and things but it's very dodgy how your average joe can stroll into a shop and pick up an assault rifle.

There's a difference between a pistol for 'self defence' and buying an assault rifle. Anyone that is in favour of weapons like this being on an open market worries me

He used an ar15,the domestic version is semi and not full auto as far as I know so it's an assault rifle only in looks.

You'd be surprised what is available here too,You can  buy a similar version here in the UK chambered for 22. (On a full firearms certificate).

Difference is you probably wouldn't be able to buy it if you were on a terrorism watchlist.

Plus a firearms license sounds a bit more long winded than just strolling up to a shop and getting one.

This video gets posted everytime theres a mass murder but that's because it's so true. Worth a watch if you haven't seen it.

The killer's father has condemned his son's actions because it is up to God to punish gays.

What is the matter with these people?

Posted

Firstly, he was interviewed by the FBI twice, but they didn't think he was a threat, so he wasn't on a watchlist.

Secondly, a .22 is great for killing squirrels. But your not going to take down 50 people with one. Even a semi-auto 'assault' rifle. A well placed .22 can take down a small deer, but it would have to be well placed. Generally, they are not allowed for hunting.

The second amendment calls for 'well regulated militia' to be able to bear arms. But for some ****ed up reason, this is interpreted as 'everyone can have a semi-auto rifle'.

As someone who'd like to hunt, and knows a lot of people who do, I'd prefer to do it with a large bore bolt action. To get the job done.

For defence of my home, I admit, I'd like a 12 gauge. For defence while out and about, I'll take a .40 Glock. As a prepper, wanting to protect myself and family when shtf I'd take a AR-15 in a decent gauge. But the later really shouldn't be available, especially not as easily or readily as it is.

As it stands, I'll stay in Africa, keep my big **** off knives (guns for show, knives for a pro), pepper spray and dogs. But I won't move back to the US anytime soon. The wife is really not feeling it. And she grew up in Kingston, lived in Chicago and Baltimore. We've both seen the world and the US is depressing right now.

Hillary Clinton just said on the news she wants people who are being watched by the FBI ect to not be able to buy weapons. HOW IS THAT NOT A THING ANYWAY!!!? Crazy.

Gotta love Trump saying he'd ban all immigration from countries proven to have a history of terrorism against the USA or Europe, in the wake of this. Completely ignoring the fact this guy was US born.
