Webbo Posted 30 August 2016 Posted 30 August 2016 I saw a profile a profile of Andy Cole the other and thought how similar Vardy is to him. Drinkwater is often compared to Scholes. Who do you think our current squad are similar to?
Izzy Posted 30 August 2016 Posted 30 August 2016 Morgan reminds me of Tony Adams at times and Huth has shades of Terry Butcher for me.
Dan Posted 30 August 2016 Posted 30 August 2016 Vardy's like a better Andy Johnson. I'm awaiting for the Amartey / Essien comparisons.

Webbo Posted 30 August 2016 Author Posted 30 August 2016 This hasn't stimulated in the in depth, intellectual football discussion that I was hoping for.
Guest MattP Posted 30 August 2016 Posted 30 August 2016 There is a lot of Chris Waddle in Riyad Mahrez.

bovril Posted 30 August 2016 Posted 30 August 2016 Shinji is a pest in the Claridge mould. Vardy reminds me of Dickov the way he chases down full backs. Obviously miles better than Dickov ever was. Some of Drinkwater's through-balls remind me of Lennon's. Shame we haven't got anybody to take corners like Garry Parker.
eblair Posted 30 August 2016 Posted 30 August 2016 albrighton a right-footed guppy, especially when he was playing right wing back
brockmyster Posted 30 August 2016 Posted 30 August 2016 Drinky reminds me of Izzet sometimes, not the biggest of stature but always gets stuck in and both had/have a great technique
Unabomber Posted 30 August 2016 Posted 30 August 2016 For some reason I initially read this headline as cambiasso with players of the past. Instead of thinking that's weird my first thought was oh god no col please no.

It crossed my mind so clearly that Albrighton himself could have been whipping it in between my synapses! I dunno, there's a joke in there somewhere.

fazzyfox Posted 30 August 2016 Posted 30 August 2016 Mousa's first v Barcelona reminded me of Joachim v Portsmouth at the City ground play off semi, that change of gear on the half way line.
Donut Posted 30 August 2016 Posted 30 August 2016 Id compare Drinkwater to Scholes later in his career, where he didnt break late into the box as much, but instead controlled and orchestrated everything from the middle of the pitch and rarely misplaced a pass. If you want to speak in football manager type language, a stereotypical "Regista" in my opinion. You could liken his playing style to current players like Xabi Alonso (but with more of an engine and in a less possession dominant team), or Toni Kroos. Riyad Mahrez has the kind of game you would liken to Lionel Messi (with less quality of course) or Eden Hazard (but from the opposite side). He assumes a wide position, but primarily wants to affect the play in the centre of the pitch rather than play like a winger. He can pick a cross at times, and we have seen him do this for Vardy notably in the game v Chelsea at home last season, as well as the ball he played v Everton at home last season. But most of the time, his thoughts will be to dribble into the middle of the pitch and either slide a through ball, or shoot. Andy King of the league 1 winning season was very reminiscent of Frank Lampard in the way he would time his runs to arrrive late in the box for the cut back from the goal line, and got lots of goals from this advanced position. He still does this to a degree but our tactics dont really suit this kind of movement now, and arguably he doesnt have top Premier League quality to play the role like he did in the lower leagues. Jamie Vardy is a complete forward, at times he bursts through onto a through ball with speed like Aubameyang, combined with a high pressing and work rate you would associate with someone like Suarez or Tevez. The difference being for me, Vardy doesnt float around as much as those two, he runs into channels but someone like Tevez would also come deep for the ball more than Vardy.
