Skateboards

Recommended Posts

Hi, I've never owned or really been on a skateboard before but want to get into it and own one. I want one for going round the city etc. Not for tricks. I have looked them up and think cruiser skateboards look the most suited. Anyone have any advice on skateboards and I only have a budget of about £20-30.

thank you

20-30 is a pretty tight budget, I think you'd be lucky to get anything of quality under 100. And quality really does matter, even if you're not doing tricks.

Your best bet would probably be to do a bit of research on different brands and then see if you can pick up a used one somewhere.

I've got a block of wood and some wheels? Yours for 30 quid! I'll even draw a skull or something hip on the wood

Don't skimp, cheap decks are fragile as anything. Been years since I last skated but the Ledge on High Street used to do decent setups for about £70, probably worth looking in there (with inflation probably nearer £100 these days).

Might be a non-starter though, there are much easier ways of getting about. Mastering the basics of skating takes a lot of patience and usually a lot of pain

You're probably going to have to save up a bit more pocket money or wait til Christmas.

lol

Argos might not be a bad shout as they quite often have big discounts on older stock/designs which could mean you'll get more board for your money. If not Argos I'm sure other places will be offering discounts on older/last years designs.

I wish my 7 year old boy would be happy with a £30 skateboard instead of wanting one of those segway board things at £200 +

As I said in new to all this. Is penny skateboards the best make? And would I be able to get a decent used one for under £50?

Penny just make those small plastic cruisers? Those are pretty cheap and I think I saw a few complete setups going for as little as 35-40. But I can almost guarantee you'll want/need to upgrade the bearings.

As mentioned by others, find yourself a proper skateshop and tell them your situation (new to skating, no money etc), ask them if they know anyone who's always buying new gear and might have some old stuff going cheap. You'll probably end up finding someone willing to part with 'regular' skate decks and wheels as those usually get replaced while they're still ok for cruising but not ideal for tricks.

I guess your biggest concern will be bearings that spin well (do the wheel spin test and you'll see the difference between good ones and cheap ones) and trucks that don't slip.

I'm tempted to say it's too cheap, that they must be cutting corners somewhere. But I've been watching some reviews on youtube of penny skateboards etc and I guess they can be quite good value - so long as you understand what you're getting. They won't roll or turn as well as a more expensive board. But they will move, lol.

I kinda like the one you posted coz it is larger than a standard penny board, which should make it more comfortable and easier to control.

Thank you. I might get a cheap one to start out and if I enjoy skateboarding and get good at it I may buy a more expensive one.

Yeah the bigger one is meant to be easier to ride. Think I might go for that one, thanks for the help

Why not go for a proper skateboard? Thoroughly enjoyed the 4 or so years i skated and regret stopping as now I'm too chubby to be on a board.

I would have suggested that initially, but to get a board that does more than roll at that price range is asking a lot.

I'd stick it out for a while longer in your pram then think about a skateboard when you're a bit older.    Sweet dreams ...     Bless.   :)

Cheers for all the patronising responses, I'm 19 if you were wondering.

Anyone ever play Tony Hawks American Wasteland? What a piece of gaming genius that was!
