Caceres

When his name sprang up I had a similar reaction to yourself. However, as much as his experience and CV are highly commendable, the last thing we need at this very moment is a player who will undoubtedly demand a high salary and won't be fit to play at the top of his game, perhaps until he completes a pre-season in the summer. Another way to look at it is the fact that he's only played in 21 games in the past 2 seasons, many of those coming off the bench - before he did his achilles over a year ago - an injury could easily end a career and certainly will damage his pace and strength. He also has no idea about the dogfight we're in and the physical demands of the premier league. I'd say the risk would have been fairly high and I wouldn't be surprised if Southampton are left underwhelmed.

Cacares to Southampton on a 6 month deal and 17 miles better than what we have

been calling for this one since the summer, pissed off now.

Low risk high reward and we aren't even in the frame as usual.

It isn't an opportunity if these people don't want to come here!

You can call any target you want, but if they have no interest to play for us then they don't come, unless of course they get no better offer, ala Kunte.

I suspect we may have done but that it was a very short conversation based along the lines of 'who would I be playing alongside, how many games do I need to play and where are you in the table?'

You'll be playing at right wing for twenty minutes every 5 weeks.

I'm sorry Lee, but lately, you've been quite prominent by trying to apply some kind of Football Manager wonderland logic to real football and our situation.

It's not like signing any centre-back or big name is guaranteed to have a positive impact: Age, (Premier League) experience, character, persona, injury history, availability ... There's so many factors coming into play. And in Caceres' case, it's a rather risky call, given the type of injury he sustained and the amount of time he was sidelined.

Hysterical behaviour won't solve our problems and neither would Caceres have done. At this stage, it smacks of desperation - keep in mind that Southampton's investment needs to pay off first. He may never be able to play professional football again.

Given Ranieri's knowledge of Caceres in Italy, his admission that Wague isn't ready/good enough it surprises me we didn't go after him. I admire the lack of panic from Ranieri, or is he just oblivious to the situation we are in?

More like a case of Ranieri being frozen out with regards to transfer dealings, something he quite openly admitted in the Burnley post-match interview (or at least he pointed in that direction).

I cannot believe that is true. Ranieri would not work under such a farcical regime. Yes he's got help with Macia and Rudkin but he has repeated he makes the decisions. Something has gone whiffy given our lack of transfers but with limited options left in the free agent market I'm sure he could have influenced such a deal if he wanted it.

He was asked about the announcement of the Wagué signing (announced at 10pm that night), to which Ranieri replied (and I'm paraphrasing) "I don't know, I'm just the (head) coach, not the manager".

To me, that sounds like the transfer was either ratified without his prior knowledge or against his will.

Or perhaps he had more on his mind than a loan signing. We had just lost and he would have known little about it. Unless he was sat on his phone all match listening to the talks.

So poor that we missed out on this guy. Such a piss poor transfer policy of ours. We should have had him and his international mate Gaston Ramirez. Then we would be so much more confident in getting out of this shitty mess following two solid signings, in the two key positions in which we desperately needed to strengthen. Why can we all see the failings, yet those that need to, can't?

My best guess is that we don't know the half of anything, and nothing is as straightforward as it might appear on the face of it...

People do realise he ruptured his Achilles' tendon and hasn't played any high level football since?

Those injuries finish careers.

This is reason he hasn't been picked up since the summer as he's seen as a massive gamble. Not sure how close he'll be to match fitness or if he's been training with anyone?

All true, but Southampton have done extensive medicals on him. They appear to be happy. We could have too.

Only time will tell with this one.

Why, why, why were we not in for this guy. Totally fit what we needed and not a sign of any interest from the club!! It seems like when Walsh left our transfer policy went out the window. It is significant that the moment Walsh arrived at Everton he brought in Gueye for 7m. It was obvious that he was quality, even in that awful Villa side last season. If we had had him at the start of our season I think we would have faired much better.
