Interesting comments on Barnsley Fan Forum:

Matty James is definitely a Premier League player. Oozes class. I'd say he's still playing at only 80% fitness as well. Every week he looks better and different sides of his game are creeping in. He didn't waste a ball last night and some of the tight spaces he dug himself out of were incredible.

Admittedly it's Barnsley so have to view this with a Championship sides glasses, but perhaps give a couple more games at Oakwell then then bring him back for the run-in?

Yeah I can...

He's about 6 foot tall,  bit chubby, dark hair and injury prone I think?

You missed that he's an absolute 10/10 looker.

From a Barnsley fan:

Wow.

Yiadom looked every bit the international player he's become like night. I cant find the words to describe how good he was. He was good down the left but down his natural side he's something else.

If we can keep in touch with the playoff pack until Matty has reached full fitness I really think we have a chance. This lad was a starting centre mid in a team that won the Championship and it's obvious to see why.

They have Yiadom Boayke from my FM 2014/15 Serie A winning Atalanta team fame as well?

****ing off Sevilla for Oakwell now, bye.

Edit: its a different guy with the same name, fuming.

Lots of two faced cnuts on here.

Agreed. Where have all the people with short memories gone who were saying 'We've left James behind' 'He's not good enough for top half PL' - amazing how quickly a bit of success goes to people's heads.

I'd have him back in our starting XI in a heartbeat

Just because some people rubbished him, doesn't mean those praising him in this thread have. So I don't see how it's two faced unless you know for sure they've done both.

Barnsley would be my pick of "That Team" that creeps into the play offs. And I could honestly see them creeping up if they got that far.

They've dealt with the loss of their three best players with ease and managed to discover another couple of gems in the process.

It's great to see James and Elder both starting games and i've always liked Barnsley (great away day) so I hope they finish the season strong.

Surprised people write him off so much in that sense, if you actually compare their last championship season and the first premier league season James was far more creative.

I guess people get drawn in with DD's hollywood passes rather than actually what comes from them.

Something can't be correct in those stats... just noticed a 100% pass completion over a season.

I liked the lad... but bloody hell he wasn't that good. lol

I'd like:

----------------Kasper-----------------

New RB--Amartey--New CB--Chilwell

----------James--N'didi---------

Gray--------Kaputska-------Lawrence

--------------New Striker-----------

Sell Vardy, Slimani, Drinkwater, Mahrez and and bench the oldies who we can't get rid of

Only problem is, would we be able to hang onto Gray, Kapustka, Ndidi & Chilwell? Maybe even Lawrence might clear off. Surely Kasper would walk?

No way Kasper will play in the Championship!

I was trying to be optimistic with that one lol

Doubt we will be able to sell Vardy either.

Zieler potentially is still a top keeper. I think we would miss the leadership and passion that Kasper has though.

Would like to see a real leader in our team if we do go down, but can't see it from any of the ones who would stay, so would need to bring someone in.

There is no point Kasper leaving though, unless a big club wants a starting No.1. No point going to a Watford, Middlesborough etc who would likely pay him less and just as likely to be relegated.

Obviously, we all think he is good enough for an Everton or even Liverpool type club, but whether they do, is another question and I wouldn't be THAT surprised if he did 6 months or a full season in the Championship, if the right or big enough club didn't come calling. First thing I would do, is slap the Captain's Armband on him if he did stay.

Don't put money on it, if his wages get slashed on relegation then people would take him and they could afford him. Same goes for all of them.

I know contracts aren't what they used to be, but they are all tied down to them and they may prefer to stay, knowing they will all start every week in the Championship.

We wouldn't need to sell them, as we would be able to off load players like Slimani, Mahrez, Drinkwater etc and with the money from this season, and parachute payments, as well as Billionaire owners, we would be ok financially and not have to sell them.

I think we would be able to keep all our young players for the first season in the Championship, unless a crazy offer came in for Gray which was too good to turn down etc.

Forgot about the wages relegation clause.

I really hope that is true, as it would be painful to know players like Wes and Simpson are on so much money in the Championship!

IF Vardy carries on in the same form for the rest of the season, then a move for him and the club would be good.

Still think we would be in a strong position to be able to hold onto the players we want to keep, especially the young ones like Chilwell, Gray, N'didi etc.

I think we would be left with a very poor squad if we go down.I think Gray and Chilwell would both definitely go. After all Liverpool were interested in Chilwell in the summer and he is one of the few to enhance his reputation this season. Ndidi would be snapped up by a side like Everton or even Newcastle should they get promoted. Probably be James, King, Mendy and Albrighton for the midfield 4.

They are all under contract though and we don't have to sell. Like I said, contracts aren't what they used to be, but if there is no release clause, we don't have to sell any players we don't want to. They stay, and will get regular playing time and a decent wage, or they try force a move through by going on strike, which you can see didn't work for Ulloa, and he only did it as he wasn't getting any playing time, whereas all these young players would be.

If we go down, I'd like to keep:

Kasper, Zieler

Amartey, Wague (?), Chilwell, Benalouane

James, King, Gray, Lawrence, Kapustka, Ndidi, Mendy

Ulloa, Okazaki

Undecided on Morgan and Huth

Vardy / Slimani, may stay due to theirage but wages are too high now - get rid

Albrighton, Simpson and Musa can all **** off on a free

Forgot Drinky - I don't think he'd stay and given his attitude this season wouldn't really mind! Although DD+MJ is a good partnership

Musa could still turn out to be decent player. Not seen enough of him yet, but so far, I would lean to selling too.

Will probaby start against Millwall as striker again, so will another chance to impress.

Morgan and Huth 100% can leave though. We need to start again with our back 4 if we go down, starting with Chilwell at LB and perhaps Amartey/Benny at CB

Albrighton and Simpson would be more than good enough in the Championship.

Bring back in the likes of James and Lawrence, try and keep the younguns we have on our hands and we could have the making of a good side.

A striker would be high on our priority list ad i could only see Ulloa sticking around in that position.

James: "Barnsley have showed such a belief in me."

Reds midfielder Matty James spoke to the media ahead of the Derby match this weekend.

The central midfielder has been an ever present in Paul Heckingbottom’s side since his January loan move from Premier League Champions Leicester City, playing an integral part of the recent success.

James was asked about his time at Oakwell so far and how his mindset was following an injury lay-off during his time at Leicester.

He said, “The last few weeks have been amazing for me. To be playing regularly and playing lots of 90 minute games is a big thing for me because I haven’t played properly in around 20 months. For me to have this feeling of being back playing regular football is a really good feeling for me.

“I needed this because I was starting to doubt myself and wondering what I was doing wrong. I don’t think I actually was but the opportunity just wasn’t arising and I was desperate to play football. Then when the chance came to join Barnsley I took it with both hands, I just wanted to play. I knew there was a good group of lads and the manager was great when I spoke to him, he was enthusiastic and really positive towards myself, it made me feel wanted and like I could do something for Barnsley as well.”

Following his involvement in regular Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday matches, James feels that he has dealt with the rigours of regular first team football again and his body has coped well.

“I don’t think I had doubts about the injury because I had been training regularly for a good seven to eight months and I had played some U23s games. I know what the Championship is like and how tough it can be, it was just kind of how I go about playing at that level again. There were nerves before the game kicked off but as soon as it kicked off it felt like it had only been a week since I did the injury. It felt normal, it felt right and it’s been really enjoyable so far. For me now it’s all about playing as many games as I can here and doing as well as I can for Barnsley.

“Barnsley have showed such a belief in me and I would never burn any bridges in that sense. I can only be thankful to this Football Club for the belief they showed which was really touching to me and if I can do as much as I can whilst I am here I am happy, then we’ll assess in the summer.”

Matty’s parent club Leicester City recently had a well-documented change of manager. Although on-loan with the Reds until the end of the season, James has kept up-to-date with the on-goings in the East Midlands and keeps in touch with his colleagues there.

“It has been a crazy story for everyone in football. I think some the criticism the players there have come under is a bit harsh, they weren’t the ones who made the decision. People looking on now seem to want Leicester to do the opposite of what they did last year. They all just need to focus on what they need to do and get the points on the board to try and become the team that they were last year.”

This weekend the Reds take on Derby County at Pride Park. Barnsley ran out 2-0 winners during the previous meeting earlier in the season at Oakwell. As we’re now approaching the season end both teams still have play-off aspirations and James was asked whether the Reds could make it.

“I don’t think we can rule it out.” He stated. “My first season with Leicester we got in to the play-offs with the lowest point tally. We couldn’t buy a win at one point but then you put a couple of wins together and a couple of the teams in the top eight lose, then all of a sudden you climb. You can never rule anything out in this league as three or four wins puts you right up there, three of four losses puts you at the bottom! We’ll just go to Derby to try play our football, do what we do best and see what happens.”

Matty was really solid before his injury. He's just not been 100% fit since then, so it's hard to judge if he could fit in the premier league. Hopefully this spell at Barnsley will get him ready for a shot to be a part of the squad next year. If Danny Drinkwater wants to leave, James wouldn't be a bad replacement. Not saying we shouldn't still look for a quality, established player in the transfer market, but last summer shows that players acquired from outside the premier league can be a gamble.

That all assumes that we stay up lol

If we go down, obviously Matty James could be plugged right into the starting XI after we sell off half the team.

If anyone at the club would realise that, it would be Shakey. If a new guy comes in, Matty might be sadly forgotten.

He'll probably bugger off back to Barnsley then if we cant get him some games in the prem....
