Kante was a smooth £25 million profit - coinciding with the fact that the player wanted to leave, which we'd hopefully all agree is good enough reason to not keep them here and contribute positively. Mahrez could well hit a £40-50 million profit if we get a good price for him; it's unlikely he'll hit the heights of our title winning season again, ergo, we move him forward and we move on. In fairness Kantè was a £50-70m pound player. Selling him for £32m was a punch to the stomach.

Whilst I don't disagree in the slightest, given that he was one third (albeit the most important most city fans' opinions) of a trio of players that acted as the catalyst to our success and that he had only done well in one season here in England, I get the feeling that his desire to leave for a more established club drove his price down slightly all factors combined.
Bluearmyfox28 Posted 31 May 2017 Posted 31 May 2017 Far from it. Kante had a release clause due to stupid f**king Rudkin. N we stuck to our guns n told Mahrez to play for us during our champions league campaign. Very rarely do our players get the final say in what happens at our club.
Nickfosse Posted 31 May 2017 Posted 31 May 2017 I remember the days when we hadn't got a single player that any club would buy in a million years! If putting together the the most successful team in our history means every man and his dog sniffing around during summertime then that's a price I'm more than happy to pay.
Sly Posted 1 June 2017 Posted 1 June 2017 All clubs are selling clubs. Even the Spanish. How many clubs hunting for Neymar??
katieakita Posted 1 June 2017 Posted 1 June 2017 We spent more last season than be brought in so selling club no not by any means in fact we probably spent more last season than our combined total spend in our history, but if players want to leave and Kante and Mahrez now do it is time to move on. These are the 2 previous winners of the players of the season that cost around £5 or 6 million together chances of that happening again are very slim. Pogba cost around £90 million and had an OK season. Also the hindsight shown about Kante and the venom aimed at Rudkin still rears its head. Never seen anything that suggested NG wanted to come here at all but we were the only ones that would pay the money £5.6 million or so every club in Europe had the chance to look at him yet nobody rated him that highly, nobody so if the only way to get him to sign was to agree a release fee of 6 times his price to get him to sign that is a fairly safe deal. If we are in talks with a striker over a £20 million move and he reckons he is going to tear up the premier league but wants a £60 million buy out clause after 12 months do you say yes or no to the deal but that does not make you a selling club .

I remember when the talk was about selling King for I think £6-£7m? & thinking how huge that offer was at the time.

It depends how we replace them though. You can get away with selling good players if you bring in as good/better players - this is something we failed at last summer. (Look at Southampton, for example, they sold Lallana but got in Mane and they did this well under Koeman). I don't personally believe we'll get a £40mill profit, more like £25mill-£30mill and that's if any club actually bids. It's still a great profit but I'd be interested to see who we go for as a replacement. We've got a whole squad to rebuild. A good business model doesn't cut it if the players coming in aren't as good as those going out.
foxy boxing Posted 1 June 2017 Posted 1 June 2017 every club buys and every club sells but to lose your best players is very disappointing. every player has a price and if they want to leave then there is very little the club can do! we made a huge profit on Kante albeit not enough for the fans and we'll make a huge profit on Mahrez although still won't be enough for the fans. what we have to do is get decent replacements and stabilize the team and move the team forward without dropping like a stone! it is depressing to lose these players but need to make sure the TEAM is secure and is able to keep moving forward!
FoxinNotts Posted 1 June 2017 Posted 1 June 2017 We're no different to any other club when it comes to transfers. Recently though, we've had some good scouting. It remains to be seen whether we still have any skill in the markets, now that there have been some changes.
Nalis Posted 1 June 2017 Posted 1 June 2017 The key is the rebuilding process. Atletico Madrid and Dortmund are probably the two big 'selling' clubs yet they rebuild and become stronger every time a big player goes.

dylanlegend Posted 1 June 2017 Posted 1 June 2017 Of course we are, until we can compete with Man City / Man Utd / Chelsea in terms of wages we will always be a selling club
