As said in the Politics thread, I got myself a Nova Craft Prospector 16 a couple of weeks ago, a bit of a 40th present to myself and my family :)

Good for you mate - I've been celebrating that very same thing this month... (sadly not the buying of a new canoe)

I used to be a keen kayaker - I took my 3* and went on an instructors course - used to a fair bit of marathon paddling but my passion was white water though I had a few very nasty scrapes...

I used to paddle a K1 and a Dancer back in the day but it was a tad small.

Been seeing these expedition inflatable boats (some self inflating) for some years now and like Buce mentioned fancied doing a bit of solo paddling with a bit of camping thrown in... but I already have more than one selfish hobby!

I used to quite a lot of watersport generally, Sailing (30 foot yacht, Laser, Topper) Windsurfing (mainly inland lakes), kayaking when I was a teenager in various sea kayaks, ww kayaks on the weirs on the Thames around Weybridge  / Walton area.  This is the first step back onto the water with the kids after selling my Laser about 14 years ago.  Cant commit to a sailing club at the mo, so being able to stick all of us in a canoe and hit the river is very appealing!

I like to be able to actually move in a straight line without too much effort, but you go for your life!

My ultimate canoe ambition is to spend a couple of months in the Canadian wilderness, but that will have to wait till my daughter is grown.

However, I've got a week to myself in July (the womenfolk are off doing some girly stuff with grandma) so I'm planning an expedition. It will either be canoeing down the River Wye from Glasbury to Chepstow, or possibly the Caledonian Canal from Fort William to Inverness. In both cases there is a taxi service that will return me and the canoe to my starting point, so I can commit to the trip without factoring in a return journey.

Wild camping in either case.

Very Nice.  Was chatting to the Canoe shop guy about the river Wye, he was certainly talking it up.

It's beautiful, Jon.

I walked a few sections of the Wye Valley Way a few years back, and met a few canoeists then; there are a few rapids around Symonds Yat, but other than that it's a relatively straightforward paddle with the current.

Bit more of a trek from Sussex mind you.  I have the Medway canoe trail within an hour of home which is quite appealing!

Ah, I didn't realise you were Sussex based; that looks a nice day out.

This website is really useful - it lists launch points (and much more) for every waterway in the country:

Nice one Jon. Grest way to get away from the rat race and up close with nature.

Though a little bit of me is  disappointed that you haven't declared the purchase of one of these ;)

I've been thinking about getting a one man kayak and seeing where I can get to from the Ouse. Any tips @Jon the Hat/ @Buce on where to get one for a decent price?

Tbh, AJ, I haven't researched kayaks, so I wouldn't know what constitutes a good/value for money price.

Maybe @Swan Lesta might be able to help? Failing that, Google is your friend. :)

I'm a bit out of touch to be honest - it depends what class of water is near AJ's 'Ouse' and how bigger fella he is and what he wants to do with it...

What a beautiful part of the world Jon.  I was down there at the weekend on the South Downs and will be spending quite a bit more time there over the coming months.

That Bear Grylls may be all action and be able to deal with any eventuality but walked in front of our Land Rover ...   dozy twonk  ! ...   nearly had him !

It is indeed.  We moved from Surrey nearly two years ago, and really enjoy the open countryside.  Lovely walks and bike rides too.

The Ouse is the river that runs through York and meets the Trent to form the Humber Estuary.
