Perspective on yesterday

Mooching away from Old Trafford I was pretty down beat. We had pretty much no threat and we're totally dominated.

Having watched the game back on TV, without the adrenaline and emotion of being at the game I saw a game where we were certainty dominated (by half a billion £s worth of players) but we also defended very well.

M & M were excellent I thought. Maguire looks like a £50m player already in the current 'market'.

Playing two in the CM against these 'big' teams is too much to ask. They can only try to stem the tide - which they did well up to 70 mins. After that Jaymo and Ndidi visibly tired. It has to be 3-5 -2 to get a hold of midfield for periods of the game.

Vardy was basically playing alone against three after 20 mins, he didn't play well anyway, but again it was asking too much with Oka spending a lot of time dropping back.

Gray did himself no favours at all, while Mahrez showed great dribbling in a small spell second half, but again all to no avail. His propensity to be wasteful/greedy/not pass to team mates in better positions, continues to be costly for the team and his own assists tally!

I think most people have the right perspective on this. I refuse to accept the result as significant in terms of a real football competition. I (and I suggest most proper football supporters) regard today's Man. Utd. as a global marketing business (with an appropriately large customer base) rather than a football club, and therefore they don't count. So there.

We need to find that happy medium. We was no threat whatsoever? Is it me I would rather have a go and lose?

I wonder what CS's objective is - (e.g. first... "not get hammered")

My personal opinion is some of that man u sites are really overrated. Leicesters performance yesterday was quite impressing considering the price difference in team as you rightly pointed out.

Excellent point, totally agree with you.

IIrc Gray and King came on while it was still 0-0. They were pretty positive substitutions.

On paper, we were never going to take points from Old Trafford. My hope is, that come the 1st Sept we'll have Smalling added to the squad, then after the international break we'll have the injured players back.  Get the Chelsea game out the way and we should then start to put some points on the board.

This has been a difficult start to the season, no way am I panicking. Yet!

My reality on yesterday's game is that there is no surprise that we lost. Man Utd are the strongest they have been for years imo.

However, I am disappointed in how we played. I can understand it, but I think I'd rather we actually made a fist of it and had a real go.

To be honest though, I don't think we are a particularly good side. Our midfield at the moment looks poor at this level.

We were dominated from start to finish, we have to accept we aren't as good as some think.

We have a lot of average players, an inexperienced manager, and lack ambition to try and get a result, anybody who sets up to defend for 90 minutes at old Trafford with our team is off their rocker.

The result was always going to be a defeat, I just would rather be defeated trying to win a game, than offering next to nothing in attack, in the hope for a draw.

We have seen this tactic over and over again, and the same defensive mistakes cost us every time, the management need to accept the players aren't good enough to see 90 minutes out without conceding, especially against the better teams.

Shakespere needs to stop picking Okazaki if we are playing like this, the bloke cannot retain a ball, stand up, or offer  anything positive, we need a striker who has the strength and ability to hold it up, to allow the team respite to reorganise.

The manager once he has all available will be crucified if he continues to keep picking his what some see as his favourites, yesterday was slims type of game, and did more in his short appearance, than Okazaki did all game.

I really hope Shakespeare's term works out, but I'm concerned about his ability, and ambition in certain games, he is learning but he needs to learn fast, or he will struggle, winge over.

I for one will be really disappointed if we do not buy another midfielder before the close of the transfer window.  James just returning from injury is quite slow at premier league level, Ndidi needs support.  If we lose Drinkwater to Chelsea as expected we will be relying on Iborra who to be fair is untested at premier league level.  Our over reliance on Andy King, is not the answer.  Yes, a great club servant but not in know way a premier league midfield player.

I for one was disappointed yesterday.  Yes, Utd are a good side but to go there and expect to defend for 90 minutes is expecting trouble.  Take the shackles off the team and at least attack them put the likes of Bailley and Jones under pressure we didn't in the whole game.

Shakespeare needs to learn you can show the bigger teams too much respect Pearson was guilty of this and so too is Shakespeare.  As proved in 15/16 we are a good team if we are allowed to attack I noticed both in the Brighton home game and yesterday Albrighton seems frightened to cross the halfway line, what instructions is he getting?

We need a creative midfield player and another defender.  I will see if we get either?

I'm continually amazed that we have 7 CMs and we still seemingly need another one.

you cant genuinely be serious?  Again, we lost impetus after the substitutions unlike Utd with theirs.  Taking off Albrighton and Okasaki was a mistake  Yes, Okazaki falls over a lot but he defends valiantly from the front.  Why take Albrighton off?  King is poor at premier league level and his passing sideways and backwards doesn't contribute anything.  Again Shakespeare showed his inexperience with the substitutions.  We appeared to be holding them well and they were beginning to run out of ideas but like at Arsenal our substitutions were ill timed and not necessary.  I am beginning to think it is written in Okazakis contract he cannot play more than 70 minutes in any game.

My point was they were attacking subs, rather than settling for a draw.

Really?  Are they all premier league quality?  Hand on heart are they as good as Neil Lennon, Muzzy Izzet,  Mark Draper, Andy Peake, even Alan Birchenall.  The answer is no.

Bar King we signed them all though. 4 of them in the last 18 months.

And we still need an 8th midfielder at the club.

I will make the point that Bournemouth looked better then us with less budget against Man City which is worth about the same if not more the Man U

we can make Europe tottenham, arse, everton and west ham haven't been up to scratch we need to take our chance when we go against chelsea we go in with our full line up and give it a go. We nearly beat athletico madrid at home so if we play to our best chelsea shouldn't be a problem

What's the point in turning up then... I'ts a good job MON never had this attitude otherwise we'd never have got results there (and they had a much stronger side then).

A win and a draw wasn't it at Old Trafford under MON? Admittedly could be wrong but some of our results under him away at the big clubs were pretty bad.

Bournemouth also looked bloody dreadful against West Brom and Watford. As a result they have zero points.

Okazaki all but set up Man U winning their peno as he failed to make a five yard pass or a proper clearance.

Don't restrict this to Pearson or Shakespeare....we'd have the same tactics against the big teams away from home under Ranieri. We won 2 away from against the big teams and one of those was a right backs to the wall job.

This time last year we were caving in four to Liverpool, four to United, three to Chelsea.

Didn't do to bad really considering the opposition just no real threat up front, Mahrez was playing for himself and James looked leggy about 60mins in so thought the subs would help us see it out and maybe snatch a goal but wasn't to be and there quality came through in the end.

Nothing to worry about get Nacho and Vardy up top next game unleash.
