West Brom and Coventry legend Cyrille Regis has passed away aged just 59.

The former striker died on Sunday night following a heart attack, reports theBirmingham Mail.

Regis started his career at the Hawthorns, going on to make 241 appearances for the Baggies, scoring 81 goals.

The French Guiana-born forward also won five caps for England between 1977-1984.

He moved to Coventry that same year, netting 47 times in seven seasons at Highfield Road.

Regis also played for Aston Villa and Wolves before retiring in 1996 after leaving Chester City.

In 2004 Regis was voted as West Bromwich Albion's all time Cult Hero in a BBC Sport poll, gaining 65% of the vote.

In the same year he was named as one of West Bromwich Albion's 16 greatest players, in a poll organised as part of the club's 125th anniversary celebrations.

He was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2008 Birthday Honours.

59 is no age...When he retired, he seemed to always wear a smile. His interviews were pleasant

to listen to.

His part in a 3-5 win against manu, was even for foxes fans a pure  pleasure to watch...

Today first a few  thoughts towards WBA, they took on the Black  players, earlier than most,

For Cyril Regis,  his career msde him an idol and a legend to some, simply no greater honour..

RIP...

Far to young to see him but I know how high he is regarded by the clubs he played for, especially WBA, and just football in general. RIP.

I was saddened to see that he had died of a heart attack. I remember deeing him play for West Brom against City at Filbert St. Laurie Cunningham inspired West Brom to a 5-1 win and they got a standing ovation from the City fans as they ripped up apart that day. Neverdseen that before or since

I remember him being a very punchy dynamic striker, particularly with half chances taken on the volley or half volley, stuck them away emphatically. A lot of people were pleased for him when Coventry won the F.A.Cup, I know when I used to play some 5 a-side at Moat in Highfields there were a lot of inspired players who wanted to "be Regis", not just kids but young adults. Thoughts are with the Baggies fans in particular, "Nice one Cyrille, nice one son, nice one Cyrille, let's have another one" should echo around a ground somewhere this week.

This is very sad news. Cyrille Regis was a magnificent player and the courage and dignity that he and other black players of that generation showed in the face of vile abuse deserves so much respect.
