Mate. Ronaldo has dragged Portugal on his own pretty much for the last 8 years. Minimum.

If it wasn't for Ronaldo basically being the greatest player to play the game they wouldn't have even qualified for the euros they won.

They went past the group stage with 3 draws! They did nothing of note apart from winning the Euros (that's a big achievement btw), Which BTW, Ronaldo left the finals early AND STILL WON THE TROPHY! How did he carry them? Just like Ronaldo's 3 goals vs Sweden to send them to the world club, Messi did the same with Argentina against a much tougher group.

In recent memory IIRC, Messi got carried  3 times against Really good teams. 1- in a 4-0 win against Real Madrid in La Liga, 2- the 6-1 win vs PSG and the 3-1 win vs Juve in the CL finals. Ronaldo got CARRIED 3 games back-to-back-to-back in the last CL (2 semi-finals games and the final). If Messi played like that, no way his team would carry him 3 games in a row.

Stand by it. I just think france has more to offer even if they havent been at their best.

They do have more, but I don't think they have enough to batter anyone.

We've already had something similar in the game against Serbia with the Mitrovic incident, so the quota's already been used up. :D

Besides, I rate Costa Rica, did an admirable job against Brazil until very, very late into the game - but them beating us? Hmm... They have nothing left to play for and a draw will suit Switzerland just fine.

I want Costa Rica to win because I want to go there on holiday next year ,looks amazing, and I also paid about £40 for a chicken when I went skiing in Switzerland once.So I don’t want them to win,and there wasn’t much snow.

I think it’s a penalty for 2 reasons,

the player controlled the ball onto his arm, doesn’t matter if it was mistimed and accidental, as he headed it onto his own arm.

he prevented the Nigerian player having a chance on goal by sticking his arm in the way.

 But there again, I’m thick.

Controlled?

It absolutely does

Did he? Ighalo had a clear volley which he pulled wide

When did you go skiing? In August? :D

Sorry for having been ripped off, should've asked me first. Lots of cheap places to eat, even in the Alps.

Agree about Costa Rica, beautiful and relatively safe country ("The Switzerland of Central America") - my No.1 destination for diving or snorkeling.

Well he has  headed it onto his own arm hasn’t he. And it wasn’t exactly blasted at him from point blank range was it, unlike Wes Morgan’s peno the other year when the Liverpool player whacked it at him from a yard away.

He certainly did but it’s clearly not deliberate - it’s in effect a deflection onto his arm. The referee clearly indicates this as the reason he doesn’t award it.

Two years ago over New Year.

Our friends have had their  Chalet 15 years and had never seen the grass.

Drove to Gstaad for a tiny bit of snow and there lies the problem with the chicken I think!!!

I know it’s an if but, if that ball was going in the net and the player had prevented the goal by the ball deflecting off his arm, would it have been a penalty.?

Argentina are shit, definitely, resurgent is a laugh.

But France have been beyond average themselves and playing in a much easier group.

They're both crap mate.

Agree boss I think Deschamps is frankly a joke of a manager. But Sampauli is a dead man walking and everything behind Messi is dustbin lid quality. Can only see it ending one way.

I knew Argentina would find a way to win that, they'll be swiftly dispatched by France in the next round I think.

By the letter of the law no but you would struggle to find a ref that wouldn’t give it

Surely it does matter, as then it is not an deliberate handball?

I mean that is the rule?

Feel really sorry for Nigeria. They are a colourful, exciting side (when they want to be..) and the sneaky Argentinians have sneaked through again.

Wow, all this hate for Argentina! lol

If it hadn't been for that dodgy penalty for Nigeria, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

English fans cheering on for the French now - oh, how the times have changed.:crylaugh:

Be happy about the fact that we've got Ndidi and Iheanacho back early and that Musa will be snapped up for £50m by Real Madrid this summer.

I won't cheer for the French. I'll be happy whichever team goes out from those two. Just a shame both can't be eliminated in the next game.

lol Ronaldo gets carried more than any top 10 player and you have the face to say this lol Might as well call Eder or bale if you are talking about how's clutch

neither of them get carried at club level they just play in really good sides.

at international level they both play in shit teams. portugal won the euros and ronaldo is a national hero, gonna win the golden boot at the world cup and captains his team like a boss. messi constantly bottles big games, misses penalties in finals, tried to retire and has to rely on marcos rojo shinning balls in to get past ahmed musa.

next.

@ScouseFox This gonna be a moderately long post so I'm gonna put it under "spoiler" if people don't feel like scrolling past the long post or are not interested in the "Messi vs Ronaldo" debate......

Oh, Really? so you gonna just brush off the last 3 games of the past champions league or the fact that Ronaldo can be rested for a long time in the first half of the season without everything catching fire? cool!

That's a false narrative. Ronaldo is playing on the best football team in the recent history of football while Messi is playing with players like A hobbled Iniesta who can't play for more than 60 minutes a game, an RB in Roberto who in reality is a CM covering and Paulinho.............Paulinho. There is only 1 player on Barca who can, without a doubt crack Real's starting 11 and that's Messi! Ter Stegen and pique has the second and 3rd  best chance. Busquets and Suarez can start depending on the game plan because Benzema is playing more as a supporting striker To Ronaldo.

Best RB in the world: Carvajal

Best LB in the world: Marcelo

Best CB in the world: Ramos

Best CM in the world: Modric

Best RF in the world: Bale

(probably) the 2nd best Mid in the world: Kroos

Top 3 DM in the world: Casemiro

A top 10 GK in the world: Nevas

A top 10-15 CB in the world: Varane

A top 10 Striker in the world: Benzema

And yeah, the Second best player in the world in Ronaldo.

And Let us not forget players coming off the bench like.....ahm.....Let's see...... Isco, Asensio; Nacho, Kovacic, and Vasquez and James on loan

Please don't mention The current Barca team in the same breath as Real Madrid.

Again with the false narratives. Both teams have talented individuals (Mainly Argentina in attack....... But do they perform When it Matters? Like Aguero and Higuain having 2 goals... Combined in the last 2 world cups). Purtogal may lack in big talent but they have a thing Argentina don't, and that's a "unit". a Team while Argentina are what they are, A group of individuals.

He's not even the top scorer nor the best performer in the world cup.

Fun fact, Ronaldo who "carried" Portugal didn't win the POTT in Euros that his own team won. But wait! It gets even better for your man lol He didn't even get the top scorer award. That was Greizman! The same Greizman who won The POTT. Ronaldo Had the same goals and as assists as Payet and Giroud (they had a better Minute to goals Ratio btw).

Hook, line, and sinker!

2008 was just 10 years ago BTW.

And here's a bonus clip of Rolando missing a pen vs Iceland in the euros that could've won them the game .....

This was just 2 years ago. Surely you can remember this...

Those that were saying Messi was terrible, really?

The skill for his goal was unbelieveable. If your benchmark for a good game is to dribble past 4 players at every attempt and for every high risk pass to come off for a goal chance, then youll think 99% of any players games are bad.

"Messi is the only Barcelona player that could get in Real Madrids team"

Barcelona won the title by 14 points, 17 clear of Real Madrid losing just one league game in that season. If you say so...

Felt sorry for Nigeria.

Musa had another good game and these two games should mean we actually make a profit on the guy. Iheanacho had a poor game - decision making was slow which surprised me considering he plays for us. I think Ndidi had an up and down game yet he still made more tackles and interceptions than anyone else in the group.
