Sweden V England Quarter Final 7th July 15:00 KO

The core of our squad are all under 25. Pickford. Stones. Maguire. Lingard. Alli. Sterling. Kane. Futures bright for England with plenty of good youngsters coming through.

Yep, I dismissed him as a yes man when appointed.

Lots of nations appoint internally, under 21 managers etc - Joachim Loew for example - and have done all right. We've consistently appointed club managers like Capello who have been expensive flops. Working with these players from under 21s to the senior side is a huge plus. Players look like they like him and want to do well for him.

Whatever happens the future is bright for the English national side. Imagine a Kane / Rashford striker partnership, with both in their prime in 4 years time?

I agree with all of this. Wasn't sold on Southgate to begin with, but he's doing an excellent job. I think managing a national team is a totally different job to managing a club, and I think GS might have been born to do this.

You're right - whatever happens now, we all have reason to be optimistic. Probably since after Euro '96, I've found it difficult to get enthused about the national side, but the current team is different from every team since then. I get the sense that they're more of a unit and less a collection of famous names. The formation and style of play fits the players and vice versa. Also, the attitude seems much better. It's almost like they're not haunted by the ghosts of history anymore, hence the penalty shootout win. I feel like I can get behind them now and they won't let me down. I don't expect them to win the World Cup, but now I feel like I don't know whether they can or not, unlike before.

Even if we get no further in this campaign, I'm really looking forward to seeing what this young England side can do down the line. I just hope this generation's Gazza emerges soon, as that's clearly where we're weakest.

Good point but we need to develop a couple of creative central midfield players, bit like a modric style of player.
