I stole a hub cap off a Fiesta once, since i lost mine. The guy came out when me and my friend was nicking it, damn i dont think i ever ran so fast. Never again! Next Fiesta i had i made sure had alloy wheels.

Haha I lost one off mine on my 1st car, so one night when out in loughborough i parked next to an identical car, hoped it would still be there when i returned, it was so i whipped one off and drove away

I think I have some demons at the back of my head, i was brought up with my step dad, who drilled some morals into me, but my real old man, was a bit of a sponger, he never worked from the age of me being about 2, and sometimes i think my DNA is a bit confused lol was at tesco's once when i got to the cash machine someone had obviously been distracted at the last minute as the machine was at the cash withdrawal stage, the temptation to remove £250 quid to cover my christmas shopping was quite high, luckily my morals kicked in and i cancelled the transaction and took the ladies card to customer service, Cow never even said thank you.

That same night a car full of lads, pulled up outside the entrance ran in, lifted shit loads of xbox/ps3 games, jumped in the car and sped off before security had even moved, I had the chance to trip one up, but I felt my good deed for the day had been done, and didn't fancy spending christmas, worrying about getting a slap of a gang of lads.

Moral of the story, stick to having tesco's delivered.

I'm not very confrontational at all, I'd have clocked it and felt unsure what to do before deciding not to do anything at all. I've occasionally thought even if something very consequential was happening would I do anything?

I just finally caught up on all replies.  It is pretty varied but I guess that is spice of the life I suppose.   If it was some beggar or something then I would have let it go or if it was someone rough who clearly do not give shit about stealing then I would have reported it to the shop.   The thing is for me that it was someone who on the outside looked really well off but was bloody terrified about the whole experience judging by her body language.  I am no Tincy but I just thought about newspaper articles where I read how a random kindness from a stranger turned someone's life around and wondered whether if this is our Eureka moment.   Soppy I know.

I find it better to not worry about what other people are doing tbh. Probably not the right attitude but unless it affects me or my family I don’t pay any attention

It was more than likely Winona Ryder, now she's done filming Stranger Things 3.

I've taken a few people down who have tried to shoplift and leg it but in all honesty its not worth the risk, CCTV is there for a reason - far better than being stuck with a dirty needle or threatened with a knife.

I just had bit of a moral dilemma which I thought would be interesting to post about.  Today,  I was at a major London train station when I decided to get something to eat at an independent (I think)  cafe.  I was browsing when out of the corner of my eye I saw a fairly well dressed woman with floppy hat stealing some food and putting it in her oversized handbag.   I am not 100% certain whether she was stealing but given her slightly panicked reaction when she cottoned on the fact that I might have saw her and the manner of her immediate departure which includes glancing over her shoulder in my direction convinced me that she was stealing.  I admit at that point I frozen and did nothing.

I paid for my food and went outside where I saw her again.  I wasn't sure whether to report her or to approach her.  This was made even complicated due to my deafness as I have very limited speech so it wouldn't have been easy for me to call her out on it which is partly why I frozen earlier.

So I was flip flapping at that point wondering what I am going to do when I finally made my mind up to write her a note along the lines of that even I saw her I won't report her as I don't know her life circumstances but additionally that she should re-evaluate her life choices.  I also checked whether if she is ok.  By the time I finished the note she was gone (I think she saw me while I was writing as there were some glances in my direction from her)

So basically I was wondering what you all would have done if you were in my shoes?

Interesting thread. I won't read the other comments until I make mine.

Personally, I probably would have said something. I'm pretty confident and so I think I would have addressed the situation. Probably outside of the cafe, similar to how you were thinking. Because I wouldn't have wanted to get her in trouble if she really needed it.

I can totally understand your situation and given as you say, you have limited speech it makes sense for you to write a note. Even that would have taken balls.

You did the right thing.

Interesting thread.

A lot of us have probably stolen something in the past, whether that was a dare as a kid, an apple from someone's garden, or by downloading music or a tv programme illegally. We all have our own idea about what stealing really is and how bad it is in given circumstances.

In the past I've been confronted with the situation a few times, always by what I'd class as amateurs or people in need. When it's been kids I haven't reported them but said something to them. When it's been people in need, I've gone to the shop/stall (both times I knew the salesperson) told them and paid for the goods taken - a pain chocolat and some fruit, so not expensive things. If I saw an organised theft maybe I'd report them and if it was a house theft I'm pretty sure I would. For me each case is individual, in your case, I'd probably have offered to pay the stall owner without telling them who the person was, if the woman was a stunning chick I may have offered to take her out for lunch - okay I wouldn't have - perhaps I'd have talked to her to find out if she needed help but it's not always a wise course of action.

This isn’t ****ing Aladdin; there is no need for anyone to steal anything in this country.

I always tell the shop if I see someone nicking stuff.  They are usually part of a security radio network and can at least warn other shops.

So you've never stolen anything? Not even a paperclip from work?

When you let the shop know what is it you're hoping is going to happen to the "thief"?

Does it make any difference to you if they are a young kid? or someone with mental problems? Or someone living rough?

Not judging you, just interested in your thought process.

Tbh, I'd have neither said anything nor had a moral dilemma (let alone posted about it!) Shoplifting happens, for a myriad of reasons. Not my place to do/say anything, neither do I have the inclination to concern myself about it. But then I'm not a shop keeper.

I took the odd pick and mix when I was a kid of 11 or 12, nothing more serious than that.

I would hope the thief would be caught and punished.  That punishment would obviously vary depending on their circumstances, not for me to decide on that.  At the least it would alert the shop staff.  For instance the other week I saw a little pikey kid grabbed some stuff from the front rack in Smiggle, and run to her Mum, who sent her back for more.  I alerted the staff member, and gave her a description to share with centre security.  No idea if they caught them or not, but CCTV would have seen them I am sure.

If I WAS 100% certain, being ex TVP, and having detained a good number of shop lifters, I would have made a Citizens Arrest, and taken her back to the shop..I understand though, why some people would do nothing, but to me it would be second nature.
