A £1.1 million go-karting track is to open in a disused Leicester warehouse.

The city council has approved plans to create a 500m track within the former Wolsey Clothing unit in New Star Road, off Troon Way, which has been vacant for around a year.

TeamSport Indoor Karting is behind the venture.

The firm, which operates 26 other tracks around the country, plans to open in Leicester in November.

The company says the track, which will have a bar and a children's party room, will create 30 full and part-time jobs.

It says it expects to recruit largely from the city’s student population, and employ other young people.

Karters
A multi-level track at the venue will incorporate bends and straights, and will be open to 16 drivers at any one time.

TeamSport Karting managing director Dominic Gaynor said: “We’re delighted with the decision from the council.

“The location is great, close to the city and just off the ring road, making access easy for both residents and visitors to the city.

“We’re looking forward to adding karting to the list of leisure activities available in the area when the track opens in November.”

Noise concerns
The council has approved the track plan despite receiving a number of complaints from people living in the area, which is home to Troon Industrial Estate.

One person who lives nearby told planners: “A very worrying concern is the potential increase in noise where I live.

“Go-karting is bound to create a great deal of noise, especially in the evenings and at the weekends, adding to what we are already enduring from businesses during the day with lorries being loaded.”

Further concerns related to an increase in traffic in the area but the city council said the previous industrial use there was already a precedent for lots of vehicle movements on nearby roads so they approved the plan.

I thought one of the advantages of being indoor is that you can't hear them outside.

Sounds fun with its straights and bends and whatnot but £1.1m is a bit steep for a day out.

With the way the £ is going it could end up being a days wages

was going to put the same. wouldn't be a track otherwise. who writes this shit ffs.

It's not just printed media. On BBC Breakfast yesterday they talked about "unauthorised fraud", you know as opposed to the legitimate, legislated fraud that you need a licence for.

Obvious statements aside, isn't there already a go-kart track in the Troon Way area? I went there several years back, so might not be, but it's hardly unique to Leicester. There's Stoughton, Six Hills and one out near Loughborough too.

It’s in Sutton in the elms.

I am aware, as I live there. It's classed as a settlement within Broughton so basically the same thing, and when you say Sutton in the elms to Leicesterites they usually look at you blankly.

30 extra jobs is a good thing but it's hardly going to change the economy much in Leicester

you've got to count all the supplementary jobs it will bring in. Go kart tyre shops, go kart petrol stations, go kart social clubs, go kart drive-in cinemas. Probably close to 1000 new jobs when you add it all up.

Used to be one on Humberstone Lane, between Colby Road and Silverdale Drive, if that's the one you meant? Shut years ago though.
