A chart topper from 1974 which was a reggae cover of the David Gates (of Bread) original.  David Gates wrote it after the death of his father.  It was subsequently also covered by Boy George.  I still prefer the original so I'm posting that as well.  Enjoy.

Sort of sad and understated. Good version.

 

I suppose that I'll always prefer the sparer, angrier version of Men they couldn't hang, from my youth.

This one gave me the chills when I first heard/saw it . Still does.
