Questionnaire for Leicester fans on the significance of football stadium names

Doesn't mean much for me. I'll always say I'm going to the Leicester game and if it raises money for the club indirectly or directly it's worth it imo.

We don't need the money any more though. That's the point. We sold the rights to our stadium's name when we were desperate and in the doldrums. We don't need cash from it anymore - a more historic heritage like name would be incredible statement of our INTENT for the future!

too young to have gone to filbert street sadly, but I definitely prefer the name(Filbert street); Gives the club more of an identity.

unfortunately its the way of the world now.we've just had a new stadium built and they have a sponsor name on it.the problem is its worth too much money to turn down.

What’s a name?!?

After the investment they’ve made into the club, willing our debts etc, they could call it the Silly Sausage Stadium for me.

I knew every club's stadium name when I was 15, from Valley Parade to the Goldstone Ground, to Highbury to Victoria Ground to Maine Road to Dean Court.

I would have no idea now if you asked me who plays at Northern Commercials Stadium, and I get totally confused who plays at the Emirates, Bet 365, Vitality etc etc,

I loathe corporate sponsorship, it sucks the soul out of football. But unfortunately it's here to stay.

Slightly off topic, but I never refer to the team or the Club as 'The Foxes'. Ever. Just sounds so artificial.

Get all that, but...

At its heart football is about place.

Filbert St reflected the city it  stood in, idiosyncratic and pretty weird, sometimes drab & forgettable, sometimes raucous & crazy - but completely individual and unlike anywhere else

Yes, things have changed and probably we had to go, but I think we lost something when we moved down the road.

Ok, we left behind some good memories of the old filbert street, but never did I see or hear a Leicester city home ground rocking like the season we won the title. This is the ground that we achieved our greatest ever footballing triumph, nothing like it was ever achieved at the old filbo. As far as I'm concerned our owners can call it what the hell they like they have earned that right.

That would just attract a lot of pricks!

Fortunately, they usually mention the clubs name before the stadium's name in all broadcasts.

Absolutely - It's special because of what we achieved there. Doesn't really change my point though. It's architecture by numbers - it could be anywhere.

Can't say I was much of an admirer of the old filbo though architecture wise. I mean that awful cowshed laughingly call the " popular" side " you know the one that the away fans stood in and chanted " what the ****ing hell is this " and the awful seating and bad visibility when it was made compulsory for no standing. People throwing things and spitting from the double-decker onto the kop fans underneath and the stinking victorian toilets. Give me the new ground any day over sentimentality for a ground that was well past it's sell-by date.

Personally, I never gave much of a toss what away fans thought of it...It was a dump, maybe, but it was our dump. Not fit for purpose in the 21st Century. That's probably because the 21st Century is blander, more corporate and more conformist than the 20th. And whatever the highs of 15/16, the atmosphere of the KP seems generally flatter to me.

Honestly, I don't mind "King Power Stadium" as a name. Like others have said, it's easy to abbreviate and out of context it sounds pretty cool. And I can't begrudge the owners pushing their brand, given all they've ultimately given to the club in return for a bit of advertising.

I never liked "Walkers Stadium" either - looked incredibly tacky with the logo and adverts plastered everywhere, regardless of the connection of the brand to the city, and was easily p*ss-taken as the "Crisp Bowl" by opposition fans. So I wasn't in the least bit sad to see it renamed, as some were at the time.

As for where it ranks amongst branded stadia, it's definitely one of the best and least offensive. Drove past Stoke's ground the other day and was reminded how utterly sh*te it would be to play in a place called the Bet365 Stadium. Even aside from the shadiness of naming a stadium after a betting firm, it just sounds... bad.

The absolute winner for crap corporate stadium names, however, comes not from Football but Rugby League. I have a friend living up in Northernland and they're big St. Helens fans...

... who play, of all places, at the Totally Wicked Stadium.  Be thankful, folks.

I think that will be a key part in your findings. Some of those that are happy with the stadium being branded may feel that way due to the success we have had. Without the success the brand may irk more.

For your work this is something that would be very difficult to quantify.

While I won't deny that the great success Vichai and Top have brought us has been a factor in acceptance of the "KP" as a ground name, I preferred the name from day one compared to what came before it.

I'm not a fan of branded names either, and would prefer it to just be known as Freeman's Wharf or Filbert Way, but it's been a "branded" stadium from day one, the precedent is there, and compared to the Walkers Stadium days, both the name and the branding itself is just... better. The logo is clean, understated and fits the colour scheme of the stadium better than a big yellow blob.

Sustained all season no but the play off victory over Cambridge was a magical night and atmosphere.  For what the owners have done for this club ,they have certainly earned the right to name the stadium king power .

Its interesting that, within the sample at least, we seem to be most accepting of the corporate name - just wonder if that is really a reflection on the esteem the owners are held in by the majority of supporters rather than a reflection on corporate naming schemes.
