Woyo Coulibaly unimpressive against Inter tonight.

He's not an ex-player.

Did you watch it?  I watched the first half. Was alright.  He was positioned a lot further inside than I would have expected. First Inter goal he should have got his foot on a ball out wide.  The game seemed to largely pass him by.

Not an ex-player no but out on loan.

I don’t rate him at all.

Yeah, just checked the fact.

Anyone else feel hat tricks are rarer to come by these days?

Is it the type of football being adopted these days?

Having 5 subs doesn’t help I’d say.

Just seeing that he’s moved club again thought I’d look into Slimani’s career with us and since.

Whilst with us from 16/17 Slimani scored just 8 Lge goals & 10 whilst on loan from us.

Since leaving us in 20/21 the then £30m record signing has played for 9 different clubs over 6 different countries scoring just 24 Lge goals, in some shoddy leagues.

That’s a grand total of 42 league goals in 10 seasons and yet still people will say wasn’t given a chance and probably way down on our worst purchases because of that reason.

Most posters worst ever signing representation would be Akinbiyi who was only with us 2 seasons and everything focused on that 2nd season despite him only being there for the first half prior to relegation.
He cost £5m in today’s money £9.5m he was our top Lge scorer in his 1st season with 9 the following season 01/02 it was Brian Deane with just 6, I’m not sure Akinbiyi can really be blamed for the relegation he only played half a season and still got a 3rd of the goals Deane got.

Once he left us he went on to play in both championship and Premier league scoring 50 Lge goals in less seasons and harder lges than Slimani.

I think if we have as I couldn’t find 1 although there must be, a worst ever player thread, then for money and return Slimani must top it.

Disclosure, I am neither Akinbiyi, nor related to him or associated with him before someone says hello [ ], I’m just a guy who saw through the give Slimani ago hype 😂

Not sure how you work out £5.5m then was worth £9.5m now. The guy was our record signing at the time by nearly double the previous record.

One of the reasons with the Akinbiyi disappointment was the chances he missed. We were making chances for him, especially in that second season, but he just kept missing. There’s one infamous game against Liverpool I remember where he should have had a hat-trick but missed three sitters basically.

Akinbiyi was a bad sigining by any metric.

I asked AI and the adjusted for inflation its about 11M today

but what 5.5m got you player wise in 2000 was arguably more than what 11m would get you today, so it isnt really a fair measure in my opinion.

in any event, he was sold within two seasons for half the price we paid for him, and barely appeared (and never scored) in the top flight again. he only had two seasons in double figures in the second tier, with one of them only being 10 goals in all competitions.

I don't bare him any ill, because he always looked like he tried bless him.

Transfer inflation isn't household inflation and ChatGPT (people on here really need to stop treating it as the oracle of all knowledge) isn't going to be a substitute for existing research such as this.

The estimate isn't far off though, based on what a Freddy Kanouté or a Patrick M'boma went for, he would have cost around £14-15m, and he did actually hit a run of form in his first season, as well as giving us THAT moment v Sunderland, he's probably still better value for money than Patson Daka

Aside from the bigger clubs, how much was the average transfer in 2000? Certainly wasn't £5.5m. That was a lot of money and reflected in the fact Akinbiyi stayed our record signing for years and years after. He was a terrible signing.

But I would argue other big signings have contributed much less and are worse value for money than Slimani. Adrien Silva spring to mind, perhaps Matt Mills too. And don't get me started on the current crop that have contributed two relegations.

Also from 2002-2010 we could barely afford to spend £5m on the club's total wage bill, let alone a single signing.

Dj Campbell cost 3.5m & only scored 5 goals for us in 4 seasons....does Akinbiyi just stick in peoples heads due to the 5m (a whole 1.5m more than Dj), the size of him & relegation season because there have been a lot worse.

It's the perception and optics.

Akinbiyi was a LOT of money at that point in our development and the team around was supposed to be elevated by him.

He missed SO many chances that previous "cheaper" strikers (Cottee/Claridge/Robins) would have buried and also, sadly for Ade, he wasn't Heskey.

True I was going to add to a post earlier if we have a worst player thread should it really be called “The perception over perspective worst player” thread.

Certainly the fee sticks in our heads along with relegation although as mentioned earlier he only did half the season before going on loan so he only with us for 1.5 seasons.

As often mentioned when sticking up for players who came on big fees it’s not the players fault but for Akinbiyi it’s never mentioned.

I also think really he came at a point of change, we’d just spent 5 years in the top 10 of the premier league, winning cups and playing in Europe….to then be managed by Peter Taylor.

We were feeling flush I guess settled in the top 10 He was really a victim of our decline with MoN leaving, Lennon going with him & going from having Heskey & Collymore to having a broken Sturridge, Benjamin, Deane & Akinbiyi burdened by Taylor putting a club record fee on him.

if that's not a damning indictment of how useless Daka has been, I don't know what is :)

You're saying that Akinbyi scored 9 in his second season?   Wikipedia says that he scored 11 in 58 league games with us.
