@StriderHiryu will be pulling his pud rotten over this :D

Honestly this is good stuff! Not the biggest fan of the presentation, but the content is very good! It shows how balanced our team is, how effective we are and how despite us all knowing we didn't play at our best, still won the game comfortably. It's also got a decent perspective on how we try and create overloads on either wings so that either our wide forward or full back is one on one versus one opponent. Simple strategy but really hard to stop. Says it all that Potter sacrificed Aaron Moy out wide to try and give better protection against our raids.

Indeed!

I'm planning on making another write-up soon, but I was away on business all last week, and only just managed to see the game at the AMEX myself. Will see if I can get something done pre-Everton.

It's an article looking at our defensive base from which we've won all and conceded zilch.

We attack in packs. Sound familar?

But rather than just attacking to nick the ball in hopes to get a counter attack on. There's a containment purpose with the hunting now. It's less primal and more tactical. It's ushering and shepherding with the press into areas. It's the work of the whole team with Vardy leading the charge when he can but from the report, most of the defending is done in around the midfield by our midfielders and fullbacks. The Centre backs are mostly there to mop up if we're attacked and to push up and build up play from the back if we have possession.

Ndidi who's already been a defensive beast is now making his tackles and interceptions count more with getting it to a team mate, same with Soyuncu. Not having to chase a loose ball helps with turning the opposition over immensely.

Even when they've gone to try and outnumber us in the midfield and cut off passing lines, with Youri and James's ability with the ball. Even if they have to chase and press and funnel, they're both amazing enough to bring a bit of magic out to split the opposition.

And if we're the team to have possession... Then our midfield 3 will just toy with them with our 1-2 touch passing and movement.

Brendan is a ****ing Goddamn coaching genius! He's got our team to play and understand the different parts of our system but it plays to our ability. We can pass from the back and counter-attack. But it shows our spirit once again, as it's a very team dependent system again. Everyone working for each other. But it isn't just to spring the counter for Vardy and Mahrez. It's to dominate the opposition as well as the ball. Hence the whole Man City/Liverpool mix comparisons.

"Brighton may take confidence from an all-round dominant display that was just short of the finishing touches."

Did they watch the same game as me? They had 15/20mins of dominating the game, where they did lack the finishing touch. But minus that I felt we were comfortable and hardly the dominating display they're describing for Brighton

I think it’s fair to say that Brighton dominated possession in that 2nd half, which was disappointing from our point of view. They didn’t dominate anything else.

They had 7 shots and 0 on target

We had 19 shots with 9 on target

Brighton’s expected goals was 0.73 versus our 2.94

It depends how you’re defining dominant I suppose.

All-round dominant display would suggest to me that they controlled the game.  Possession was around 52% and 48%, hardly dominant in any terms.

They played well for a good chunk and should get credit for that, but total dominant performance bemuses me.

They really lack that player to get the ball and distribute it to the forward. They're a few players off being a fairly strong team

Yeah I'm not sure where he got that from! They were second best to everything in the first half and it should have been game over after 45.

That said, I would commend them for having a good style and being a progressive team. Compared to the way they played under Hughton, in the second half especially it was chalk and cheese. But at the same time, they took undue risks against a team renowned for having one of the best ever counter attacking players in Premier League history. They pushed up *both* full backs at the same time, as well as central midfielders. As an example, Liverpool's midfield 3 actually drop back a bit when their fullbacks push on. This mean they did get a ton of the ball, but they could be undone in just one or two passes, which we proved on several occasions.

But if you compared them to say West Ham, Everton, Watford or Southampton then they looked a class above those teams. It might take them a while, but if they can transition the squad over to one Potter is happier with then I think they can easily become a solid midtable team who play good stuff, if not a little better. The potential is there for them IMO.

In fairness, after reading the whole article my suspicion is that it was written by someone whose first language is not English and as such they may not be familiar with all the connotations certain idioms carry, like "all-round". Whilst their conclusions tended towards the flowery and hyperbolic, I'd say the actual meat of their analysis was very grounded and good.

From a not so perfect position behind the goal, it looked like they overloaded in the wide areas to try and nullify our full backs which left too much space in the middle for us to play in ...... i was quite impressed with their tactical set first half up but it seemed designed just to stop us and left them with no options to get forward and out us under any pressure

their tactics second half to push on too much was naive at best .....

I thought they looked good. They held us off well with their main defender out, admittedly because of our poor chance taking. As the video well pointed out, it was only when they allowed us to counter attack that we punished them.

A lot of it passed me by. I’ll admit I had to look up what half spaces were, and I still only vaguely know.
