Absolute farce of a final wicket. Crawley and Pope nearly fluffed it!

(by the way - I still think we have a very very slim chance - Ducket will need to score very big though)

No but I expect we should be able to replace his role in the side if India were.

You sound like you’re arguing for a complete replacement (whether bowler, bat or w/keeper, I assume). That didn’t happen for India either; they weren’t allowed a complete substitution. The rules for years have allowed a wicketkeeper to be substituted but the substitute can’t bat for them. It’s the wicket keeping element only that can be substituted. So England  haven’t been unfairly treated at all, as you suggest, by not being allowed to put in a fresh bowler if the original pick is injured on day 1. Whether complete substitutions should be allowed is a different issue, and many have called for it. But there’s been no unequal treatment here; if Smith has been injured another wicket keeper could come in and keep wicket, but we wouldn’t have been allowed to sub in another batsman to compensate for losing Smith’s runs too! Subs that can bowl and bat are only allowed if the player they are replacing has a concussion injury (or Covid).

You'd think this is too many, but who knows?

I've given up trying to predict what this England side will do. (They've definitely got a better than 5000-1 chance ;))

Sundar being allowed to do this is criminal from the England bowlers.

True, but it’s entertaining. I love a last wicket stand, even better if at least one is a certified long eared cotton tailed bunny.

Rain could be the winner it seems but obviously loads of time for a result .

We don’t have to rush things ..

Two days left

any rain (might be a bit in the afternoon session) is irrelevant to a result. Will be either series drawn or England 3-1 win

England have apparently bowled 315 more overs than India in this series. Absolutely bonkers. Maybe Bazball is exciting batting wise, but the bowlers are flogged ?

Bowlers are absolutely flogged!

It's an incredible stat considering the current series score.

Think on average it's the most England have ever bowled in a series too.

Not a surprise that we can't keep any bowlers fit. That's not to forget that Stokes asks his bowlers to hit the deck hard with pace. It's not like we've got a Jimmy Anderson tying up an end bowling 80mph for 25 overs. We've got players like Brydon Carse and Josh Tongue bowling it all over the place at max revs.

Agree with that, although l do like Carse, he will do well in Oz. We have bowled & caught very poorly in this Test. It will probably cost us the game.

Another issue we have is we don't have a world class spinner to bowl over after over. I guess we have too many seamer friendly county tracks to help them.

We were so fortunate to have Jimmy for so long (Broad too). Both kept themselves fit & hungry. I doubt England will see their like ever again.

I don't have a problem with Carse or Tongue as such but they're both expensive.

The point i'm trying to make is that we don't really have too many bowlers that can hold a line and length and keep a batsman tied up. Atkinson and Archer can do it but their fitness is iffy so you can't give them a 7/8 over spell.

It's all well and good being able to give the likes of Carse or Tongue the ball for an hour or so but they'll likely go for 4-5 an over.

I 100% agree that we won't see a Jimmy or Broad for a long time but we should be looking to pick bowlers that can slow the game down while retaining a threat. I think we lack that balance in the squad.

I know we tried Sam Cooke, is he worth persevering with ? I dont really follow the County circuit much, but his stats look decent.

I'm not that much of a County cricket fan either but Matty Potts is one i'm annoyed doesn't get much of a go. He impressed when he broke into the test side.

But it feels like England have set up expecting for the Ashes to have flat pitches with pace in them yet Australian pitches in the last couple of years ago have a lot in them for the bowlers. I think we might see a similar series to this one where England will be forced to bowl well in excess of 1k overs.

Keeping out Cummins, Hazelwood and Starc on pitches that are designed for them is going to be bloody hard for the likes of Crawley and Pope who have clear technical deficiencies in their batting. I think Duckett will struggle too because he just does not leave the ball. They'll leave it on a length all day and wait for him to nick one.
