The fishing thread

Just thought I’d re-start a thread to see if any fellow FT’rs go fishing?

I fish for carp mainly and have learnt a lot about rigs, tactics, kit and the such like by reading up and watching stuff on YouTube

Anyone else on here go fishing?
Any tips to share, pics of fish you catch, stories to tell?

Cheers

Got into fishing about five years ago now having never really fancying it in my younger days. Spent fortunes in the first year buying new gear every week. Like Col I soon picked up several new tactics for catching Carp mainly.  Slowed down a lot last couple of years mainly because I sort of went off the commercial fishing lakes a bit and liked natural venues more and more specifically fishing lures off the rocks into the sea, which I absolutely love.  I also did some fly fishing for salmon and trout in Ireland which was awesome. As much as I enjoy catch and release fishing there’s something more addictive in catching your dinner. Hoping to get over to Ireland in the summer for a full week of fishing.  On the lakes in the morning for trout mainly and then on the rocks in the afternoon for mackerel and pollock.

Did it need a new thread?

You talk enough carp in the main forum.

I’m with you on the commercials lakes. They are just big holes in what was usually a farmers field. I tend to go for the more natural venues and am a syndicate member in two of them.
One of them I’m fishing tomorrow and it’s bloody hard! 20 ft deep in the middle and it’s an old gravel pit. Holds carp of up to 25lbs and some big bream shoals too.
Gonna be putting out two rods, one using a snowman rig, the other a balanced wafter.

Hopefully the weather holds!

Classic FT nonsense.

Why is this in General Chat ?

I’m led to believe that sitting in the countryside dangling your rod with the aim of getting a nibble has been designated as a sport

No need for carping about it. :P

There's only two sports with fishing being one of them. The rest are games.

I got into carping about 15 years ago and caught some incredible fish. I let my club membership lapse a couple of years ago and lost the love a bit. I tend to get my fix on You Tube these days but often fancy a few summer evenings on the floaters.

Hadn't been since in my teens but started up again last summer as my kids wanted to start going. One of my lads had an incredible day where he caught 20 carp on a candle float and he was hooked lol

Went for the first time this year good Friday and I managed to catch 1 small carp and a 2" dace, foul hooked them both lol

Didn't put my lad off though, he's still keen but maybe I'll wait until it's a bit warmer.

It's difficult to track them down in that depth of water but if you see any signs of them showing themselves near the surface then it's always worth trying a zig rig at this time of year. I've had some success with carp over 20lb using small pieces of black foam when all else fails. It's quite an explosive take. Good luck.

Fishing is one of three sports, hunting horse racing and unarmed fighting. They were designed to provide survival practice in the event of a war. Everything else is a game. A game of football, the Olympic Games etc. The 6 cans of lager and 20 fags are for steadying an anglers nerves whist putting his wits against Mother Nature.

Hello mate
Unfortunately not, but then again I only fished for 6/7 hours.
Tried everything... zigs, pop ups, wafters, but them carp weren’t having any of it.

No-one else caught either all day.
The fish were topping and moving about but weren’t biting! One of them days.

Gorgeous to be out though.

Not good weather for daytime carping. A spell of high pressure can put them off and make it impossible.

Its all the more satisfying when you eventually catch after spending vast amounts of time trying to work out a lake. I spent the first 9 all day sessions on my club lake blanking trying all sorts of the usual methods until finding the key. It's one of those waters containing a decent stock (mostly large!) which have become very riggy and crafty, not the place for a quick bite and a pasty.

Over the next two years I caught numerous 20lb plus carp with 4 going over 30lb (31.8lb my pb) and a 9lb Tench! A 40lb'er still hasn't graced my mat though.

Going to have to get the gear out again soon.

Sounds like the place I fish is pretty much the same mate. The high pressure thing is much more important than I ever realised!
This place is so full of natural grub that I don’t reckon the big carp are too bothered about boilies etc.

Next time I’m gonna try a big lob-worm and see if I can tempt them with the ‘naturals’

And too right about the satisfaction. If catch a big carp, listen out for a massive cheer from the West Leics area!

They're not huge pits. 30ft. Found most success fishing in the middle as its not hugely deep.

Doubtless I'll end up wrapping the line around a tree regardless.
