I follow and watch Wolfsburg and I don’t think there would be much point in signing him other than as cover for Barnes, certainly not as a starting winger on the right side

 

Pretty much always plays on the left, and although quality he is also quite inconsistent

Can’t see it happening this window but we do need cover/competition for Barnes as well as a RW. Pereira could plug that gap in the squad until next summer?

We do eventually need it but with Barnes, Perez, Albrighton and now seemingly Sowah, and hopefully a new starting right winger I don’t think we have the squad space for another backup winger without shifting a player on

 

Although not the best on the left compared to how good he can be on the right Sowah can cover Barnes if needed

 

Might be possible if Albrighton does move to Burnley, as I can’t see Perez leaving this window

Actually his goal contributions are slightly better playing on the right, though it's only about 15% of the time.

Very good player, certainly too good to be Barnes back up but surely nor the player we need for wide right. £12m is ridiculous though, he's worth double that. Wolfsburg were class last season.

This is what a Liverpool fan site (RushTheKop) said about him recently (this was before the Euros):

 

Sure 4 goals and 3 assists does not scream of a world-beater by any stretch of the imagination. However there are lots to admire about the 22 year old attacker.

Firstly, Brekalo is versatile. He can be deployed on either flank and also as an attacking midfielder just behind the striker.

He is blessed with pace, and nimble feet, and makes 5.32 successful pressures per 90 via fbref, which is higher than the average in the Bundesliga this season.

On top of that he can be productive on the ball too. He ranks in 5th place for progressive passes made by wingers averaging 5.38 per 90 via Wyscout above players like Leon Bailey, Moussa Diaby and Emil Forsberg.

Coming from an esteemed academy like Dinamo Zagreb, where the emphasis is on developing strong minds and players with excellent technical abilities and problem solving skills according to the club’s former academy director via First Time Finish, Brekalo could offer the key to unlocking low defensive blocks.

 

At 22 he has age on his side, and for those worried about his productivity in the Bundesliga, Brekalo has 4 goals and 3 assists in his last 10 games for World Cup finalists Croatia since September 2020. Half of the games he played in, he featured as a substitute demonstrating his ability to impact games from the bench.

With Klopp’s ability to push his players to the next level, Brekalo has the potential to thrive at Liverpool.

They may look better on the right but when you break it down it definitely isn't as impressive as it could seem

 

His 3 assists as a right winger last season were in 2 games, 0 goal contributions in the other 5

 

1 was in the German 2nd division, 1 was in the Uefa Youth League, and 1 was against a German 3rd division side in the cup

I wouldn't sign him as a player to cover more than the left wing, barely played as a 10 and hasn't been that good in his limited appearances at right wing from what I have seen when watching Wolfsburg

 

He is best playing on the left coming inside on his right foot

 

He COULD cover those positions, but I wouldn't be confident in him being able to perform well consistently in them if needed to

Put it this way I'd rather Brekalo for £12m if we can't get our left footed RW target this summer than take someone else on loan and it be very easy not to play him like we did with Ünder and miss out on Brekalo who if Albrighton and Perez move on in the next year or 2 becomes a very good player at our disposal.

According to my sources in France he's a rf, plays like where salah plays. Not super wide but on the right side and has done a good job there. Better than buying someone used to the middle ( a la perez) or someone used to the left

....do not encourage Rudkin to put in a bit for the Right wing....it would be just like us to take the easy option for this position!!!

Brekalo is a right footed left winger - we've got a couple of those (notably Barnes - but Sowah can do that as well), we don't want one of those, we want a left footed (or failing that, a right footed player, used to playing on the right !) right winger !

Sowah is a left footed right winger

 

But yeah Brekalo doesn't make much sense if we are after a right winger
