Hi All,

Apologies for posting this in General Sport; but I'm not allowed to post in General Chat for some reason. Please don't delete this as a result and please don't move it to General Chat, since then I can't respond. Alternatively, do move it and remove my arbitrary General Chat ban.

I am trying to buy an Electric Vehicle. Just seems to be the way to go in terms of company taking the financial hit and then the BIK rate is good. Fuel is bonkers money (I do accept electric is poor also).

Some questions please:

(If the usual candidates could spare me the abuse, which will simply result in me being banned, that would be great).

- Anyone have one? What are your thoughts?
- Tesla seems to be the way to go due to the established network. This was my position; should I reconsider it? Are other models viable in terms of easy charging options round the UK?

- Are there actually any available or have the issues over in China shut down manufacture/onward shipping of vehicles/parts to such an extent that everything is a 12 month wait?

- Anything else I should be aware of?

Please feel free to direct message me, if preferred and mods, please try to be sensible. I know its good sport to move my threads to sub-forums where I can't access them; or just delete them altogether because you can, but in this case, please can you let this one live? I suspect it will die of its own accord in here anyway, but its worth a go.

In the spirit of Easter and heroes rising again, maybe it would be an idea to allow me to come back from the Foxestalk dead. I basically got banned for other people's sins, so its hugely poetic. Go on. Move that rock.

Cheers,

From the Heart of my Bottom,

T(he) P(eople's) H(ero).

@The Bear is the go to guy on Tesla.

The best I could get my hands on for you is the Hyundai Ionic 5, but you're looking at a delivery date of Jan/Feb 2023.

The Audi's and Merc's both look good.

Got loads of electric Fiat 500's I could do you a deal on. You'd look good in a Rose Gold one lol

Feel free to PM me if you've got any questions.

Worth checking the lead time on a lease? https://leasing.com/independent-brokers/leasing-options-limited/kia/soul/L0102610000009722319/ I have this, well actually a slightly different version with a couple more gadgets but pretty similar, love it. Much cheaper overall than the previous petrol car I was running, overall. I also looked at the VW ID.3 and Hyundai Kona and preferred the Soul overall.

Tesla are quite expensive, nice cars but I didn't think worth the extra cost. There is no problem charging a non-Tesla, there are rapid chargers everywhere and you need about 30 mins to get up to 80%, range is about 280 miles.

The Kia EV6 is built on the same platform as the Ioniq 5, but has better range.

The BMW i4 also looks to be a beast of a car.

I guess it depends what's available on your Car Scheme at work!

We are in the same boat around BIK.  But my wife covers the south west region from Leicestershire and getting to her weekly meeting in Exeter, on an EV, isn't possible on a single charge (or eat least not there and back...)  - so we are stuck in a scenario, where NOT going EV, will cost us an extra £300 a month in BIK, but going with the EV, would mean she has to add at least an hour onto her journey time to charge up for the return journey.

Bit of a nightmare to be fair!

- Anyone have one? What are your thoughts? - I have a Kia e-Niro and think it's fantastic. Was was under the limit for the £2k grant which knocks a few more quid off them.  I forget what it is exactly but it's about £35k?
- Tesla seems to be the way to go due to the established network. This was my position; should I reconsider it? Are other models viable in terms of easy charging options round the UK? This is where my experience and use will vary to most.  We've got two cars and I've never once used a non-domestic charger (that's a lie as I've topped up at free charging at High Cross (before they stopped it) and Fosse Park).  We use it as a get around for going to work, school run etc. and the ICU car for further trips as I can't be doing hanging around service station charge points.  We've got a place in the lakes that also has an EV charger and we made it there comfortably on a single charge so if you're destination has a charger that cuts out that faff as the "on the go" chargers are my only gripe with the setup.

- Are there actually any available or have the issues over in China shut down manufacture/onward shipping of vehicles/parts to such an extent that everything is a 12 month wait? This is where I'd get to know the dealer of the car you want.  Due to the cars being snapped up so quickly, I got a call from them saying the vehicle I'd ordered would be 9 months but they had a similar spec car coming in much sooner.  Depending on how fussy you are with spec, you can get one much sooner as they have the bespoke order but also general production vehicles coming in quite frequently.  It's a complete lottery mind you and some luck is required.

- Anything else I should be aware of? EV Installation grant is ending soonish so factor that price into the charger.  Also a ballache that due to the current energy situation I've not been able to switch to a tariff more suited to EV.  I could change, but then I'd be off the cap.

Thought I'd answer in a butchered quote above to your questions my experiences.

Surely that one hour a week that she's gaining isn't worth an extra £300 for? Stop at the services, have a coffee and a bite to eat, pay the £10 and save yourself £300 in the process?

I think I'll be going with an EV in the next 5 years if I stay at my current job, probably do around 300 miles every 2 weeks for work, so an EV would be no trouble at all, it's just the starting cost and the battery being ****ed after a few years that's currently putting me off. My Fiesta costs me £70 in fuel every 2 weeks, whereas the finance for an EV is probably £400 a month.

Tesla are by no means the only option. Plenty of different marques make decent EVs now. Maybe not with the range of a Tesla Model 3 Long Range, but that all depends on your mileage needs and charging situation.

If you can get a home charger then you're laughing, though the government grant of £350 towards installation costs has now ended. They usually cost around £700 to install and need a credited electrician to do it.

Public charging options will depend on what is available in your area. Check ZapMap app or online for all the possibilities and cost per kW - https://www.zap-map.com/live/#

I have the Tesla Model 3 and I love it. Other people don't like them but it's all down to personal choice ultimately. Tesla are still the king when it comes to balancing power and useable range.

As far as availability with Tesla's, well if you order a new car then its going to take up to 3 months. Tesla work on a quarterly basis and have a big push at the end of each quarter to fulfill orders. It's unusual it'll take longer than that. Right now you're looking at the end of June.

Alternatively they have a current inventory online to choose from. These are unsold cars that are sitting waiting at dealerships to be bought. If you can find a car on there that meets your spec then you can get it much quicker.

yes.... i'm with YOU on that.......but then, i'm not the one driving 400 miles or so in a day...(plus doing a full days work) trying to convince her of that is a little harder!

Batteries needing changing after a few years is an old myth nowadays. My Tesla has an 8 year warranty on the battery, and there are older Teslas out there that have done half a million miles with no more than 10% degradation on them.

No messing around then!

Indeed. What's the point? Did the research, asked people with experience, saw one available, done.

I can worry about other things now. I feel like I've partially de-cluttered my mind.

Which did you go for in the end?

Thanks guys - I've bought a Tesla.

Maybe the tesla can create a foxestalk account and gain access to the general forum.

The People's Tesla.

Congrats on the purchase.  Wish i could afford one of those. I mean, I could if I sold my house and lived in a tent in the ontario wilderness.

My neighbour 2 doors down has one can't hear that car at all. Stealth mode.

Ive got the Tesla Duel motor on order, my director locked it in before the price rise (gone up to £54/55k now) and it is 9 month wait. We have a fair few EV's in our car park and speaking to people who own a bmw/merc EV regret not getting Tesla because of the infrastructure of the charing points. Tesla superchargers are everywhere, I don't know much about the other charge points but heard horrendous stuff like queuing for ages for a slot.

Tesla is clearly number one in the EV game if it is in your price range go for one

Ive got the AWD performance 3.

I wasn't too fussed on which one; but this one became available and so I went for it.

The service is actually a bit crap though to be honest. They've changed delivery/pick up 4 times in 2 days including changing the place 3 times. They also can't confirm if I get driveaway insurance cover. Not a problem - I will just insure the car; but for a premium brand purchase, its all a bit rubbishy after initial order (which was very slick) in my opinion.

I'll let you all know what to think in a bit. Need to work out whether to garage, or just sell, the XJ8.

Nice.

3.2s 0-60. You just wait until you first slam your foot flat down from a standing start!! Like a rocket ship.

I picked mine up from the NEC so didn't have any delivery issues.

What colour you had?

Blue, with the black wheels. It was an inventory car; so I didn't get to spec it fully; but ultimately its probably what I'd have gone for.

They've just messed me around with pick up; meaning I now have to get to about 100 miles away to get it; but at least they are sending someone to pick me up; at least. Let's hope it has a decent charge on it, since I have places to be later on on Monday.

If I can get myself to a supercharge thing; ultimately how easy is that? How do you pay? Using app on your phone? I've not set up all that yet.

Sorry, didn't see this in time.

You sign up either on the app or their website and put your payment card in there.  But I assume you've sorted that by now.

It's worth using ZapMap to find out which public charger companies are most popular in your area and at least signing up for them in advance with a folder for their apps on your phone. Just in case you need a quick charge from one of them.
