Having looked again at that graph, the percentage increase is 4% for both utilities and alcohol and tobacco but the actual amount spent is very different for both areas. That said, percentages can be misleading when taken in isolation. 4% for both areas suggests that housing and utilities were already the biggest expense for the poorest 10% and again, I suggest that is down to prepaid metering and, now I think about it, the effect of Universal Credit and the percentage of which goes on essential utilities The poorer you are, the more you pay - always been a Tory motto. 1 1

Free Falling Foxes Posted 3 May 2022 Posted 3 May 2022 Caught a piece of 'Have I Got News For You' and one panelist said, 'This is the worst government in a generation and Labour cannot lay a glove on them. I fear that is so. The Tories may get a bloody nose at the local elections but I think they will be re elected at the next General Election - no matter who their leader is. Sir Keir Starmer does not come over well at all in interviews I think, even appearing passionless. He may be a good Labour politician and even someone the country needs, but it won't happen. Ed Davey does portray competence and desire but would we ever see a Liberal gov't again? Nah. I sometimes wonder too if the next Labour Prime Minister has even been born yet. If that proves to be the case; then it's unlikely I'll be around to see it happen. The Tories know all this and will continue to be contemptuous towards a huge percentage of the populous yet get back in. What a depressing thought for a democracy. I do hope I'm wrong. 1 1
NYC Fox Fan Posted 3 May 2022 Posted 3 May 2022 It could be worse! You could be like me and stuck with the US government. Man 4 years under Trump was like a hangover without aspirin.

I hate to say it, but he's not the worst person among the Repubs that could run and win, either. Some of the others actually appear competent.

weller54 Posted 4 May 2022 Posted 4 May 2022 Get out there tomorrow everyone and give the Tories a good kicking in the local elections!!... Perhaps then the party might just turn on that cretin Johnson!!! 1

Labour have been miles ahead in the polls now for about 6-9 months now though. Feel like “Labour can’t lay a glove on them. No one knows what they stand for” is just Tory rhetoric. Just like “Blue Tory” and “Tory lite” descriptions of New Labour were always Tory slogans parroted by the Left in Labour to divide the Labour voters. 5

It's an especially daft thing to say when Labour's Windfall Tax proposal seems to have been the main talking point in recent days when leading Tory politicians are questioned about the cost-of-living crisis. If you've no genuinely no idea what Labour stands for then you must never read or watch the news. 3 1

Fazzer 7 Posted 4 May 2022 Posted 4 May 2022 We will have a better feel of the mood in the Nation come Friday. I don't think Labour will make as many gains as they think. Maybe Lib Dems will steal the show.

I have been staggered by the apathy that runs through the British public. Many of the people who should vote for parties other than the Tories don't vote. As you mentioned the populist statements appeal to those with a short attention span. Johnson strikes some crazy chord with some as they see him as a character. We don't need a character but leaders of character. 1

Unfortunately that’s the entire political strategy of the DNC. Rather that coming up with a good strong candidate that can find a way to unite the country - they hope the opposition fails. Things will never get better, with strategies like this. Edited 4 May 2022 by marbles
WigstonWanderer Posted 4 May 2022 Posted 4 May 2022 (edited) It has been said that Americans always do the right thing - after exhausting every other option. I’m hoping there is some truth to this article which implies that having looked over the edge of the democratic cliff, they might be pulling back. Perhaps just wishful thinking. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/may/04/donald-trump-democrats-republicans-midterms-robert-reich Edited 4 May 2022 by WigstonWanderer
