The Running Thread (formerly How fast can you run a 5k?)

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Had a break from running but I’m back around 24:30 5k, however, last few weeks I’ve started getting an acid reflux like/throat burning sensation lower in my chest (sternum area) after 15 or so mins running.

Anyone had this before, any suggestions?

Im not eating much before I run, for park run for example, I typically have a slice of toast or two at least 1.5 hours before, or a banana half an hour before. A glass of water as soon as I wake up, that’s it.

Going to run with the big boys at Poole Parkrun this weekend. The weekend just gone, winning time was 15.37 and 77 people finished sub 20 mins lol

Frustratingly not quite in PB shape otherwise it would have been a full send on a dead flat course. Should be fun none the less.

Got within 10 seconds of my PB, clung onto the pacer for the first half but then faded. Pretty stacked field for a parkrun, two people finishing above 90% age graded score.

I need a proper long run, comfortable, soft, bouncy shoe. Struggling with foot/leg fatigue at the 17K mark where I used to be comfortably running 20+.

My Nobablast 5s died early

Saucony Azuras ive fallen out with - too firm for long runs, not quick enough for tempo

Still love my Addi Evo SLs and can go long in them but mainly use for daily and tempo

Nike Vaporfly 4 as my raceday shoe.

I dont fancy the new Novablast 6s after the 5s died.

Thinking maybe a Nike Vomero Plus or similar. Any suggestions?

I got the Vomero Plus last week. Only done 6 miles in them so far so a hit early to tell. Can update  bit later this week when I’ve hopefully broke them in a bit more.

Initially they seem like a comfortable cruiser not really getting the big bounce like I’ve seen in the reviews. As I say they may need 20-30 miles to get going.

Had been looking at the Rad UFO but not at the price they are atm.

What distance do people find they start needing to take water with them? Assuming it's not a mega hot day

I never took water with me even when I was training for half marathons (a long time ago), never found I needed it as long as I'd been drinking plenty of fluid for a couple of days beforehand.

More than that distance I might well need some but those days are gone

For me I generally only have a stop for a water break over 20km generally. Excluding the heat that is though, I've been stopping around 10k in recently and downing a lucozade in seconds 😂

I can't run with a water bottle in hand. If I'm doing a long run over a half I might take a running bag with a drink but never otherwise

Superblast 2 or 3. Haven’t run in the 3 but the reviews I’ve seen describe them as the most comfy shoe they have ran in.

Anything over a half marathon I'd say. In the heat, anything over about 8km for me.

I found the Vomero Plus’s heavy and not particularly responsive. Sold them on after less than 10 miles of running in them. Shame though as they looked good.

Saucony Endorphin? Not the speed or the pro, the Endorphin. Fairly decent reviews but I haven’t tried them.

I’m on the hunt for new shoes. Love my Saucony Speed 5’s but not sure what else to try.

Anything over 10k but I sweat stupidly. I've started adding electrolytes tablets to help with sodium loss because I can super bonk afterwards.

I've got the Saucony Endorphin Azuras which have been raved about all year, first they said it was an evo SL killer, loads of people listing it as their shoes of the year. I've done 200K in it and i think it's shit. It's definitely not a quick shoe for me, and it's too firm for long runs/zone 2. Don;t understand the hype. First few weeks I ran in them I thought yeh these seem alright, but was expecting them to break in etc. Just a really dull, slow, cumbersome run for me.

This is interesting, think all depends on running style etc, I have the Azura and my best shoe for most running, I do agree they don't have that bite for the interval runs, i use my saucony speed for these. My body is not good for anything unstable which the SL are a bit unstable for me, i didn't get on with the Asics nova 5 they are also incredibly unstable - I'm 92kg maybe the spongey trainers aren't that good for the heavier runner

I fell out of love quickly with the Azura. Had a few cracking runs in them and now just don’t reach for them.

I’ve been eyeing up the new Mizuno Wave Rider 30’s. The Wave Rider has always been a decent workhorse of a trainer that I’ve got on with but never on over 10K in them. I’ve got GNR in 6 weeks so need to find a new pair soon!

Did 10k on the treadmill earlier at a chilled pace, ended up with what looked like a serious runner one side and a guy going pretty quickly on the other so I floored it for the last KM. Thought I was going to have to tear my t shirt in 2 to take it off.

I use the exact same two for sessions/raceday as you do.

For easy/long runs I use the New Balance Rebel v5's. They just feel much softer than the Evo's, but still light/responsive enough if you want to pick up the pace ocassionally.

Have been able to pick them up very cheap recently...my current pair cost £50!

Interesting to hear re: the Novablast 5s man. I was a huge fan of my first pair last year, everything I thought they would be and made running an absolute dream, couldn't recommend them enough – got another pair Nov/Dec last year and got such little joy from them, it was like wearing a completely different shoe. Made me feel leggy early doors

I just wear my Evos for long runs now and they've done an absolute number this year and still feel like they've got more in them

Keen to get a raceday/carbon-plated shoe (no events lined up mind) for the odd run just to see what, if any - difference they'd make for me

Yeh the Nova 5s are such an oddity. Only had one pair, first 200K I loved them, got to 300K and they were full on done, dead, awful. I've read a lot of similar and polarised views, reckon it has to be a quality control issue.

RE. Carbon Plates - I've done my fastest runs by far in Vaporfly 4s but there must be some placebo effect thrown in there too I reckon.

Been looking at the New Balance 1080 v15s, they sound like what I need but I've zero experience with NB and the colourways stink (I know that's only minor).

Will throw Mizuno Neo Vistas into the conversation, I've loved mine. Nice and springy, only issue is the upper doesn't have all that much support which I need to be careful of considering my penchant for spraining my ankles.

I want you in Leicester Half, time to protect what's yours - Watermead.

Superblast 2s are ridiculous for big mileage. My EVO SL still feel like they pop more when you want to rip it over shorter distances or perhaps race day half/marathons but I suspect they aren't any quicker and nowhere near as comfortable and less impact full on the feet's and legs as the Superblasts.

On a hot day, pretty much from the off. Normal conditions if running for more than an hour you'd be wanting to have consumed 500ml of water per hour, plus electrolytes / gels.

I'm like Zidane and learnt the hard way so I now drink and fuel like a hawk.
