Another vote for Fryatt and Howard. Even the big man looked like prime Shearer in League One.

I think we will talk about Maddison, Ndidi and Tielemans as a great midfield 3 in the future.

Even if they rarely seemed to be all great at the same time.

Collymore and Heskey could have been the greatest

Yeah those two for maybe half a dozen  games were unplayable. Remembering Collymores hattrick and that bouncing volley off a heskey flick on, pure sauce.

Half a dozen? They only played 2 together didn't they. Collymore made his debut at Watford away. Then the Sunderland game happened didn't Heskey leave straight after?

I remember that game at Watford. I was a corporate guest in a box. Nice people. I discreetly wore my Leicester tie. Diplomatic 1-1 draw. Matt Elliott for us.

That bouncing volley from the Heskey flick was Claridge’s goal 3 or 4 years previously.

I think that Sunderland game gets over romanticised a lot. Collymore was brilliant that game, as good an individual performance we saw in that era. But pretty much all of Collymore’s other performances under both MON and Taylor were of a languid Beckford-esque proportion of a player wanting a last payday.

I don’t think Heskey and Collymore would’ve become our best ever partnership at all. I think Collymore would’ve dropped out the first team by the start of next season anyway even without that bad injury.

My memory is also, like we often did under MON when we’d start and end the season really well but turn to crap over the winter months, that we actually went into that game in pretty poor form and were defensively a bit of a shambles that season with Walsh well past his best and Elliott already on the decline.

That partnership is best remembered because it only had one or two games together not in spite of it imo.

Seemed like times would never get as good as then. 8th in the prem, Collymore in the ranks and a League cup win. Unfortunately it all went pear shaped, O Neill left, Lennon went with him, Collymore broke his leg and went mental with an extinguisher, and years of despair set in. Who would know though in those O Neill days that there would be even bigger success to come.

Bit of a negative spin on things. Collymore started off really well, and Heskey and him played well together straight the way, which is why so many would have loved to see more of it, but Heskey left and then Collymore got a bad injury. We finished 8th( our highest ever finish) and won the League cup. It was amazing times that we never thought would get better. O Neill would have got us in the top 6 I'm convinced of that but can't blame him for leaving, we would always be selling our best players. Fond fond memories though, some great times upsetting the big boys.

Great Post. Collymore first against Sunderland was superb  broke his leg at Derby. Of course Peter Taylor was the real fly in the ointment.  I too thought the best days were behind us.
