@Sampson  To borrow your phrase, I agree and disagree with you about our defence in Martin's last season.

You're right about Walshy - his best days were behind him, but I reckon the three we had at the back - Elliott, Taggart and Sinclair - were one of the best defensive units we've ever had. Walshy just couldn't get in the team anymore.

You remember 'boring, boring Leicester' - that old chant of that year. Opposition fans sang it because we had a series of live games on TV which all seemed to finish 0-0, or 1-0 to us:

0-0 v Leeds (League Cup)

0-0 v Arsenal (FA Cup)

0-0 v Arsenal (FA Cup replay)

0-0 v Villa (LC SF a)

1-0 v Villa (LC SF h)

They were all in the space of about 6 weeks, and at a time when we had a huge injury crisis. It used to piss off Martin so much that people called us boring.

Then even the following season, 2000/01, we were really solid defensively right up to the Wycombe game - at the start of March we'd let in only 29 goals in the League - better even than 2015/16. Of course it all fell to pieces after the Wycombe game. I still don't think the truth has really come out about why it all imploded so spectacularly.

As a fairly young fan of 14/15 that season, those few weeks/months were some of the most exciting times to be a fan. Penalty shoot outs, Cup Semi Finals etc.

Could never understand the boring tag, not many fans of other clubs would go through the amount of emotions in those few weeks in a decade.

Yeah - just speaking personally, that Villa SF was the most emotional night ever at Filbert Street. Loved that team so much. The spirit in that squad was unbelievable.

Not partnerships but in the days where the best players were picked and formation moulded to suit the following picked themselves and were undropable

Taggart, Elliot and Walsh (Guppy and A N other as wingbacks)

Lennon, Muzzy and Savage

Posted

For me, it'd have to be Peter Bungalow and Arnie Gobble.

Wouldn't be where we are today without them.

Two absolute giants. A lot of the younger fans probably won't have heard of them as I've made them up.

LEGENDS.

Peter Taylor & Junior Lewis

They have been a great partnership ever since the days when a great O'Neill team was dismantled to provide over a decade of underachievement.

They are still  together after being sacked from their last 97 positions in charge of grass roots football clubs.

Excellent post. We had a terrible injury crisis and yet went up against the best around like Leeds and Arsenal and scrapped for everything. Remember Arsenal home Fa Cup, Flowers had a blinder. Elliott was only playing upfront so much that year because we had so many injuries. I think Izzet and Savage getting injured in the Wycombe game didn't help.

Probably boring to a neutral, there wasn't as many live games on as there are now, so the neutral probably got used to seeing us scrap out nil Nils. I loved it though, we were usually big underdogs and gave our all every week.

I have a different recollection of the 'boring boring' thing.  Rather than being a taunt from opposition fans, it came from Villa manager John Gregory.

After the first leg of the semi-final which finished 0-0, Gregory criticised Leicester's lack of ambition saying that we never crossed the halfway line and calling us boring.  I remember that riled the fans and probably the team.  When Villa arrived for the return leg, we beat them 1-0 but the scoreline belied the story of the game.  This time we certainly did cross the halfway line, in fact we battered them.and every time we hit the post or had an attempt on goal it was the Leicester fans ironically shouting 'boring boring Leicester' as a dig back at Gregory.

Great game!

Same. That QPR goal stands out to me.

Deane and Dickov was a good partnership too

Great game!

It was everyone! First Wenger, then Gregory then Ken Bates criticized us. Opposition fans were chanting it, and journalists piled in - especially Ian Ridley in the Observer, which prompted Neil Lennon to respond. He mentions the moment in the Villa game that you remember:

Strange.  I don't remember any of that, I just remember Gregory's baiting and that match, but OK,  I'll take your work for the rest of it.

Didn’t the players celebrate against Arsenal by pretending to fall asleep on the halfway line?

I remember the Ridley article, what a smug, bitter and clueless piece. I don't even think that it would get published today, even the snarkey articles still regularly written by journos on teams they obviously dislike aren't quite as charmless or poorly written. Hope he's enjoyed seeing us winning every major honour since then while his beloved Spurs have won sweet fa.

Mahrez and Simpson.    A genius in midfield and attack who couldn't defend, and an excellent defender who couldn't attack.  Each stuck to what they did best, and complemented each other perfectly.
