“There will also be two trialists involved in the second XI, we're told. Those will be development squad trialists, so not for the first team. While no names have been confirmed, there has been a young full-back called Deniche Hill in training recently.“

Flynn looked good going forward, some good passes in behind - got caught out a bit with players in behind him

Wilson-Brown did alright, especially when he has only ever played under 18 level football

Can tell Flynn and Wilson-Brown have never played together in matches though, bit of miscommunication / mistiming with tracking players in behind etc.

apparently we tried to sign Thompson Ishaka after a trial. He’s now going to rangers (not sure how that works if we couldn’t get a WP)

How does he get a work permit for rangers, but not us?!? :dunno:

To get even more.

that will go well. I just find it ironic that they are using brexit as a reason when the principle of leaving is more or less the same “we’ll be stronger on our own” but as with the eu you suddenly realize you won’t be subsidized for certain things and have to be self sufficient.

The grass is certainly not greener going alone, in a dangerous world climate

I know much of the points based system was designed by the FA, so it seems fair the Scottish FA should be given exemptions. I do wonder how the work permits work with leave to remain, et. al. (I am on the spouse visa and don't know how it works for others). Would it be easier for a foreign player already playing in the UK later move to an English club? It would certainly increase the player's value, as well as the attractiveness of playing in Scotland for players not on enough points.

Leicester City handed run-outs to two trialists on Saturday as they lost to Notts County in their first pre-season friendly of the summer.

Paul Appiah and Deniche Hill both enjoyed run-outs as part of the youthful second-half side fielded by Brendan Rodgers, a period during which Aden Baldwin scored the winner for the National League visitors. Both Appiah and Hill have been training with the club over the first couple of weeks of pre-season, but this was their first opportunity to show the club how they performed in matches.

The duo are being looked at as potential recruits for City's development squad as they look to bolster their ranks ahead of the new Premier League 2 season. This term, the age limit of the competition is coming down from under-23 to under-21.

Centre-back Appiah is the more established of the two. The 19-year-old has been in the academy system for some time, spending a few years with Chelsea before joining Aston Villa in 2019.

There, he helped them win the FA Youth Cup in 2021, captaining one of their games during their run to the trophy, and scoring in the quarter-final. Last season, he played seven times for their Under-23s, missing a chunk of the season through injury. Despite that, he was not offered a new deal with Villa and was released this summer.

If Appiah was to get a deal at City, he would not be the first released Villa player to do so in the current regime. Lewis Brunt made the same journey last summer, and went on to make his Premier League debut with the club away at Spurs.

City are well connected with the youth set-up at Villa. Ben Petty, the head coach of the club’s development squad, used to work there before moving across to the East Midlands.

Hill, meanwhile, has emerged from a slightly more unusual route. Already a full international for the Caribbean island of Bermuda, the left-back has emerged from the academy at Brooke House College in Market Harborough.

An international boarding school, Brooke House College has had a football academy since 2008 and it is currently overseen by their technical director Micky Adams, the former City manager. Hill is one of a number of young players who have moved from Bermuda to attend the college.

They have had a few players go on to make it professionally. Jesse Sekidika is a Nigerian winger who played for Galatasaray in Champions League qualifying last season, while Tanzania international Kelvin John is on the books of Belgian side Genk.

Hill hopes to be the next and has already made good progress internationally. After representing Bermuda in the Concacaf Under-20 Championship qualifying last autumn, he got his senior debut for his country in June, playing in a goalless draw with Haiti.

Slow Leicester City transfer business opens door for promising midfielder
The attacking midfielder showed glimpses of quality on the right-hand side on Saturday and may see James Justin's rise as evidence he can make the step up to the Premier League

If any Leicester City player furthered their cause in Saturday’s pre-season opener, it was Callum Wright.

Forty-five minutes in a somewhat disjointed side, and out of position in a right-wing role, was hardly the ideal scenario for the 22-year-old in his bid to impress this summer, but he produced a handful of moments that caught the eye. Both Brendan Rodgers and City fans will want to see more of the attacking midfielder.

What impressed most with Wright was his willingness to be daring in the final third and his endeavour to get into the box. One of the big issues for City last season was breaking down deep-set defences. They often lacked the speed and intricacy needed to exploit the chinks in the armour of the opposition. That’s where Wright did well.

When he had support, whether from Ricardo Pereira at right-back, Boubakary Soumare inside, or Patson Daka ahead, he used it. Every pass was a give-and-go, meaning Wright’s City team-mates could try the audacious flicks knowing that he would be running onto them.

With good footwork inside the box, and a fearlessness in getting shots off, one bouncing off the inside of the post, there was plenty to like about how Wright performed. A delay to one cut-back from the byline meant he missed out on an assist he would have had with better decision-making, but getting into such a position is a very good start.

Crucially for his hopes of winning Rodgers over, he physically looks the part too. He’s no longer the slightly scrawny lad loaned to Cheltenham 18 months ago.

If there are any doubts over Wright it is the level he has played at. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall won player of the season with a Championship club, so it was evident he was going to be at least close to the level needed for the Premier League. A year in League One will not have Wright ready for the same rigours.

But there is evidence that that big leap is surmountable. When City signed James Justin, the highest level he had played was in the third tier. Eighteen months later and he was being touted for an England call-up.

The lack of transfer activity so far may help Wright’s cause too. The closer City go to the wire to do their outgoing business, the less time they have to bring players in. Wright represents a cheap, versatile option to fill any gaps left in the squad, and he will be a player that Rodgers will fancy himself to improve.

Towards the end of last season, Cheltenham's then manager Michael Duff said he hoped Wright would be able to break into City's first-team squad, and he did not phrase it in such a way that suggested it was a long shot. How he fares in the upcoming pre-season games, and what happens in the transfer window, is pivotal.
