Football League struggles and 'tenacious' displays - Leicester City's loan players in focus
Latest Leicester City news from LeicestershireLive brings an update on how the Foxes' loan stars are getting on at their respective loan clubs

Leicester City's lack of summer spending did not stop a number of Brendan Rodgers' squad to leave the club on short-team deals.

Wout Faes and Alex Smithies were the only additions made to the Foxes squad, but there were 17 departures throughout the summer transfer window, with seven players leaving on loan.

With the football season well underway, players are beginning to stamp their mark at their temporary clubs with the likes of Hamza Choudhury and Ben Nelson enjoying regular football at Watford and Rochdale respectively.

However, for many, regular game time has been hard to come by. We take a look at how those Foxes players currently plying their trade elsewhere are getting on.

Hamza Choudhury - Watford
If Choudhury's aim was to leave the Foxes for regular first team minutes, he's certainly achieved that under Rob Edwards. The 24-year-old has started all eight league games since his arrival, playing a more defensive role in midfield or in a midfield three.

Completing 85% of his passes, the midfield has made an average of 2.5 interceptions per game, 2.6 tackles per game and won 71% of his duels. The Hornets have managed only two wins since his arrival, with last weekend's 2-2 draw with Sunderland extending their winless run to three games.

Following his impressive debut against Vincent Kompany's Burnley in August, Choudhury was praised by Watford manager Edwards for his performance.

"I thought he was excellent," said Edwards. "Tenacious, his running, his desire, he's infectious the way he gets about. He covers the ground so quickly. It was a terrific debut and I was really pleased with him.

Next game: Sunday 2 October (12pm) - Stoke City (A)

George Hirst - Blackburn Rovers
Highly-rated at the King Power Stadium, 23-year-old Hirst signed a new three-year deal at City before signing for Championship side Blackburn Rovers on a season-long loan.

After starting in the 3-2 home defeat to Nigel Pearson's Bristol City, the striker has featured for only 32 minutes in the following two fixtures against Watford and Luton Town. He squandered a big chance at the weekend in the defeat at Luton, with LancasterLive's Elliot Jackson telling us that Hirst's impact has been hard to judge after only 93 minutes of action.

Ryan Hedges and Ben Brereton Diaz are Hirst's competitors at Ewood Park, with five goals split between the trio so far this season. However, poor results could see Hirst handed more minutes if the goals continue to dry up.

Next game: Saturday 1 October (3pm) - Millwall (H)

Ben Nelson - Rochdale
The England Under-18s centre-back joined Rochdale in the summer after playing a part of City's pre-season. He was named on the bench by Brendan Rodgers on eight separate occasions last season and has gone on to make his first senior start in the opening month of the season.

Rochdale has endured a horrid start to the campaign, losing seven of their opening nine games of the campaign. Nelson missed the opening day defeat to Leshabela's Crewe but has since made himself undroppable with a string of decent performances.

He's played on the right of a back three, completed 73% of his passes and has recorded 1.9 tackles per game. Jim Bentley's team will be hoping for a turnaround in results to avoid back-to-back relegations and their first out of the Football League.

Next game: Tuesday 20 September (7pm) - Liverpool Academy (H)

Josh Eppiah - Northampton Town
Belgian forward Eppiah failed to make an impact in his homeland at OH Leuven in 2020, but became a favourite at Sixfields last term as Northampton reached the League Two play-offs. He rejoined towards the end of the transfer window and finally made his second debut at the weekend.

Eppiah replaced Jack Sowerby in the 84th minute of the Cobblers' 3-0 win over Nelson's Rochdale. Manager Jon Brady provided an insight on Eppiah's fitness as the 23-year-old looks to play a part in their return to League One.
"We need to see that Josh has that physical endurance to not just get through a training session but be on top in the session and be above the level of the session," Brady said.

"We are just starting to find that with him at the moment which shows that his body and his aerobic capacities and his endurance are all starting to get better."

Next game: Tuesday 20 September (7pm) - Cambridge (H)

Khanya Leshabela - Crewe Alexandra
After struggling for minutes at Shrewsbury Town in League One last season, the South African joined League Two outfit Crewe Alexandra in July on a short-term loan. Despite featuring in seven of the opening nine games of the season, the winger is yet to start a league game for Alex Morris' side.

Daniel Agyei has started on the left for Crewe following the emergence of summer signing Courtney Baker-Richardson, meaning Leshabela has been forced to come off the bench. He has started in the EFL Trophy and EFL Cup, but will be aiming to add starts to his 129 minutes clocked up in the league.

Leshabela has made 69 appearances for the Foxes development team, scoring twice and assisting five. His loan at Gresty Road comes to an end in January, where he'll either return to Ben Petty's under-21 squad or seek another loan move.

Next game: Saturday 24 September (3pm) - Mansfield Town (H)

Jakub Stolarczyk - Fleetwood Town
Highly-rated goalkeeper Stolarczyk joined Scott Brown's Fleetwood Town after being tipped to reach the very top by Foxes boss Rodgers. He signed a new deal to 2026 at the King Power Stadium before sealing his second loan spell away from LE2 - after impressing at Dunfermline last term.

Fleetwood had already signed former Bolton Wanderers goalkeeper Joel Lynch before the arriving of the Polish shot-stopper, meaning Stolarczyk's two appearances have come in the EFL trophy and EFL Cup. He did manage to restrict Premier League side Everton to only one goal in August, but has the task of competing with Lynch for the number one shirt.

Next game: Tuesday 20 September (7pm) - Carlisle United (A)

Brad Young - Notts County
Young goalkeeper Young joined National League side Notts County in the summer to provide back-up to Sam Slocombe after being first choice as City's development team's goalkeeper.

Young is yet to feature for Luke Williams' side, but NottinghamshireLive's Ollie King has revealed the goalkeeper could be handed an opportunity to impress in upcoming cup competitions. He said: "Manager Luke Williams has ensured the 20-year-old remains part of the squad on match days to give him that experience when he is called upon.

"With Sam Slocombe asserting himself as the current number one, it is unclear when Young will get his chance to impress, but with the FA Trophy fixtures getting underway next weekend, there could be an opportunity to make an appearance when Notts enter the competition in the later rounds.

Next game: Saturday 24 September (3pm) - York City (A)

Ah right, even so it’s been a waste of time so far.

Bit of an over reaction his played in 7 out of 10 league games and played in the league cup.

He's managed 90 minutes 4 times.

Hardly a waste of time, not many sides are queueing up to play a 18 year old at CB.

Why?

Bringing him back means we will then have

Odunze and Doherty and Young meaning their game time will be reduced .

If Young plays it stops the development of the other 2 or they could play some games each but between all 3 they will hardy be getting regular football.

With Fleetwood he's getting a great amount of personal coaching from Owain Williams (Former Welsh International)who will be spending much more time with him than he would be getting at leicester with so many Keepers on their books.

Plus he's with his mate Will Russ and will be getting reserve games and be ready to jump in the first team if the chance arrises.

I don't really see the problem to be honest.

Brad Young isn't at Fleetwood, he is at Notts County

Well they won’t get injured unless it’s splinters in the arse.

Stolarczyk needs to be recalled, just wasting his time being sat on the bench

Obviously it would be more beneficial if these loanees were playing but they are still benefitting from being in a professional adult environment where players are playing for their livelihoods especially if the alternative is the odd game in the U21s.
