He is only 31 now. 

 

I always remember him as a good defender. Better than a few others we've had playing there since. 

I had to google this as I cant remember him playing for us at all, not one single memory. Mental.

Puel + Macia was the dream team

 

 

Yes and no. Puel/Macia's net spend was, I think, around the 20m mark, with (give or take) 100m spent in total over a period of about 16-18 months.

 

Pearson/Walsh's net spend, although largely at a lower level, was around the 35m mark, with about 40m spent in total over a period of 5.5 years.

 

Puel's spell brought some great acquisitions - Maddison, Evans, Pereira, Soyuncu. He initially brought Youri to the club, though if we count him as a Puel signing we'd have to add 40m to the Puel-era spend, for benefit of comparison. 

 

Pearson's spell, on the other hand, gave us Simpson, Fuchs, Drinkwater, Vardy, Albrighton, Dyer, Morgan, Huth, Mahrez, Okazaki, Ulloa, Cambiasso. I think that's pretty hard to beat. I mean, the sell-ons for his signings come to in excess of 100m, compared to (so far) very little for Puel's acquisitions, and the success that his players brought to the club easily eclipses anything post-Puel.

 

And of course both eras were responsible for some dodgy signings. For Pearson, some of those bargain basement signings who never took off (Whitbread, Hamer, Futacs, as you say). For Puel, some of his flops were a tad more expensive (Ghezzal, Diabate, and - possibly - Ward).

 

But the Pearson/Walsh era may be the most successful recruitment period, if cost-effectiveness is taken into account, for any club in living memory. Otherwise a side with our budget could never have won anything, nor even get into the position to acquire some of the players that Puel did.

 

But yes, there's no doubt that Puel's recruitment was crucial, and the foundation stone for Rodgers' success. It also underlines that Rodgers' investment hasn't been universally bad at all. It's just not been as frequently outstanding as two of his predecessors.

Can we not appreciate both Pearson and Puel’s signings?

 

Puel as a manager never clicked with a large % of us fans though and served up some hideous football.

 

The fact once you’ve lost Fofana…NONE of Rodgers signings have helped our model of buy low and sell high.

 

Yet, he shouts his mouth off about quality/money - I know that no manager comes out and admits their flaws often but his deflection style of communication is infuriating.

IF Rodgers signings were actually Rodgers signings, it’s clear he’s terrible at picking a player.

And I’d  suggest they’ve all regressed under him.

It’s fair to say, no coach / recruitment combination has ever nailed it. You never will, as every transfer is a risk. 
 

We are just going through a spell currently that is a bit painful.
