Gaps Between Championship Goals

Vardy's goal last night was his first in the Championship since March 2014 - a gap of nearly a decade. I can only think of Dion Dublin who has had a similar gap. His last goal for Cambridge was in the Championship in May 1992 after which he went on to a Premier League career not scoring a second tier goal again until March 2002 on loan for Millwall. There's probably quite a few more examples. Do any others spring to mind?

And unlike Dion, JV's was for the same club.

Probably. I did think maybe Trevor Brooking, but he was 11 years at West Ham in the top division from the start of his career and then dropped into the second for three years with the Hammers.

I just searched championships oldest goal scorers and then went and found when they’d last scored in the Championship / Div 2.

Have we missed an obvious one - Emile Heskey! April 1996 to December 2014 - Leicester and Bolton.

Ok, not championship: Richard Keogh scored for Wycombe on 2 September. It was his second goal for the club; 18 years after his first.

Peter Crouch and Darren Bent have got to be on that list.

Crouch played for Portsmouth around 2001(ish) then for Stoke after they got relegated in 2018??

Will check the dates later but that would be longer or at least close to Speed.

Darren Bent would have been at Ipswich early 00s in the Championship and then played most of his career in the top flight before going to Derby around the time we won the league - again I’ll check the dates later but must be a solid gap for both.

Not Crouch: he left Stoke when they were relegated in 2019. I remember it happening because a Stokie mate of mine was convinced he’d stay and bring them straight back up. 
 

I just had a look at Bent’s record and he had nine years between Ipswich in 2005 and Brighton in 2014.

Crouch played 23 games for Stoke in the Championship in the 18/19 season scoring once away at Preston.

This goal was scored 17 years after his last goal for Portsmouth in the 01/02 season.

Stanley Matthews - 1932-33 season to 1961-62 season. 29 years 

 

With the same club Stoke City too. Though in 2 different spells at the club

Another interesting stat from weekend. Billy Bodin scored for Swindon - 13 years since his last Swindon goal

The gap between Championship goals is pretty much the same as in the EPL, about 100 yards.
