I find Drury/ Weaver/ Matterface worse because of the scripted nonsense but "Fletch" and his need to fill every second with talking also grates. Too much narrative in commentary now instead of seeing what is happening.

Agreed on scripted stuff but I think they're equally as bad! The bloke started banging on about his mother in law yesterday and basically telling Guardiola what he should do.

Doesn't need repeating as it seems a common opinion, but I will anyway - commentators desperate need to trot out scripted lines.

Its like every commentator is desperate for their kenneth wolstenholme line that will be replayed over & over, but the thing about that was it was quick witted & off the cuff.

Anyone can read a line thats been written for them by a researcher to cover a probable situation.

Only exception being the 'Leicester hit back like champions' Tyler line that even if prepped ready to troy out still gets me.

 

Would do away with it and just have crowd noise, or maybe thats the next AI application - a generic commentary voice that can just describe what is happening without giving opinion I don't want to hear. 

Pundits are 90% shite as well - I love the streams that just play the first half highlights on loop, much rather have that than Michael Owen or whoever talking shite.

 

And whoever mentioned Jonathan Pearce bravo, should have been left to do Robot Wars - to be a standout irritant as a commentator is an achievement

The endless Americanisms that we're sleep-walking into. The upsetting thing is that the public laps it up giddily because they want to pretend they're Americans.

 

"The quarterback role"

"On the roster..."

"The coach" - this has even permeated the game. We don't have managers anymore.

"Overtime"

"Match-up"

"Rookie"

 

It's all contributing to the great whole and the ghastly Americanisation of British sport. Every time it's raised people seem to object and suggest that it isn't going on but 15+ American owners of Premier League teams, NFL fixtures, American 'tours', t-shirt cannons, matchday experiences. These are all new things.

 

Commentators desperately want to embed the nomenclature of American sports as they think it makes them sound cool. Fans want to be American sports fans as it's what they see on TV. The players want to be Americans because they're thick.

 

I wouldn't mind but we do sports and sports culture better. We're trading down because the media we consume is making us.

The most depressing americanisation for me.. is the now almost unlimited Substitutes... i mean FFS... you can literally change half of your outfield team...effectively able to bring on the DEE FENCE team

Every time one of these things is challenged you get a response of 'oh come on, don't be silly' but it just keeps happening. The NFL coming over here was a significant win for Americanised minds. Loads of folks wearing backward caps pretending to 'tailgate' in deepest London to watch the 'football'. 

 

It obviously appeals to a sector of people but I cannot understand why you'd trade a tradition with heritage and culture for soulless yee-hawery.

Just now Swansea v Southampton, after the Swansea goal which should've been offside - "he doesn't like giving away goals!", as the camera pans too a broody Russell Martin patrolling his technical area.

Basically, any commentator that is clearly not really watching carefully - they describe something that you just saw with your own eyes, and what he says doesn't remotely resemble the actuality.

One of my favourite comments though I can't recall who it was was when Tielemans scored the Cup winner and the comment was something like what a goal and the Leicester fans go potty!
